DannyS712 has created a user script prototype, User:DannyS712/Cat links, that can pull members from a category, a functionality we've been after since the project's revamp last Spring. Now, it's a matter of applying this technique to scripts that will place the items where needed, such as in a section starter script and/or portal builder script.

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). Conversion continues

There are about 1100 portals left in the old style, with subpages and static excerpts. As those are very labor intensive to maintain (because their maintenance is manual), all those except the ones with active maintainers (about 100) are slated for upgrade = approximately 1000. We started with 1500, and so over a quarter of them have been processed so far. That's good, but at this rate, conversion will take another 3 years. So, some automation (AWB?) is in order. We just need to keep at it, and push down on the gas pedal a bit harder.

Flagship portals: the portals on the Main Page

Speaking of upgrades...

The following portals are listed in the header at the top of Wikipedia's Main Page, and get far more traffic than all other portals:

Of those, all but one have been revamped to an automated self-updating single-page design.

The remaining one, Portal:Mathematics has manual maintainers, and has been partially upgraded.

As these are our flagship fleet, they need to be kept in top-notch condition.

Check 'em out, and improve them if you can.

Deorphanizing the new portals

As you know, thousands of the new portals are orphans, that is, having no links to them from article space. For all practical purposes, that means they are not part of the encyclopedia yet, and readers will be unlikely to find them.

What is needed are links to these portals from the See also sections of the corresponding root articles.

Dreamy Jazz to the rescue...

Dreamy Jazz has created a bot to place the corresponding category link to the end of each portal (if it is missing), and place a link to each portal in the See also section of the corresponding root articles.

That bot, named User:Dreamy Jazz Bot, is currently in its trial period performing the above described edits!

To take a look at the edits it has made so far, see Special:Contributions/Dreamy_Jazz_Bot.

It shouldn't be long before the bot is processing the entire set of new portals.

Good news indeed.

Dreamy Jazz Bot is up and running!

Dreamy Jazz Bot has been approved and is now up and running.

What it does is places missing links to orphaned portals. It places a link in the See also section of the corresponding root article, and it puts one at the top of the corresponding category page.

We have thousands of new portals that have yet to be added to the encyclopedia proper, just waiting to go live.

When they do go live, over the coming days or weeks, due to Dreamy Jazz Bot, it will be like an explosion of new portals on the scene. We should expect an increase in awareness and interest in the portals project. Perhaps even new participants.

Another sockpuppet infiltrator has been discovered

User:Emoteplump, a recent contributor to the portals project, was discovered to be a sockpuppet account of an indefinitely blocked user.

When that happens, admins endeavor to eradicate everything the editor contributed. This aftermath has left a wake of destruction throughout the portals department, again.

Federal Republic of Lostisland

Hi there. I know micronations can raise passions on all sides, but I really don't think the redlink on Matthew Island and Hunter Island is appropriate. There has been a previous article on Lostisland which was deleted for non-notability. (Obviously, the Japanese Wikipedia has made a different decision or has not considered it that closely). There's been a lot of edit-warring in the past over the Matthew Island and Hunter Island article, which was eventually resolved with the agreement to include a small mention of the Lostisland claim but nothing more. Unless and until something changes to make it notable enough for its own article, I worry that adding a redlink risks starting up that edit war all over again. --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 17:34, 8 February 2019 (UTC)

@OpenToppedBus: if consensus is not to have a link, or anything else beyond that brief mention, then that's consensus. I'm more than happy to go along with it. But for the record, the article was not deleted for lack of notability. It was deleted for WP:CSD#A7, which considers article content, not the topic. If and when someone actually writes an article that is worth keeping we'll link to it in this article. Until then we don't need the link.This article has seen a long series of edits trying to push mention of ht supposed micronation in the absence of an article about it. We have discussed this issue extensively and the current content is the result of that discussion. You added the link and it was undone. Per WP:BRD you should take this to the talk page rather than restoring it,. Meters (talk) 01:01, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

The Ref desks survived the proposal to shut them down

You might be familiar with the Ref desks, by their link on every new portal. They are a place you can go to ask volunteers almost any knowledge-related question, and have been a feature of Wikipedia since August of 2005 (or perhaps earlier). They were linked to from portals in an effort to improve their visibility, and to provide a bridge from the encyclopedia proper to project space (the Wikipedia community).

Well, somebody proposed that we get rid of them, and the community decided that that was not going to happen. Thank you for defending the Ref desks!

The cleanup after sockpuppet Emoteplump continues...

The wake of disruption left by Emoteplump and the admins who reverted many (but not all) of his/her edits is still undergoing cleanup. We could use all the help we can get on this task...

10,000 portals, here we come...

We're at 5,705 portals and counting.

New portals since issue #28

Prior to 2018, for the previous 14 years, portal creation was at about 80 portals per year on average. We did over 3 times that in just the past 9 days. At this rate, we'll hit the 10,000 portal mark in 5 months. But, I'm sure we can do it sooner than that.

What's next for portal pages?

There are 5 drives for portal development:

Create new portals
Expand existing portals, such as with new sections like Recognized content
Convert or restart old-style portals into automated single-page portals
Link to new portals from the encyclopedia
Pageless portals

Let's take a closer look at these...

1: Creating new portals

Portal creation, for subjects that happen to have the necessary support structures already in place, is down to about a minute per portal. The creation part, which is automated, takes about 10 seconds. The other 50 seconds is taken up by manual activities, such as finding candidate subjects, inspecting generated portals, and selecting the portal creation template to be used according to the resources available. Tools are under development to automate these activities as much as possible, to pare portal creation time down even more. Ten seconds each is the goal.

Eventually, we are going to run out of navigation templates to base portals off of. Though there are still thousands to go. But, when they do run out, we'll need an easy way to create more. A nav footer creation script.

Meanwhile, other resources are being explored and developed, such as categories, and methods to harvest the links they contain.

2: Expanding existing portals

The portal collection is growing, not only by the addition of new portals, but by further developing the ones we already have, by...

Improving and/or adding search parameters to better power the Did you know and In the news sections.
Adding more selected content sections, like Selected biographies.
Adding and maintaining Recognized content sections, via JL-Bot.
Adding pictures to the image slideshow.
Adding panoramic pics.
Categorizing portals.

More features will be added as we dream them up and design them. So, don't be shy, make a wish.

3: Converting old portals

By far the hardest and most time-consuming task we have been working on is updating the old portals, the very reason we revamped this WikiProject in the first place.

There are two approaches here:

A) Restart a portal from scratch, using our automated tools. For basic no-frills portals, that works find. But, for more elaborate portals, as that tends to lose content and features, the following approach is being tried...

B) Upgrade a portal section by section, so little to nothing is lost in the process.

4: Linking to new portals

Or "portal deorphanization"...

Dreamy Jazz Bot is purring along.

And a tool in the form of a script is under development for linking to portals at the time they are created, or shortly thereafter.

Downgrade of Mirka Mora

Dear Finnusertop (alias I dream of horses?), I am mystified by your unexplained downgrading of Mirka Mora...I would have expected some discussion on the article talk page prior to your doing so. Do you have expertise on the subject, or is there some technical shortcoming with the article? Curious, Jamesmcardle^(talk) 22:03, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

@Jamesmcardle: did you read the page I linked to? Wikipedia:Content assessment/A-Class criteria is quite clear on the issue: in order to pass an article for A-Class there needs to be either a talk page discussion with multiple participants supporting the rating or a formal A-Class review at a WikiProject. I looked through the talk page and its archive and didn't see a discussion. I'm also assuming there wasn't a review at a WikiProject (they are usually linked to by using the template {{Article history}}). A-Class is just like GA and FA. It's not enough that one person thinks it meets the criteria, it needs a discussion. In short, the shortcoming here was of process (I've no opinion on the content of the article itself) and surely such an out-of-process change could be reverted. @Finnusertop: Thank you for your clarification. Strangely your comment at the bottom of Mirka Mora user page did not come up when I loaded the page, but does now. True, there was discussion involving Capitalistroadster and JennyOz on their user page, about the featuring of the article on Wikipedia's main page in the In the news section on 30 August 2018, but not about grading the article A class. Winner of Yeonpyeong bombardment

Hello Finnusertop, I recently noticed your redo on my update to Bombardment of Yeonpyeong which was made in regards to the winner of the battle. You asked for "a reliable source that directly says that", however, I am a little bit confused because there are literally hundreds of online references which gives different evaluations on this "winner" of the battle. I don't even think your request on the "reliable source" makes sense because the term "source" is only meant for the texts that describe measurable states or numerical amount from a certain incident, not politically biased views or propaganda. If you insist me to fetch a source that portrays NK as the obvious winner, maybe I can fetch some links from the North Korean news portal.

With that being said, I think it's way more appropriate for the editors to decide the winner using the very basic and common logic, rather than relying on a source. The winner, in fact, is a party who did achieve their goal by repelling/thwarting one's advance/interest. In this context, NK successfully aimed and stopped South Korean live-fire exercises by bombarding the island, while South Korea is reduced to stop it immediately. You need to be able to cite everything you write here to a reliable source. Making your own conclusions, or Wikipedia:No original research, as we call it, is not allowed. Kingdom Hearts ownership source

Why was the source that I used not considered reliable? the quotation is direct and addresses the ownership of the intellectual property? Iftekharahmed96 (talk) 22:05, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

@Iftekharahmed96: Because it didn't say Disney owns all original characters and worlds of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. It simply says Disney owns something. Copyright notices are notoriously vague. They haven't even been required by copyright law for several decades now, so what they say is largely inconsequential. There is no obligation to comprehensively identify who owns what. They are essentially there to provide vague contact information. Copyright protects works and parts of works, and the myriad of products in a franchise is an incredibly complex set of works. I don't think them being reliable is the problem. I think the problem is that it doesn't reflect what you think it does. If you can find a source that says "Disney owns all original kingdom hearts worlds and original kingdom hearts characters" then it can be kept.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 15:06, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

I took the time to do some further digging, and found Disney's page regarding its trademarks. https://support.disney.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000829466-Legal-Notices, from what it states here, they are copyrighting Kingdom Hearts, whilst giving copyright credit to Square Enix for their logo trademarks. A bit better, Iftekharahmed96, bit again hardly ideal. The same problems apply. These are neither comprehensive legal documents or conclusions drawn by reliable sources, so they are very vague.

But more to the point. We seldom talk about copyrights in articles. It's not the sort of information that the general public is usually interested in when it comes to a general introduction. Unless reliable sources talk about some copyright-related issue (like a controversy), should we? We shouldn't, because we follow the sources. And not just the facts (WP:V), but the proportional balance of coverage (WP:DUE). If not a single secondary source talks about copyright, then it's hardly noteworthy. There's a section for copyright in Peter and Wendy#Copyright status because there is a controversy that has been widely documented. Meanwhile, there is not a word on copyright at Mona Lisa or Atlas Shrugged, although we could describe these with a distinction (in public domain and copyrighted, respectively). – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 15:03, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

why is it that you cannot quote from your own work?

I confess that I recently quoted from my own work, not knowing that it was such an illegal practice but merely thought that I was contributing to the general knowledge for free, I don't sell my books. And suddenly this Indiana Jones operator of Wikipedia shouts/yells "HE IS PUBLISHING HIS OWN WORK!". It, to me, sounded like the utter ballyhoo of a fanatic and totally not worthy of any administrator. The ruthless way in which he instantly deleted my effort and time invested in my research getting to these findings must have tripped a wire that ignited a bomb inside of me. My only objective was to correct obsolete/wrong Wikipedia articles, and I did. But perhaps wikipedia is actually more bloody conservative than it is interested in new theories. Donald Trump cannot edit his Lemma on Wikipedia if he is using the username Donald Trump, but he can when he is in disguise? I was openly editing my own work on wikipedia, trying to improve the overall below average reliability of wiki articles and this is the thanks I get? Well, can you do me a favor and uncouple me from your platform totally.

He registered with his own name and so he was publishing on wikipedia with "Albert Einstein" as a nickname. Do you see the hypocrisy of it all? People do it all the time, but with different usernames! So, "indiana jones" is not only not doing his job, he is enjoying what he is misdoing. Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #031, 01 May 2019

Back to the drawing board

Implementation of the new portal design has been culled back almost completely, and the cull is still ongoing. The cull has also affected portals that existed before the development of the automated design.

Some of the reasons for the purge are:

Portals receive insufficient traffic, making it a waste of editor resources to maintain them, especially for narrow-scope or "micro" portals
The default {{bpsp}} portals are redundant with the corresponding articles, being based primarily on the corresponding navigation footer displayed on each of those articles, and therefore not worth separate pages to do so
They were mass created

Most of the deletions have been made without prejudice to recreation of curated portals, so that approval does not need to be sought at Deletion Review in those cases.

In addition to new portals being deleted, most of the portals that were converted to an automated design have been reverted.

Which puts us back to portals with manually selected content, that need to be maintained by hand, for the most part, for the time being, and back facing some of the same problems we had when we were at this crossroads before:

Manually maintained portals are not scalable (they are labor intensive, and there aren't very many editors available to maintain them)
The builders/maintainers tend to eventually abandon them
Untended handcrafted portals go stale and fall into disrepair over time

However, after the purge/reversion is completed, some of the single-page portals might be left, due to having acceptable characteristics (their design varied some). If so, then those could possibly be used as a model to convert and/or build more, after the discussions on portal creation and design guidelines have reached a community consensus on what is and is not acceptable for a portal.

Curation

A major theme in the deletion discussions was the need for portals to be curated, that is, each one having a dedicated maintainer.

There are currently around 100 curated portals. Based on the predominant reasoning at MfD, it seems likely that all the other portals may be subject to deletion.

Traffic

An observation and argument that arose again and again during the WP:ENDPORTALS RfC and the ongoing deletion drive of {{bpsp}} default portals, was that portals simply do not get much traffic. Typically, they get a tiny fraction of what the corresponding like-titled articles get.

And while this isn't generally considered a good rationale for creation or deletion of articles, portals are not articles, and portal critics insist that traffic is a key factor in the utility of portals.

The implication is that portals won't be seen much, so wouldn't it be better to develop pages that are?

And since such development isn't limited to editing, almost anything is possible. If we can't bring readers to portals, we could bring portal features, or even better features, to the readers (i.e., to articles)...

Some potential future directions of development

Quantum portals?

An approach that has received some brainstorming is "quantum portals", meaning portals generated on-the-fly and presented directly on the view screen without any saved portal pages. This could be done by script or as a MediaWiki program feature, but would initially be done by script. The main benefits of this is that it would be opt-in (only those who wanted it would install it), and the resultant generated pages wouldn't be saved, so that there wouldn't be anything to maintain except the script itself.

Non-portal integrated components

Another approach would be to focus on implementing specific features independently, and provide them somewhere highly visible in a non-portal presentation context (that is, on a page that wasn't a portal that has lots of traffic, i.e., articles). Such as inserted directly into an article's HTML, as a pop-up there, or as a temporary page. There are scripts that use these approaches (providing unrelated features), and so these approaches have been proven to be feasible.

What kind of features could this be done with?

The various components of the automated portal design are transcluded excerpts, news, did you know, image slideshows, excerpt slideshows, and so on.

Some of the features, such as navigation footers and links to sister projects are already included on article pages. And some already have interface counterparts (such as image slideshows). Some of the rest may be able to be integrated directly via script, but may need further development before they are perfected. Fortunately, scripts are used on an opt-in basis, and therefore wouldn't affect readers-in-general and editors-at-large during the development process (except for those who wanted to be beta testers and installed the scripts).

The development of such scripts falls under the scope of the Javascript-WikiProject/Userscript-department, and will likely be listed on Wikipedia:User scripts/List when completed enough for beta-testing. Be sure to watchlist that page.

Where would that leave curated portals?

Being curated. At least for the time being.

New encyclopedia program features will likely eventually render most portals obsolete. For example, the pop-up feature of MediaWiki provides much the same functionality as excerpts in portals already, and there is also a slideshow feature to view all the images on the current page (just click on any image, and that activates the slideshow). Future features could also overlap portal features, until there is nothing that portals provide that isn't provided elsewhere or as part of Wikipedia's interface.

But, that may be a ways off. Perhaps months or years. It depends on how rapidly programmers develop them.

Keep on keepin' on

The features of Wikipedia and its articles will continue to evolve, even if Portals go by the wayside. Most, if not all of portals' functionality, or functions very similar, will likely be made available in some form or other.

And who knows what else?

People who died in office

I am now aware of Wikipedia and the full lists of dead people but if it were solely people who died in office (as in like people who were ruling a country that died in office) do you think it'd be fine? @Cinefan Cinefan: I'd say maybe yes. In fact, we currently have Category:Presidents of the United States who died while in office. But it should be noted that that particular category has been deleted a few times and then recreated, so it's a bit controversial. You should read those deletion discussion to see if the arguments affect your proposed category, here:

Dead people category

Fyi (if you care) I've also started to realize why people are opposed to the dead people category. I'm not entirely opposed to it (obviously) especially since the living people category exists but I've started to realize why some are opposed to it. The Faculty of Useless Knowledge

Hello,Finnusertop! Could you take a look at the article "The Faculty of Useless Knowledge"? Someone removed the most important section (Plot of the book) which I translated literally from the Russian Wikipedia. It took a lot of time to translate and polish the text in English and without that sections the article looks like "a stub". In my opinion, cutting the entire section without even checking it is equal to vandalism and disregard for the Russian culture. @Goodtiming8871: you can read my comment in the thread: Talk:2019 Koreas–United States DMZ Summit#Title. Frankly, I think someone ought to initiate a {{Requested move}}. When I made my comment, I had gone through each of the sources cited in the article. I think about three or so called it a summit. The rest did not. Some even contrasted this meeting with the past and future summits, ruling out that it was one of them. Kim Kum-sil

I wonder about Kim Kum-sil. You edited this as edits of 23 June 2018. Googling 김금실 site:kcna.co.jp informs of the footballer, the 12th Supreme People's Assembly member (2009, 제232호선거구 김금실), and the 13th SPA member (2014, Nyongbyon, 제278호 녕변선거구 김금실). Electoral District 232 of 2009 election cannot be searched. But District 232 of 2014 election is Wai, Sinuiju and District 232 of 2019 election is Ryusang, Sinuiju. Nyongbyon is far from Sinuiju. So, I think that there exist at least three Kim Kum-sil, i.e. footballer Kim 김금실 축구, Sinuiju Kim 김금실 신의주, Nyongbyon Kim 김금실 녕변. Sawol (talk) 12:16, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Sawol! At least Kim Kum-sil the footballer and Kim Kum-sil the SPA member elected in 2009 are definitely the same, because the source I cite identifies her as "Women's Football (Soccer) Player; Merited Athlete". I never assume that a politician and a similarly named sportsperson are the same unless sources say so and it makes sense (e.g. she's old enough to be in that position).

But are the Nyongbyon Kim Kum-sil and the Sinuiju Kim Kum-sil the same?

You need to understand how the electoral system works in order to appreciate the the discrepancy between the electoral districts. The candidates don't have to live anywhere near their constituencies. Any district in the country can nominate anyone from the entire country (or, in practice, the party orders each district to nominate someone particular from someplace particular in the country). For most candidates, it's seemingly random where they get elected and re-elected from. For high-ranking officials, there's sometimes symbolism (i.e. Kim Jong-un being elected from Paektusan in 2014, even though he obviously doesn't live there). But it's not unusual at all for a person to be re-elected from an entirely different district (in fact, that seems to be the norm). Let's follow someone famous whose parliamentary track record is quite well known, Kim Yong-nam: 1986 (556: Chegang), 1998 (either 344 or 656), 2003 (6), 2009 (5), 2014 (55: Unha), 2019 (47, Rangrang). It changes every year. Granted, the small numbers are problably all from Pyongyang, but frankly I think Kim Yong-nam already lived there and not some province in 1998 and 1986 when he was the Foreign Minister. You can check any name and find that the electoral districts will be all over the map.

It's of course possible that the two parliamentarians Kim Kum-sil are different, but I don't think there is any reason to assume it. It's an active politician, these are consecutive elections, and the electoral district is inconsequential. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 12:10, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

The only words Google Translate has had real trouble with here are korppi ("raven") and korpi ("backwoods", which you will also find in the name of the band), and I've fixed those. Tagging of Algatron

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on Algatron. I do not think that Algatron fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because The Afd determined (with only 2 participating editors) that this should be deleted for lack of cited sources (only 1 was present). There are now several cited sources and more content. This is therefore not "substantially similar" to the previous version. This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.
