April songs[edit]

story · music · places

The first (few) pics from back home, including our favourite place ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:23, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hope it was as enjoyable as it looked (the vacation, and the food). Floquenbeam (talk) 20:38, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We've finally got spring flowers here, too. I dumped some trellises in the backyard last fall, forgetting I'd planted daffodils in the same place. I went out to backyard to do a little early garden thinking, and discovered the daffodils had come up thru and around the trellises in a matter of days. To the point that if I tried to move the trellises, I'd be unable to avoid damaging the daffodils. So now I'm trapped, trellisless, until the flowers die off for the year. Floquenbeam (talk) 20:42, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Trellisless" should definitely be a word. Silly spellcheck. Floquenbeam (talk) 20:43, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yes - should be a word - both vacation and food were enjoyable - less enjoyable was a cold that kept me from singing in choir for Easter - at the same I had three articles on the Main page at the same time because they died, a sad record - yesterday's is a problem: I worked on the article in 2010 when I was impressed by his playing and dedication, but later others did the same, and without adding references, sigh - On a brighter note: which of the three appearances of Hildegard do you like best? I couldn't decide. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:17, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I like the composition of No. 1 the best. Floquenbeam (talk) 13:25, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marian Anderson is my top story today (by NBC, 1939), and below (on my talk) three people with raised arms, - and the place is the cherry blossom in Frauenstein --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:58, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Beautiful. Floquenbeam (talk) 13:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. For a short while last night, I had again three RD articles together on the page, including the Finnish organist who is probably the person having played most different organs, ever. He came to our church because it was a "free" day between two with a concert, and our conductor was afraid that he would have to entertain him, but no, he turned to the organ, fell in love with the instrument and played for the rest of the day, into the concert. I took photos but not good enough to share. I'll make him my story tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:34, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My story today is about a piece composed for the Second Sunday after Easter 300 years ago, and I just returned from a (long) opera about the same age, with soprano Pretty Yende --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:08, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
relief: the last of six RD articles in one week is now on the Main page - yesterday a great recital with many anti-war songs by Jewish composers whose music was banned by the Nazis. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:19, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
images of a flock of sheep that I met by chance on the 300th birthday of cantata Du Hirte Israel, höre, BWV 104 --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:41, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
today a sad task - memory of Andrew Davis - turned into entertainment (yt at the bottom of his article, actually both) -- the latest pictures capture extreme weather --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a lot of RD articles, sad to hear. Floquenbeam (talk) 16:10, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And again a rather sad story on the Main page, - yesterday's double bass story was more fun. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:03, 29 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
today you can look at the last three stories or "music" on my talk: the same topics, Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Samuel Kummer and (pictured) one row of 8 double basses and another of 5 bassists ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:34, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll have to keep an eye out for that double bass play (here, in English). Or, probably, someone has (illegally?) put it on YouTube by now. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:10, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That is not a real election. Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. And don't call me a Wikimedian. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:37, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hypothetically, if enough people vote "no" on the whole list, then no candidate will get the required 60% and we'll have a U4C with zero members. Again, hypothetically. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 00:28, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is that right? Perhaps I will vote then. Floquenbeam (talk) 17:54, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I opposed all, albeit with very little optimism it will all turn out alright. Floquenbeam (talk) 18:45, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it has to be a complete shutout to nullify the committee, I'm pretty sure they have a quorum they have to meet. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:47, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. I feel like we didn't pay enough attention at the start, and then things changed and we still didn't pay enough attention, and now we're in a situation where, if (say) 75% of editors felt they wanted a sea change in the way WMF operated, there is still simply no way to make that change democratically. It would only be thru some kind of strike, or some kind of bad publicity, or some faction inside WMF thinking they could use us to get more power. If we work really hard, we might be able to prevent things from getting worse, but I doubt we can ever make things better.
It's not so much that it's not an editor-driven movement, it's that the editors did drive the movement but gave it away by not caring or not paying attention or not understanding or being too trusting.
Eat the WMF. Floquenbeam (talk) 18:55, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was told on my talk page to share with members of the community that the ococ election is going on, so here I am, letting you know. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:29, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You...you...you Wikimedian you. Floquenbeam (talk) 17:54, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I consider myself an editor and certainly not a 'Wikimedian,' which induces nausea. Jip Orlando (talk) 14:22, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How do you feel about being called a "volunteer"? It always makes me feel like we're working for our hosting provider, rather than the other way around. – bradv 15:25, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if that's by intent? I believe our hosting provider seriously believes we're working for them. Floquenbeam (talk) 17:55, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to blow your mind, but we produce the content and they get the donations. Well not me, I don't really produce the content, but the general "we" does. I think that means we're working for them. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:11, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Haha! And the donations are spent elsewhere. With that, we've reached the point where Marx comes in. — Usedtobecool ☎️ 18:17, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When my wife was on a non-profit childcare board, and they had a free cookout for the families, I volunteered to cook hamburgers. When I edit here, it is a hobby, not a volunteer effort per se. Jip Orlando (talk) 14:40, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

May music[edit]

story · music · places

Some pics around the concert with the basses, and good luck finding a performance ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:55, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the flowers, Gerda. Having kind of a shitty day (nothing major, just the usual dozen minor annoyances that I seem incapable of handling gracefully), and seeing a new May music section legit helped. Floquenbeam (talk) 17:53, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - On the bicentenary of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, I remember our recent uplifting choral concert in pictures, on my user page and in my concerts (leading to the two at the church's article). The closest was in the paper. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:44, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
