Miscellaneous

  • There was a recent village pump thread about either Enterprisey's or Equazcion's "Script Installer" tool becoming a gadget. It wasn't officially closed, and so far neither has become a gadget. Stay tuned for updates.

Statues of Edward VI at St Thomas' Hospital

Hi Ham - hope you're keeping well. I thought I'd knock two more Grade II*s off the list. The two of Edward VI at St Thomas' will only require half the work! One odd thing - the photo of the stone (Cartwright) statue we're using shows he's missing his right arm. It was taken in 2013. The 2009 one we've got shows him with said arm, holding some sort of sceptre. The HE images, user-added and dated 2018, show the arm back in place. I assume it's been repaired and it would be good to have an up-to-date image if one's available? KJP1 (talk) 09:46, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

@KTC: Thank you so much for creating the two Edward VIs, Dr Barnardo and Paddington Bear. I can't see any better photos of the Cartwright on Geograph or Flickr, so I've requested one on both the article's talk page and WP:PALon. When I've got some time I'll look into finding some editors who are active in uploading pics of listed buildings in London. (I don't actually live there myself!) KTC - I hope I'm not being presumptuous, but I think I may be the intended recipient! But while we've got your attention, we're looking for an updated photo of this, Statue of Edward VI (Cartwright). You'll see he's missing his right arm in this 2013 photo. The latest Historic England images (2018) show him with his arm back, [1]. If your day happens to take you by St Thomas'...…. If you had more time, the setting looks rather insalubrious. Like he's standing outside a lavatory. If you had time to decorate it with some shrubs, a trellis of greenery etc., before taking your shot. KJP1 (talk) 13:30, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the paintings to the Notre Dame template, and thanks specifically for pointing out that Liberty Leading the People includes Notre Dame (for some reason I missed it in the painting, even standing in front of it for quite awhile). Good decisions on which to use, and nice work overall. The number and quality of editors working on Notre Dame articles since the fire is nice to see, kind of an artistic and religious monument that people took for granted and seldom thought about which suddenly has been once again catapulted to the public's attention level. A friend thought that Notre Dame was a fictional building until this week. Now that it's being found that most of the important things in Notre Dame are safe, and with he influx of attention, it's encouraging for faith in the human race to see people rallying around the topic. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 14

Updates: I've been focusing largely on the development side of things, so we are a lot closer now to being ready to actually start discussing deploying it and testing it out here.

There's just a few things left that need to be resolved:

  • A bunch of language support issues in particular, plus some other release blockers, such as the fact that currently there's no good way to find any hubs people do create.
  • We also probably need some proper documentation and examples up to even reference if we want a meaningful discussion. We have the extension documentation and some test projects, but we probably need a bit more. Also I need to be able to even find the test projects! How can I possibly write reports about this stuff if I can't find any of it?!

Some other stuff that's happened in the meantime:

  • Midpoint report is out for this round of the project, if you want to read in too much detail about all the problems I've been running into.
  • WikiProject Molecular Biology have successfully set up using the old module system that CollaborationKit is intended to replace (eventually), and it even seems to work, so go them. Based on the issues they ran into, it looks like the members signup thing on that system has some of the same problems as we've been unable to resolve in CK, though, which is... interesting. (Need to change the content model to the right thing for the formwizard config to take. Ugh, content models.)

Just... thank you for all your recent work related to sculptures. For participating in the MoS discussions, starting the RfC, etc. I see you're working here and this is exactly the type of work this project has needed for a long time. Will take some time to figure out how to move forward, and require work to get all the pages moved appropriately, but then hopefully moving forward we will have more consistent standards for Wikipedia. Side note: I see many links with "U.S. Capitol", but I think "United States Capitol" is better because I believe abbreviations are discouraged in article titles. Or, we might consider "National Statuary Hall Collection" as the disambiguator? Tricky group of articles because some have duplicates and others do not. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:54, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Thank you! I think for brevity's sake I'll stick with "U.S." for now until I can find a definite policy discouraging abbreviations, especially as there will be the argument that brevity has been lost with the addition of "Statue of...". There doesn't seem to have been a problem with the article title U.S. state. I don't plan to propose these changes for a while yet; I'm still trying to understand what the issues are at the moment. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of WP:TITLEFORMAT; I followed a link from it and it seems that "U.S." is positively encouraged when disambiguating! Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Abbreviations#Acronyms as disambiguators: "To save space, acronyms should be used as disambiguators, when necessary. For example, "Georgia (U.S. state)", "Great Northern Railway (U.S.)" and "Labour Party (UK)". The abbreviations are preferred over United States and United Kingdom, for brevity." That'll save a bit of time otherwise spent discussing this. Ham II (talk) 19:30, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Ham II, Apologies for my incorrect assumption. I vaguely recall learning otherwise, but perhaps that was for an abbreviation less obvious as United States --> US. My bad! WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 15

A final update, for now:


The third grant-funded round of WikiProject X has been completed. Unfortunately, while this round has not resulted in a deployed product, I am not planning to resume working on the project for the foreseeable future. Please see the final report for more information.
