DYK for BADBADNOTGOOD

Casliber (talk · contribs) 16:03, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi

I'd like to know what constitutes as "overcategorization" or what WP policy has to say. Thanks in advance :) -badmachine 22:01, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi badmachine. WP:CAT says that a "central concept used in categorising articles is that of the defining characteristics of a subject of the article. A defining characteristic is one that reliable sources commonly and consistently define the subject as having." Neither Category:Slashdot nor Category:Wikipedia are defining characteristics of GNAA, but rather just two of their targets. My reasoning for removing Category:Internet culture was that Category:Internet trolling is already a subcategory of Internet culture, same reason we wouldn't add Category:Internet there. WikiCup 2012 May newsletter

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Scotland Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, New York City Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Anything wrong with it?

Hi. I noticed this, and was wondering whether there was anything wrong with the section that I hadn't noticed? --OhioStandard (talk) 09:15, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Not that I know of. I thought it was much along the same line as the National Association of Manufacturers, which also has a long history of opposition to unions. The examples provided could better explain their direct relation to unions I suppose. Gobōnobo + c 09:22, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Greetings- about images in musicians' articles

Greetings! I have noticed your work from time to time. I am a biographer of musicians, primarily in the English Wikipedia. I am experienced, but know little about use of computers and how some wiki-tasks can be done. I was wondering if you might be able to tutor or help in some work here (mainly in dealing with images, which are my specialty in finding and uploading to Commons). I've uploaded and placed approx. 1,700 photos. The list has a link above my tiny gallery on my user-page, an almost complete list. I edit, negotiate for new photos from outside the Wikipedia, and clean up old articles, which often have only a few sentences! I need the help from others doing things like removing watermarks from photos already placed in articles here. I've requested help but the person who answered told me to "make a list of every article needing help, and then he can look at that and see what he can do. How to tell someone when it's a never-ending process? Some are my fault from my earliest uploads, not knowing (then) to tell photographers in Flickr to remove watermarks in advance of upload. Others I find while surfing for references for some articles to find references also used in them. Some need lightening, removal of frames, cropping, that kind of thing. Would you be willing to help with any of these articles' photos if I list them a little at a time? I don't have the knowledge, experience or updated computer to get those things done. If not, I'll sure appreciate it if you know anyone who might be willing to help. Thanks so much for your time! Please join the above-mentioned WikiProject, and help clean up old stubs before beginning some less noteworthy new projects! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 05:42, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Leahtwosaints. Thank you for all of your contributions - I've come across your photos a number of times and always appreciate illustration on articles. I don't think there's much need for you to create a list of photos that need changes like the one at User:Leahtwosaints/Sandbox 2. I've started going through your Commons contributions and marking those that need borders or watermarks removed by adding {{crop}} and {{watermark}} to the file pages. This automatically adds them to a images for cleanup category. Once labeled as such, the images with borders are usually cropped in pretty short order. Because the watermark category has a huge backlog, they may take some time for someone to get to them. For most images, I wouldn't be too worried about the aesthetic adjustments. Often the best option is to upload a better photo. For instance, you listed File:Jamie Babbit 2009.jpg as needing lightening, but that photo is so unflattering anyway. I think a better route would be to try to get in touch with Ms. Babbit or her publicist and ask that they upload a new photo. Usually if you can get through to the right person, they'll see the wisdom in replacing a bad photo like that.
Anyhow, it seems that your newer uploads tend not to have borders or watermarks, which is great. I think your time might be best spent uploading images rather than worrying too much about fixing the older ones. If you ever wanted to try out an image editing tool (I use GIMP), you might find that even being able to crop an image can allow for higher quality output. If not, that's fine too. Just be sure to mark images that need borders removed and try to avoid watermarks if you can. Hope that helps. Gobōnobo + c 07:59, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
I have to say that I am so thrilled to find another editor who understands and is willing to help!! I'm also impressed that you did take the time to look around my website to see the kinds of work I do. I, too, thought that listing uploads needing work separately would have sucked hours of my usual work needlessly. I spend more time recruiting new photos from photographers, (which involves introducing them to Creative Commons licenses, and what they mean), editing, copyediting, and so on. Of recent interest are the most recent photos I uploaded to Commons that need cropping. One is of Melissa Manchester, who is at the left of the photographer/fan who gave his permission to crop him out of the photo, two of Donna Summer, and a possible one of Belinda Carlisle. Thank you so much for your assistance! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:17, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Still need reviews for the Wikipedia Education Program research project

Hey, Gobonobo! If you have some time to review the quality of some articles, we're using the results for a really important research project that will help shape the future of the US/Canada Education Program. For a few projects, we're on a pretty tight timeline and are really eager to have many more of these articles reviewed over the next week. However, we think it's most useful to come from experienced Wikipedia editors.

I have gone through each class to prioritize for various projects, and everyone on the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation would be extremely grateful if you could participate by reviewing a few articles ('pre' and 'post' versions). If we can rally a lot of editors to review one or two articles each day, we will be able to make the most use of this research for our tight timeline. As many of our Ambassadors have requested it, we are really eager to find out which classes have been successful according to the Wikipedian standard.

If you can spare some time, please check out these priority articles and give it a go. Even 1 or 2 a day would help immensely! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 02:10, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. Good luck! Interest in C-SPAN?

Hi there - I noticed that you edited List of C-SPAN Q&A interviews first aired in 2012 recently. (Which is great, because I was starting to wonder how many people were taking an interest in it.) May I ask, do you have an interest in C-SPAN or that show, or do you have more of an interest in that author (Gretchen Morgenson), or did you just happen across it as a random fact that you wanted to add? Just curious. Thanks! KConWiki (talk) 00:56, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi KConWiki. I came across the list of Q&A interviews via the C-SPAN template, wanting to see if it was up to date. I was glad to see that the list was current and thought I'd chip in and add the upcoming show. I'm a bit of a C-SPAN junkie across the board, but am more likely to tune in to Washington Journal than Q&A unless it's an author or topic I'm interested in. Thank you for creating and updating the Booknotes and Q&A lists - this sort of documentation is a definite asset. Cheers, Gobōnobo + c 15:55, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
