Yes, I probably overreacted with the references to CIVIL and NPA. I've been involved in some disputes lately so I may have seen something that wasn't there. RE: References

Hi Deryck,

Nice talking to you too. Regarding sources, generally reliable sources are required to properly cite an article. WP:RS has a pretty good discussion about how to determine reliability. Overall, the first three sources you mention, dictionaries, university reference books and secondary school textbooks are probably decent sources. Each one should be evaluated against WP:RS, however; as I'm sure you know, not every school textbook is 100% factual!

Regarding self works, those should also be compared to WP:RS standards, and if they meet the muster then they can usually be included as well. However it generally helps to avoid conflict of interest concerns by bringing sources that you are connected to personally to some sort of review first - I'd start by mentioning them on the article's talk page and waiting for other editors to comment. There are other ways to get more eyes on a topic too if needed, I can help you find those if you'd like, just let me know. --AbsolutDan ^(talk) 01:17, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

While I admit I'm not the best at finding sources (which is why I generally don't write articles, I mostly do cleanup work), I can certainly help evaluate any sources you and others may find. Great work on finding those references! I just have mild concerns with some of them: the Associated Research, Electric Fence On-line and System Connection references. Those 3 are companies, and I'm not sure they qualify as reliable sources. Maybe the Associated Research one, as they seem to be a more solid and long-lived company. On the other hand, those are merely glossary links, so perhaps it's not as important as if they were full articles we were using as sources.

The Sorcerer Sound reference, on the other hand, does appear to be full articles, again written/affiliated with a company, and may constitute original research. They may have been written by employees of the company, not researchers in the field.

None of these references I'm concerned with are sufficiently problematic to warrant immediate removal however (in my opinion) - but it would be great if better sources could be found to replace them at some point.

TimVickers images on WP:IfD

I nominated a number of images by User:TimVickers for deletion on January 29. None of them are being used in any articles, although a few have been superseded. I notified TimVickers of the nomination and his response on my Talk page was 'Delete away'.

I don't know enough about the images to know how valuable they would be in articles. If they could be useful in an encyclopedic context they should be kept, either by incorporating them into articles as you did with Phenylalanine hydroxylase last night or by moving them to the commons where they could be used by other language wikipedias as well.

I have seen your work on the Xylitol article, and get the feeling that you're much more competent than I am with this type of stuff. If you haven't already, could you look through the rest of the TimVickers nominations and see which could be valuable? Oxford Road

The problem with your DYK nom isn't that the road is named after Oxford, it is that you make a connection between Oxford University and the fact that Oxford Road has schools (in a similar vein we could try: "While Mars Bars are eaten by people who have been to space, the planet Mars is also in space"). If the road had been named after Oxford University and specifically chosen as the site of the schools for that reason, and there was a source to back up that claim, then we could use something similar. As it stands, both the nomination and the article make this erroneous connection (the article is actually worse, as the phrasing "Just like the University of Oxford, Oxford Road is home to many schools" suggests that Oxford University contains many schools). B rating for Lam Tin

HI Deryck

In my opinion it deserved a B. It won't be up to me to give a GA, you will have to nominate it for debate, and do something about any suggestions or criticisms. Its much easier than getting a FA rating - the article would gather plenty of criticism, everthing has to be perfect even things that you did not think of.

We should probably have a standard for what to include in regional articles, but you get an idea when you look at the best ones around.

One of my interests is geology, so I have added the rock (granite) found in Lam Tin.

My other suggestions are to get a free map to replace the one there - prehaps you have to draw it yourself or take a good photo. The first line appearance has to be tidied up as it has a big white space on my screen!

I arent sure if the discussion should take place there at all [2], so I am transplanting it here as well for more in-depth discussion:

Before I give the full facts behind my stand, may I respond with regards to User:Deryck Chan's comment above.

If Deryck Chan's comments on my failure to act according to concensus is based on an example like Hong Kong Central Library, then I must point out that in such instances, it is almost always a case of Wikipedia:Consensus being pitted against Wikipedia:Verifiability. My primary contention is that the contributors to the said article has been unable to cite any reliable, non-self-published source, nor any official government document supporting views as advanced by the "majority", practically all of whom where Hong Kongers and thus with vested interests on the said topic. Not to say local knowledge or community concensus are unimportant, and nor am I comfortable with the idea of pitting one policy against another, but in all past disputes I have been invovled in, Wikipedia:Verifiability has always prevailed over Wikipedia:Consensus, unless I have interpreted this wrong all along. I hope someone can enlighten me if the later is true.

May I also refer to his suggestion that I was wikistalking his edits. I do hope he may provide some evidence for this allerged behavior.--Huaiwei 15:45, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Audrey Eu

I am not aware that Audrey Eu called herself the 'house leader', because it is indeed very misleading, as no other HK political party uses it. The only 'house leader' understood by the average reader is that of the Western system, i.e. parliament leader. If you can clear this up on her biographical page, then that would be the best compromise of all - and of course, if possible, cite an instance where a formal source has actually referred to her as a house Leader??? Yes, especially if the categorization is something controversial. If there is a category which cannot be verified (ie, unverifiable,) it should be removed. However, make sure the category really is unverifyable, not just unverified. Footnotes, obviously, cannot be added to a category tag. Without knowing which category or categories are troubling you, I can't give more specific advice. As for my "new" coachee, he is user:Fabrib, but I've been working with him for a while. Hong Kong isn't a nation, so I'd be careful putting it into any sort of category like that. If there are sources which claim it is a national library, those can be used to support the proposed category, but since this addition is highly controversial, the talk page is the place to discuss the changes (providing your sources, of course). Proposed MTR Move

There is currently a move debate taking place at the MTR talk page. The proposed move is from MTR to MTR (rapid transit system). Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Remove, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Assistance request

Looking at Lam Tin, it actually looks to be in pretty decent shape (certainly far better than most location articles we've got around here.) If what you want is some more eyes on the article, there are several steps you can take. You can always bring it up with the relevant Wikiproject (in this case, WP:HK), and you also may wish to see if WP:CHINA would help, to get some more eyeballs. To involve the community at large, you can ask for a peer review, or make a listing on the article improvement drive. (Even if your article isn't actually the winner at article improvement, just having it listed there can bring a lot of eyeballs.) Good luck with it, you're doing a great job so far! Geology of Hong Kong

My map is from 1979, your 1999 map is more likely to be correct! At least Cretaceous is next to Jurassic. Is the whole of the Hong Kong Is granite Cretaceous? GB 06:31, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
