Ohio Portal

What would we need to do to create our own portal and start our own Wiki project?

My aim is to be the subject matter expert on Amish social settlements in Ohio.

I have a Amish friend does not want to use the internet but needs to have his companies listed to compete so I am in a catch-22 and am looking for Wikipedia subject matter experts unsocial settlements in Ohio.

Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated and I will make sure to provide you proper attribution. Please leave any suggestions on your talk page or on mine thank you in advance.

@COACH ZARLINO:
If you are at Wikipedia to promote your friend's companies, this is unlikely to turn out well. I suggest you read through the relevant FAQ page, Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations, particularly the first two sections, which explain it all more clearly than I can. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a business directory, and it does not aim to have a page on every company.
You can read about portals at Wikipedia:Portal and Wikipedia:Portal guidelines. A portal should introduce a broad topic area covered by dozens or even hundreds of Wikipedia articles. There's an "Ohio" portal and an "Anabaptism" portal. There's no "Amish" portal, and looking at Category:Amish I doubt if there is enough material. An "Amish in Ohio" topic area would definitely be too narrow. You can read about WikiProjects at Wikipedia:WikiProject. Starting a new WikiProject is a major undertaking, and I don't think you should try this.
I recommend that you post a request for help at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ohio, as a message there will be seen by the editors most interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of Ohio topics. For transparency, you should mention your interest in promoting your friend's companies. If your friend is paying you in any way to edit Wikipedia, then you must disclose this under Wikipedia's terms of use. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:24, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Yes I understand that starting a new project is a major undertaking and I do not have the experience to do it myself.

I am looking for people such as yourself that actually take the time to help newbies like myself instead of just slamming me and kicking me off the website in a microsecond.

I am 55 years old and have nothing to do but contribute to this disenfranchised population in the United States of America.

Specifically speaking concerning adding companies and promoting I am confused on why I look at other companies and they are all over Wikipedia with the founders when it was founded all the history and so on and so forth so every incubator starts somewhere every Think Tank start somewhere and every company starts somewhere so I don't understand how promoting a history of the American Amish Association as well as all of the companies that are a part of that process is any different than Ford Motor Company or my or Wikipedia or Google or any other company that you can think of.

I understand that I don't have the technical knowledge to produce the wonderful pages and projects that are out there but I do understand how important it is that the American Amish Association opportunity to compete in the marketplace without breaking any rules on any of the web pages that Jimmy Wales started in his vision was to produce quality information and relative related research.

In the the meantime I personally need to earn a small amount of income so I can continue to pay my very modest bills as well as provide food and shelter for my family so the American Amish Association was born because of that need.

We are a 501-c3 and we will be doing everything by the book our tax ID number for the Enterprise is 81 - 266-3933 and the Articles of Incorporation will be listed on John used heads website in the great state of Ohio.

Once again I want to thank you John for helping me and setting me on the straight and narrow I will not and do not intend to break any of the Wikipedia laws or Internet laws I only want to follow the I can laws and register every URL that will be referenced on this project. If you never started a company before John it takes 1 liter and a ton of great Wikipedia editors.

I am the one leader because I am the resident agent fiduciary agent statutory agent for the Miller Enterprise Corporation which owns every one of the American Amish Association members.

This is truly a rickety Wikipedia project unlike any other because the Amish do not believe in using the internet so why not develop this project on the 10th largest website in the world.

This gives every Wikipedia editor an opportunity to reach out into the community in which they serve and learn about the Amish Culture and documented properly in the five months that I have been involved with my due diligence I trulli understand that the media has no clue on what they have published I have found one decent documented there that was done a couple of years ago but other than that it's mostly Hollywood stuff and none of it is accurate. @COACH ZARLINO: Wikipedia only aims to have pages for companies that other people, completely independent of the company, have already written about. So Wikipedia has articles about Ford/Google/Wikipedia because authors have published whole books about these companies, respected newspapers have written substantial articles about them, respected news websites have reported on what they are doing, and so on. You can see all these independent sources listed as references in these articles. The Wikipedia jargon for this is "notability", and there's lots more about it at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies).
Most companies, in contrast, don't attract this level of outside interest and do not qualify for an article at Wikipedia. The company website might have a "History" section, the company's press releases might get published online somewhere, and the company's managers might be able to write an article from what they know personally, but there is not the kind of independent reliable sourcing that is required.

I greatly appreciate the checking of my work. Moving forward on this I'm not using the script anymore. Going to do them manually and make sure that the captions line up with the images. Chinese Remainder Theorem

Hello John, You helped me get started editing WP and have helped me in the past-- I seek your advice again, as I sense an edit war brewing. Perhaps you could read the first 3 or 4 sections of the WP article "Chinese remainder theorem" as far you can. (The lead has been vastly improved from a month ago.) Then please read the talk page section 4 "More practical approach". In response to the frustration expressd there by JSoules and the remark that followed, I added there a "Not too technical example", which was moved to the bottom of the page as a new section by D.Lazard, together with a note to me on my talk page. And some warnings to me on his talk page.

As you can see from our exchange below my example on the CRT talk page, he thinks my example is not sufficiently encyclopedic, although I find this in MOS:MATH "an encyclopedic tone can make advanced mathematical topics more difficult to learn" and "The articles should be accessible, as much as possible, readers not already familiar with the subject matter." I also note that the use of "we" is discouraged, although my NTT example makes use of it freely. I can probably re-write most of those "we"s, although I think in an example as opposed to the more formal sections, they encourage understanding.

In the interest of jointy composing some compromise I asked D.Lazard for an example of his table but it's been a week now. I am tempted to fix up the NTT example a little and then put it directly into the main CRT page, but D.Lazard on his talk page has warned me it will be reverted. See his last paragraphs to me there.

Or I could ask him please to leave the example on the main page for a month to see how other editors respond.

@RobLandau: I'm hesitant to give any advice on this, as I try to stick to cleanup edits that no one will notice! I don't think I've ever tried to add a large section to an established article; nor have I tried to add content to mathematics articles, despite having a degree in the subject. @RobLandau: Three cases here:
  • Just linking to an external page doesn't violate any copyright or usage terms on that page. The licensing conditions at mathoverflow.net wouldn't get in the way of adding it as an external link. Wikipedia's rules on External Links might prevent adding the link, though, so it would be worth suggesting it on the talk page first.
  • Citing any page as a source is fine provided you reword everything sufficiently. For example, all pages at the BBC website are marked "Copyright © 2016 BBC", but the BBC is regarded as a very reliable source for information in Wikipedia articles.
  • The CC BY-SA license at mathoverflow.net is a "free enough" license for text to be copied from there into Wikipedia without re-wording. To provide the necessary attribution, use a clear edit summary for the edit that adds the text (Something like "Adds text from <url> contributed to mathoverflow.net by <person> licensed under CC BY-SA 3"), and add a {{CCBYSASource}} to the foot of the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:25, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Request Photo Template

John, thanks for working on the change I requested related to the specific county. I had one additional thought on this. I've noticed that there are some major cities that have categories also, e.g. Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California. For these cases, the template should NOT drop the city. It should probably try to match the category first (as it is passed to the template), and only if that category doesn't exist, they try the partial match on the part after the comma. Not sure if you already took this into consideration. MB 15:37, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

@MB: Yes, my coding tries to match the whole "in" parameter first. Thank you for getting back to me! I found some independent news coverage of the merger and have used it to update the TBDA article. For an article on the Global Lyme Alliance to exist, there needs to be substantial independent news coverage of it. I've had a quick look, but most of the news coverage seems to be a quick mention of the GLA in the context of someone attending your gala events, which I doubt is enough. 25k+ page-transclusion request

Hi John, you've helped me with a request similar to this some time ago. If you have the time, I hope you could help me out again.

I'm going through transclusions of the 24 simplest-to-remove templates in Category:Templates not safe for use in citation templates and looking for possible offenders. Some of these templates transclude > (>>) 25,000 pages so I can't go any deeper than that. Could you get the full transclusion list for these templates?

  1. {{Abbr}} - 391k
  2. {{Nobold}} - 148k
  3. {{Noitalic}} - 27k
  4. {{Nowrap}} - 533k
  5. {{Small}} - 327k
  6. {{Spaced en dash}} - 28k
  7. {{Spaces}} - 1,458k (not a typo...)

@Tom.Reding: Hmm, no, I don't know a way to get the full transclusion list, either. But suppose I did, and managed to post a list of the 391k articles that use {{abbr}} - what would be your next step? AWB can process articles at roughly one a second, maximum, so doing anything with that list would take several days. I could perhaps come up with a regular expression that would catch <ref...>{{cite .... {{abbr ... </ref> where one of these templates is used inside a citation template inside a reference. Then a database scan would produce a much more useful list.
As an aside, I'm not convinced by efforts to clean up metadata by restricting the markup that can be used inside citation templates. Is it really not possible to spot, say, <span class="nowrap">....</span> inside a citation field, and remove the span tags from the metadata? Well, the CS1 parameters are meant to be literal (give or take wikilink brackets, usually) and not evaluated, so there is use in cleaning them up. I'm not cleaning up <span/div> CS1 markup at the moment, but there's probably a CS1 maint category for that (or should be).   ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf)  15:49, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

term "June's Head" on Field, BC article

Hi, on the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field,_British_Columbia I saw that you changed this sentence "On the actual site of Kicking Horse Campground, several nice homes were built for head people of the mines" to " On the actual site of Kicking Horse Campground, several upscale homes were built for the June's heads." I'm curious, what does this term "June's Heads" mean? I have never heard this before and cannot find any use of this online. Was this a mistake? Perhaps this sentence should be removed altogether, as there is no reference for this information, and these homes no longer exist. @Mtobey: No, my edit was this one, changing just one word. "June's Heads" was added in the following edit by Primergrey (talk · contribs). I don't know what it means.
The previous version of the text was added in this 2014 edit by an editor who is no longer active. Unfortunately that text matches this web site so I fear we have to treat the whole section as a copyright violation. It's possible that the same author posted the text at Wikipedia and at the external web site, but we can't be sure. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:34, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Help, please, for Whey...

The intro for this article states

Acid whey is manufactured during the making of rennet types of hard cheese like cheddar or Swiss cheese. Sweet whey (also known as "sour whey") is a co-product produced during the making of acid types of dairy products such as cottage cheese or strained yogurt.

Whereas under 'Production' it states

Sweet whey is the co-product of rennet-coagulated cheese and acid whey (also called sour whey) is the co-product of acid-coagulated cheese.

Now is that a contradiction or am I reading it wrong? If the former, could you correct it or bring in someone who can? If the latter... please clarify my confusion. All the Best! Shir-El too 08:08, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

@ArturSik: That article uses {{cite web}} and its companion templates, which is "Citation Style 1". The main help page for those is Help:Citation Style 1 and the section on 'publisher' and 'work' is half way down. I'd better confess that I've never read that section before! When I'm more awake I'll have a look through the Margaret article. Hello John! I wanted to ask for your help to help detect an issue we have on the Central Kurdish Wikipedia, we wanted to redesign the Arts Portal, we are trying to use the template random portal component, and are still testing on the portal to see how it is going, but there is this expression error that I can't figure out how to fix. I have read the help of the RPC template, and we also created one of the subpages here that the RPC template requires to work, but still there's an error that I can't fix. I would appreciate if you take a look at that for me. Thank you! @Lost Whispers: I can't test anything easily because the templates are semi-protected, but I can perhaps get you one step forwards. Where the templates fetch the current time in seconds using {{#time:U}}, that returns 1483009465 or similar here, but ١٤٨٣٠١٠١٤٨ or similar at the Central Kurdish Wikipedia. Numbers in that character set are not understood by #expr. Try adding an "en" language code {{#time:U||en}} to force the "time in seconds" to be output using the digits 0-9. You'll need to make that change in your "Rand" template and in your "Random portal component" template. Hey John of Reading, really sorry to pester you again, but it seems that you're the only one that knows about the random portal component around here. Do you have any clue why it doesn't work properly on the previous portal I stated above? The error is gone now, but it just won't change the article, it's always the first article, no matter how much I purge or reload the page it won't work. I have checked the max value and everything, they said that it had to be equal to the number of articles in the archive, i made sure it is that way but the problem hasn't been solved yet. Hello JoR. I wanted to update you in regard to our posts at the "Files for Discussion" page. It look like there are only two pics left created by that (those) editor(s). The one being discussed here and the one you posted about at Commons. I did use {{Db-f10}} on another pic that they had created and it was deleted yesterday. Although I would like to get these last two off of WikiP and Commons ASAP I also don't mind letting the discussion process run its course. My delete post at Commons is the only edit that I have ever made there - I don't know whether that will be a problem or not. Could I ask you to keep an eye on how that one goes?
