Deryck's Stand[edit]

(see /Archive 2 and User talk:Huaiwei for related discussions)

It may surprise you if I tell you that I never intended to "back Instantnood" by any means - at least, I opposed having the HK flag coming with a "national flag status". What I'm doing is just to try asserting my own opinions and views and apply them on wikipedia.

I often thought that things on wikipedia are really too tight. People in FAC discussion cross out 80% of my comments by a reason "not conforming/applying to FAS rules". As I can see, most wikipedians are doing exactly the same, and this is what I'm afraid of.

I just really, really hope that you're not going to fall into the same trap by applying man-made rules without a room for exception.

It's seen by all of us that, despite the general rules for a "national library", the Catalonian Library went onto the list. My view is that, if there's one exception, why can't there be another? Life and rules shall all be flexible.

However your view is that, we've violate the rule once. Of course we don't want to violate it twice.

There's no absolute right or wrong between the 2 views (the believer of a flexible life and the believer of absolutely correct rules). However, should the custom "do in Rome what the Romans do" a better way to solve this problem?

Hoping for your reply. Deryck C. 07:07, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just to let you know that I do intend to reply to you with regards to the above. But as I am reallymentaly drained now, and not exactly "in the mood" yet, I will do so a little later or tomorrow. Hope you dont mind the delay, and wont think that I have abandoned all negotiations. Thank you for your kind understanding and God bless! ;)--Huaiwei 13:04, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

The mop is mine!

Thanks for voting in my RfA; I promise I'll wield my sacred mop with care. If you ever need me for anything, you know where to find me. Thanks again! -- Essjay · Talk 15:30, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for giving thanks back!!! ^_^ Deryck C. 04:31, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deryck's Stand (con't 1)[edit]

Replying Huaiwei:

It's true that I've seen your delays in replying to our acts. In fact, recently I'm in quite a conflict with Instantnood about the "national flag" stuff. Everybody got his unique stand, but by concensus I hope all of us can work well together!!! Deryck C. 13:41, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To Instantnood Jerry:
Thanks for that grammar fix. Deryck C. 15:33, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't me who did it, but Jerry [1].. :-D — Instantnood 15:57, July 21, 2005 (UTC)
Is it? Lemme check the history. Ah, yup, then thank you both.

Thanks Instantnood and Jerry. Deryck C. 17:10, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

:-) — Instantnood 17:26, July 21, 2005 (UTC)
Did you add my talk page to your watchlist? How can you reply so quickly? (16 minutes!) Deryck C. 17:27, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jerry's Barnstar[edit]

(original message on Jerry's talk page) Much thanks for buying my points in many discussions. ^_^ BTW why don't you put the Barnstar onto your user page instead of leaving it like an orphan here? Deryck 17:53, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're much too welcome. As to the barnstar, erh, I just don't wanna brandish it in my user page -- that gives me an ill feeling of showing off. :-) -- Jerry Crimson Mann 17:58, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Up to you then. Deryck C. 02:03, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

The "Fl" stands for Florida, the state in the United States where I reside. "Cello" means that I am a cellist, and "guy" just means person. No, "cello" doesn't stand for cellophane... (sorry, bad joke) Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 04:14, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, of course, I never thought of the "cellophane". Deryck C. 13:18, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Deryck Chan/Archive 3. Thank you for submitting an entry to the pre-round and/or participating in round one of WP:MIND. I sincerly hope you enjoyed it. Round Two, which I have made a bit more difficult than round one, will open at approximately 2 PM EST, Sunday, July 24. In addition, the voting for pre-round has also been extended until the end of round two. I hope to see you at Round Two, so prepare for some WikIFun!!! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 17:10, 23 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

EST=GMT+? ..Deryck C. 07:51, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If your EST is most commonly used GMT-5, the competition will be very unfair to me, because I'm at GMT+8, that means the competition starts at 3am in the morning. Deryck C. 07:54, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings to you, Deryck, and congratulations on your prowess in the Mind Bender game. I appreciate your kind comments to me, and I look forward to a rousing Round Two! You expressed disbelief that English was my only language, but I must confirm that this is true. To my regret and embarassment, I speak no other language! I also think have identified a real problem with the time zone inequality of the game. I wonder if there is a way to solve this? Best wishes for future rounds. -- ROYGBIV 16:11, July 24, 2005 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there will always be the issue of time zone differences- no matter what time I post it, it will be 3 AM somewhere in the world. I completely understand your feelings; do you have any suggestions to improve this? Also, I must mention that I chose this time because my computer access is extremely limited- I only have access to a computer lab right now, which is rarely open. I have compensated for this by making the questions (I hope) more difficult and challenging. Have fun in round two! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 18:35, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Much thanks for all your kind comments, but what I think is, as the time difference exists, I have just 2 choices, namely:
  1. Advocate a new score system and harder questions to ensure that latecomers (in fact just late for a few hours) can gain marks.
  2. Withdraw from the competition. (and become a question-setter?)
Frankly I prefer the latter as it will cause less burden to everybody currently involver, especially Flcelloguy. Deryck C. 04:07, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, you can help me maintain the page. Do you want to start with Round 3? I have one problem written for it (a code that I haven't typed yet), and I usually take some questions off of websites. See User:Flcelloguy/Mind Benders (Spoiler warning: don't view the page if you don't want to know the answers to the remaining two questions). Contributions for questions are always appreciated! The 1970s[edit]

(original message on User talk:Warofdreams) The word "the" as in "The 1990s in Hong Kong", "The 1970s in Hong Kong" etc. has a special meaning. Please don't erase the word from the title. Deryck C. from Hong Kong, 12:26, 25 July 2005 (UTC).[reply]

I didn't mean to start any arguments; I assumed the article had been started by someone unaware that all similar articles omit "the" from their titles - e.g. 1970s in film or 1840s in sports. What special meaning does "the" have in the title of this article? Warofdreams 12:38, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
(also on User talk:Warofdreams) Just custom. In Hong Kong, everybody says "The 1990s" instead of simply "1990s". Therefore to conform the wikipedian custom (use British spelling and usage in Britain related articles, Aussie spelling and usage in Australian articles, similarly use Hong Kong-style wordings in Hong Kong related articles) the word the is put into the article series: The 1960s in Hong Kong, The 1970s in Hong Kong, The 1990s in Hong Kong. Much thanks for agreeing to talk with me and much thanks if you'll not do that retitling again. Deryck C. 12:46, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your explanation and my apologies for moving the articles without discussion. I am, however, not convinced by your argument. For instance, in the UK we always refer to the country as the United Kingdom, and yet the article on the nation is of course at "United Kingdom". Similarly, we have the River Thames and, indeed, the 1990s. As a result, I'm planning to list the pages on WP:RM.
Currently I don't agree with your point (River Thames etc.) but as one of the "Hong Kong Dragonheads", Jerry, has decided to vote an affirmation, I may reconsider my vote. Deryck C. 16:11, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Porgy and Bess FAC[edit]

The recordings with dubious copyright status have been removed, and additional pictures added. Are there any other objections that you might have to the article? (WP:FAC#Porgy_and_Bess) Cheers. --BaronLarf 16:40, July 25, 2005 (UTC)

I've withdrew my opposition. However, more efforts are required on the pictures. Deryck C. 16:47, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sango's RfA[edit]

Cake for you!

Hi, Deryck. Thank you very much for supporting my RfA! I will try my best to demonstrate that your praise was well-placed and wield the mop responsibly. Sango123 01:37, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

Well, I'll support you, of course, because you really deserve adminship. Just one question: are you a boy or a girl? Deryck C. 03:59, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a she. Nice new signature, by the way! Thanks again, Sango123 15:07, July 27, 2005 (UTC)

Arkuat's first barnstar (history of chemistry)[edit]

Recognition at last! Thank you for your award. I'll figure out where I most want to show off my very first barnstar after I've had a chance to bask in the glory for a while. --Eric Forste (talk) 04:26, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure to receive thanks from you. Deryck C. 04:36, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mind Benders[edit]

Hello, Deryck. What you can do is place the questions on Wikipedia:Mind Benders/Round Three. When the round is ready to be opened, all we have to do under the "Current Round" section is place {{/Round Three}} and it will show up. We can copy and paste round two into the round three page, change the "Answer this question" link to make it right, add a spoiler warning, and begin writing questions. Let me know what you think! Oh, BTW, nice sig. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 15:53, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What can I say? Well, really, really much thanks! Deryck C. 16:53, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Email[edit]

(original message on User talk:Essjay) Is it possible for to give me your email address so that I can contact you when I'm in need for some sysop actions? (esp. when I'm accidentally being blocked) Deryck C. 05:37, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deryck: I'd be happy to give you my email. It's a hotmail account, and the username is essjay-wiki. If you use MSN Messenger, you can IM me that way too. -- Essjay · Talk 04:35, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. I hope I don't need to contact you. Deryck C. 06:02, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you need anything, whether its admin related or not, feel free to drop me a line. My talk page is usually the quickest way to get me, but email works too. -- Essjay · Talk 12:50, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. In that case you're really a Wiki fanatic! Deryck C. 05:12, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

IDRIVE[edit]

You showed support for This week's Improvement Drive.
This week Napoleonic Wars was selected to be improved to featured article status.
Hope you can help…
Hi, Deryck, thanks for your note. I don't understand templates much yet, but I'm learning. Maurreen (talk) 14:33, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. Deryck C. 08:45, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of HK[edit]

(also on User talk:K.C. Tang) I wanna ask for your opinions about the "drape tastefully" and the "beginning of the circle" phrases in the Flag of Hong Kong article. Frankly I don't understand what does it mean by "with the flag draped tastefully from it" and the actual position of the "beginning of the circle". Deryck C. 04:05, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Tasty is different from tasteful :-D. Tasteful means showing good taste. Thus drape tastefully equates with drape decently. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 04:20, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Aiya... I hope I will have some time to go through the whole article, but of course u can edit it when u find something obscure. As the Wiki guys always say: Be bold (though I myself is often not bold enough to do so in some cases!) By the way, I notice that u r involved in the Sicence of the Week project, do u think it would be fun to creat a "History of Chinese Chemistry" entry? :D --K.C. Tang 04:41, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
History of Chinese chemistry!? I thought it stopped ever since Han Dynasty's 獨尊儒術 thing. Deryck C. 04:44, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Not really...It involves a lot of alchemy stuff, u know, the Taoist dream of making "long-live never-age potion". Alchemy is quite popular in HK recently thanks to that anime (what's its eng name?) --K.C. Tang 04:48, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Longevity potion, as I've seen on computer games. Deryck C. 05:29, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

McDull[edit]

(original message on User talk:HappyCamper)I wonder where do you come from? You seem to have so much idea about Cantonese history. Deryck C. 05:57, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Have you watched My life as McDull before? --HappyCamper 07:19, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, what's the deal? Deryck C. 07:22, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I did as well. :) -- Jerry Crimson Mann 07:24, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think most Hong Kongers did. Deryck C. 07:25, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we should edit that page and get it up to featured article status! --HappyCamper 07:27, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Try to nominate the page to here. Btw, I've the DVD of the movie. Want some screenshot? I think you should make reference of some film-related FAs before further improvement. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 07:33, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Then you'll do it. Deryck C. 07:37, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
