The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon

It would either be Equestrian statue of Richard I or no change from Richard Coeur de Lion (statue), depending on how much evidence there is for the latter as the WP:COMMONNAME. Guy the Gorilla statue - Crystal Palace

Morning Ham - I’m looking to do this article but we seem to be missing a photo. And not sure which London Borough I should place it in if I added it to the List of wanted photos. Arthur Sullivan Memorial

Hi Ham - not a biggie but I put VEG in as there are at least two more in London alone - the one at the Savoy and the one in St Paul's. I strongly suspect there are others, in the UK and internationally. So we may have to disambiguate sometime. But your call. KJP1 (talk) 17:26, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi KJP1 – I checked WP:D2D before making the move, and it says that disambiguation becomes necessary when there is "more than one existing Wikipedia article to which that word or phrase might be expected to lead". As I read it, that means that the existence of other articles (or the likelihood of ones being created in the future) – not the existence of other topics with the same name or description – is the determinining factor. And I can't really see the one in St Paul's getting its own article, to be honest; church monuments in Britain do seem to be rather under-covered here (except for Equestrian statue of Edward Horner, an FA) and I don't think that Sullivan's one would be in the top bracket of notability. What's the Savoy one – is it the Savoy Hotel Centenary Memorial? (But that's in Victoria Embankment Gardens, too.) I also couldn't find any others elsewhere. Ham II (talk) 09:01, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Morning Ham - No problem. You'll know the policy better than I. In addition to St P, and the Savoy, which as you say is in VEG, there's definitely a plaque on the site of the hotel in New York where he wrote some of Pirates, and I think there's another in Australia, not to be confused with this chap's, Arthur Sullivan V.C.. Being the contrary soul that I am, I shall probably go and write up the St.Paul's Memorial! But it will have to wait as I'm doing a Staffordshire church by England's first woman architect. Leonardo Paintings and associated pages

Ham II,

I really appreciate your edits to the pages I've been working on so far. (La Scapigliata, Portrait of a Musician and List of works by Leonardo da Vinci – the formatting in the dating notes especially looks great) I have big plans for Leonardo's works on Wikipedia and am working on his List of works with the intention of getting it to be a featured list some day – although a lot more work has to be done. I have to say that I don't agree with the indentation of the sources section, almost every page I have visited does not do that so I would prefer to keep it without the indentations. It is nice to see that someone else is checking in on these pages so if you ever find a major error, or inconsistency in the work I am doing, please don't hesitate to let me know. Action needed on Welsh Wikipedia by 13 July

Part of the code used on the main page of several wikis, including the Welsh Wikipedia, to improve the experience for mobile users has been deprecated since 2017. It will stop working on 13 July 2020 and so action is needed by an administrator on that projected before that date.

@Thryduulf: Thanks for this, but I'm afraid I'm not an admin on cywiki. Have you contacted anyone else there? I'm trying to work out a solution in this sandbox (shortened URL for the mobile version: https://w.wiki/U3r) but I haven't got very far. I don't know whether any of us at cywiki have the coding knowledge to fix this, so we might be asking for help. I've notified the admins at Y Caffi (the village pump) here. Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Reply tool

The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. One said, أعتقد أن الأداة تقدم فائدة ملحوظة؛ فهي تختصر الوقت لتقديم رد بدلًا من التنقل بالفأرة إلى وصلة تعديل القسم أو الصفحة، التي تكون بعيدة عن التعليق الأخير في الغالب، ويصل المساهم لصندوق التعديل بسرعة باستخدام الأداة. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

Thank you again for your comments at FAC. It makes me feel a lot better about the work I'm doing/plan to do that there is someone who knows Leonardo and has access to many sources whose able to advise, help and improve anything of his I'm working on. I'll be sure to invite you to PRs in the future, so that we can discuss things without the pressure of an FAC (which Gog has reminded us seem to have to stick to a pretty quick pace!). Also, I have recently been gifted this by a friend... which is remarkable to say the least... should bring some interesting things in the future...! Also, while I'm here, what do you think about splitting the medium and size info in List of works by Leonardo da Vinci to two different columns? The list it self still needs a bit of work, especially the lead and after the major works section, but I would think separating medium and size would create better and more logical sorbability. @Aza24: My pleasure. Your musical knowledge has really given the article a level of depth it would otherwise lack. I definitely agree about Peer Reviews, and I was going to suggest the same myself; I'd suggest having them after Good Article reviews rather than before, so that FAC standards can be applied – but at a more relaxed pace, as you said. Sorry I never spotted the Musician's Peer Review – though in honesty I would have been too busy in April to do anything about it.
Very jealous of you for having the Bambach – I didn't think Leonardo monographs could get any more enormous than her 2003 Met exhibition catalogue (which you seem to know about)! I agree that separating date and medium on the list of works would be better. Of course, this would have the effect of squeezing the prose in the final column even further. I personally would be in favour of having a second row for attribution status spanning the columns for other details – something a bit like this (the only example I could find). This could be sacrificing sortability for the sake of legibility, but there do seem to be featured lists which aren't sortable. Ham II (talk) 15:16, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
The multi-column split is a good idea, I've done it on some lists like List of operas by Claudio Monteverdi#Table. And I would agree that it makes more sense to have the attribution closer to the painting, after all if people are looking at the list they may be scrolling through so to have it earlier would make clearer a distinction between the attribution of the Mona Lisa with say, Madonna Litta. Looking at your sandbox Leonardo list, I think it can still be sortable, the only thing I'm not sure if can sort is the attribution status row... but it may be possible? With your permission I could give the table mechanics a shot in your sandbox draft... BTW I am slowly working on this which should be interesting, although it will take a while. @Aza24: Be my guest! I've not been able to get sorting to work myself; I can keep the attribution rows in the right place using |- class="expand-child", but the use of rowspan is the problem – to quote from further up that Help page, after sorting, the rowspanning cells are cut into rows and their content is repeated.
