Geonotices[edit]

Hi. I just wondered if you have any ideas on the timescale for discussions at Wikipedia:Geonotice. How do things normally proceed, please? Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 10:16, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Meritocracy. If an admin takes action, things happen. I was half-expecting Tom Morris to put up the notices after discussing with you; anyway I've now put them up. Deryck C. 11:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The build for said PPV has begun, the article must not be unprotected so building of the article can begin per the usual routine. Things added at this time are the infobox, the lead, the background section, the matches, etc. and all can be sourced now. CRRaysHead90 | Get Some! 01:26, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I put a "not" there that shouldn't be there. I'm requesting the article be unprotected, for the reasons I said after the mistake. CRRaysHead90 | Get Some! 02:47, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The reason the previous incarnations don't look notable is because they were built 2 months ago when the for WrestleMania XXVIII was happening, now that it's being built towards notability is established due to the numerous sources and on screen happenings. I strongly suggest you discuss this with the Pro wrestling project, they will tell you how things usually work, and I promise you it satisfies policies and guidelines. I built the article in my sandbox, this is what the article will and should look like at this point. User:CRRaysHead90/sandbox/Extreme Rules (2012). CRRaysHead90 | Get Some! 20:56, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've had to re-edit this persons cutting stuff off without discussion on the sword and sandal page again. Foofbun (talk) 22:05, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    • Hi Deryck,

I strongly believe the Sword and Sandal page should be modified to registered users only. When I first came across the article, not only was it unreferenced, but seemed to be written as one person's opinion on the the topic with this person eliminating any modification of his or her monologue. Reading the talk page seemed to show a collection of antagonism, but produced little that would improve the article. My view is that this individual may at one time have been a registered user, but rather than entering discussion would reedit all edits to go back to his original opinion.

I believe that Wikipedia should have a world view. The sword and sandal topic is, to me an interesting one, but unlike other film genres some people regard the subject as often a ludicrous one based on their only contact with the genre being by only viewing faded English dubbed prints originally meant as a television package in the public domain. In my own experience I first came across serious silent film classics dubbed for comedy on the Fractured Flickers, years later I would see scenes paraphrased on documentaries, but it was some time before I was able to see uncut original versions shown at the correct or near correct speed. In recent years some of these original uncut prints have surfaced in excellent condition with more sensible original dialogue. The point is that one can't base an entire genre on prints seen on MS3TK, as you couldn't base the silent film genre on Fractured Flickers.

In the genre there are the silent films, the 1950s "historical" films featuring major Hollywood stars, then the original Steve Reeves Hercules, and the imitations, then the genre's comeback. Most have been international co-productions between France and Italy and sometimes the United States.

By making the topic one for registered users only we can have people familiar with Wikipedia's policies who can improve the article with references from various reliable source. Thank you.Foofbun (talk) 07:31, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1870s Cambridge albumen album[edit]

Thanks for the appreciation! I did my undergraduate degree at Cambridge, though a few years ago now. But I saw these pics, and thought it would be a fun challenge to identify the last few that hadn't been placed. The real credit though goes to the readers of nwhyte's livejournal, in particular livejournal user unwholesome_fen, who was the one it was that made the key identification.

I was sufficiently inspired by the chase to start Commons:Illustrations and engravings of Cambridge, to 1923. There's quite a lot more still sitting on my hard-drive to be uploaded, but I reckon it may take several months to get the page fully filled out. I was going to wait till I'd got the project a little more complete before telling WP:CANTAB or WP:Cambridge University Wikipedia Society about it. But there are some quite useful plans of the historical development of the colleges, in Commons:Category:Cambridge Described and Illustrated, that it might be quite nice to make colour SVG versions of, if anyone was seeking a project.

Thanks again for the encouragement. All best, Jheald (talk) 13:49, 21 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! What happened is... that was a guy who died in a plane crash. Originally I redirected names of those passengers to their respective accidents if they were not Wikipedia notable, but the consensus said that those redirects shouldn't be put into place, so I stopped making them. Your change was fine! WhisperToMe (talk) 17:32, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, I know that his case was covered in some documentaries about the crash, but as a typical "family in disaster" scenario. In Mayday his mother discussed what he was doing. He, his brother, and father were returning to the U.S. from a vacation in Mexico. But AFAIK he didn't get a lot of press coverage (not like Rika Matsuda in KE801), and he wasn't one of the flight crew members. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:49, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Protection for Bade Achhe Lagte Hain[edit]

Hi! I am Jagadhatri. Nearly 2 or 3 months ago you semi-protected the article: Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and dropped me a message saying: "If any further vandalism takes place leave me a message" and I would like to inform you that IP users and even some registered users have started vandalizing the article by deleting references and other useful information. It is in my watch list but I was surprised by seeing that even after adding it to my watch list people have vandalized the article and the edits did not appear in my watch list. And it is very difficult to keep track of vandals in this way. I would request you to go through the article's history and semi-protect it so that IP users don't get the opportunity to vandalize it (God knows about the registered users). I being a members of Wikiproject: Soap Opera it's my duty to protect and make soap opera articles better. Please, if you are replying me then leave me a Tb template. Thank you in advance --Jagadhatri(২০১২) 09:28, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Soap Operas doesn't cite anywhere that the plot must be 700-800 words. And please don't judge on what I know and what I don't. I can assess your knowledge of editing though. Please go on and keep piling the plot until you are satisfied.HARSH TALK 09:00, 14 May 2012" and humiliating, embarrassing and threatening an user may result to block the user from editing (See this, to be satisfied: Wikipedia:Harassment), and WP:PLOT and WP:FILMPLOT says: "Plot summaries should be between 400 and 700 words". Hope you can understand. and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain is so, so the tag is not required. When replying, please leave me a Tb template. --Jagadhatri(২০১২) 09:15, 14 May 2012 (UTC) He's continuously threatening me saying "We'll see" and so one. He's humiliating me. PROTECTION FOR: List of awards and nominations received by Infinite[edit]

Hi, Can you give protection (at least, semi protection) to "List of awards and nominations received by Infinite" page, please? I wrote this page and I have already written all the references from trusted sources, but somebody keep edit it and remove the reference... or change the reference into untrusted sources and also destroy the layout... Please, protect this page... I add this additional page, redirect from Infinite (band)'s page (part: awards and nominations). Long time ago (before that part was protected), a lot of IP vandalism happen on that part too. I don't know how to request for protection... Thank you very much... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caspereeny (talkcontribs) 19:25, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: PROTECTION FOR: List of awards and nominations received by Infinite[edit]

But, this page actually is same with 'awards and nominations's part in Infinite (band)'s page. I just move the contains and arrange the lay out systematically. Previously, That 'awards and nomination's part was also protected due to extremely High IP vandalism. In fact that this page and that part are the same... So, this page will also has the same IP vandalism. Am I right? Caspereeny (talk) 20:03, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kuwaiti sanctions[edit]

Although the Olympic Organization for Kuwait is listed as participating in the 2012 Olympic article the actual organization and committee is under sanctions from 2010 and athletes will not be able to compete under the Kuwaiti flag, only as independent athletes under the Olympic flag. The official 2012 Olympic website does not list Kuwait as a participant and therefore, the Wiki article should be consistent with this fact. Please review these facts. I am not sure if or when they will be re-instated. Briefzehn — Preceding unsigned comment added by Julien Houle (talkcontribs) 19:14, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An interesting article for several reasons. There have been recent academic studies in English of his biography, poetry and so on. I believe there is an exhibition on right now about the "Eight Outlaws" group. Unfortunately when I was in Taipei for Wikimania I couldn't find anything written about him; but now there are many webpages in Chinese about the whole group of artists.

Protection on C3 Church Global[edit]

Thank you for temporarily protecting this page as per my request. However, the protection log says you have protected it for just 24 hours. What's the point of that? He/she'll just come back tomorrow (or this evening) and carry on as usual - chances are they may not have attempted to edit it in the short time it was protected and will never even see that it has been protected, either that or they will laugh at how ineffectual the action has been. Persistent vandalism??[edit]

You blocked the Olympic medal table page because of "persistent vandalism". I don't see any such "persistent" vandalism; just a bit, that you might expect in any such article. So I now can't edit that article, and neither can many of the other contributors who have put useful stuff in there. Please review this protection. 86.25.16.237 (talk) 11:01, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I just reviewed the complete list of edits to that article and I can't see anything that might be called vandalism. I found a couple of edits that you might call misguided, for example, putting an EU flag in the list alongside member countries, but that was all. Maybe I missed something? Anyway, thanks for your offer. If I set up an account called "BlueBarwick" could you set it so that I could edit the olympic articles? 86.25.16.237 (talk) 16:33, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Summer Olympics[edit]

At "2012 Summer Olympics", someone deleted the following information and reference, which seems pertinent to me. Could you kindly re-insert the information, if you find it relevant:

The cost of London 2012 has been studied by Oxford scholars Bent Flyvbjerg and Allison Stewart.[Sonderbro 1] They found that over the past 50 years the most costly Games have been London 2012 (USD14.8 billion), Barcelona 1992 (USD11.4 billion), and Montreal 1976 (USD6 billion). Beijing 2008 may have been more costly than London or not; the Chinese authorities have not released the data that would allow verification of this. Cost here includes only sports-related costs and thus does not include other costs, such as public spending on road, rail, or airport infrastructure, or private costs, such as hotel upgrades or other business investments incurred in preparation of the Games, which are typically substantial but which vary drastically from city to city and are difficult to compare consistently.

Flyvbjerg and Stewart further found that London 2012 has substantial cost overrun, 101 per cent in real terms as of June 2012. This is more than twice the overrun for previous Games over the past decade, which on average were 47 per cent over budget. Thus London 2012 is reversing a positive trend with the Games of falling cost overrun. However, cost overrun for London 2012 is below the historical average for Games over the past 50 years, which is 179 per cent in real terms, according to Flyvbjerg and Stewart.

A great and grand success....[edit]

Moment of Joy!
What brought me to Wikipedia was the lack of information in the article of Meera. In mid-April 2012, after spending nearly 3 and a half months, I planned to add to those article which are seldom edited by others. Those included the Nawabs of Bengal & Murshidabad, articles related to it and soap opera articles. Soap operas are ongoing so I have to edit them daily but the article on the Nawabs is a piece of history...and I took up the work alone. Later, in May some editors helped me to fix typos and grammatical errors, but soon withdrew back their help. But, by God's grace I finished with the work today on 4 August 2012 and would love to share this success with you! My condition was same as the flying man in the pic, trying to catch a several things at the same time before it's too late. I don't know whether he succeeds or not, bu I did succeed! However, I still have to add some references and summarize the plots of soap opera articles in the soap opera articles. If you want, then you can help. Thank you for all who helped me all these days...thank you again! --Tamravidhir(২০১২) 11:30, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion vs Encyclopedic[edit]

Greetings Deryck, I have a problem with your entry in the [2] section. It is very much an opinion piece with very little objectivity/encyclopedic knowledge. I cannot edit the page as it is semi-protected for some strange reason. Not being a Wikipedia fundi, but simply a web developer who strongly disagrees with your writing style, I do not have time to figure out how to overcome your 'editing block' on the page, but I strongly suggest you fix it, as young people starting out will get entirely the wrong impression of web typography for one. Particularly appalling is your use of grammar and the fact that there is at least one glaringly obvious spelling mistake. Don't know when this was written, but apart from the fact that you are misinformed, web typography has evolved radically recently and apart from the fact that your opinions on the subject are outdated, they are downright dangerously wrong. Regards. Galen777 (talk) 16:26, 6 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked some other editors for the same. Thank you ! Tamravidhir(২০১২) 12:48, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well then show me some sources that say his name is written in that form. Even the vi.wiki doesn't mention anything about it. Or is it just simply a translation of his Latin-alphabet name? ༆ (talk) 19:16, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Those sources are written in Chinese, so no surprise that the name is spelled in Chinese character. And "assume" doesn't mean that is clearly the native form of his name, those are just how his name is written in Chinese character. The every reason for Ngo Dinh Diem, which in the past there was a controversial discuss and the Chinese name was removed from the article. This kind of things very common happen in en.wiki, which many users try to make Vietnamese as Chinese. It's like people continue to ignore that Chu Nom and Han tu die out from Vietnamese language since the early 20th century. ༆ (talk) 19:54, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unilateral undiscussed move of bắt đầu từ nay[edit]

I'm impressed with your awareness of WP:BOLD but you should really use the WP:RM process to conduct controversial moves. Your unilateral move of bắt đầu từ nay following a move discussion that did not directly consider your title choice is a subversion of that process that devalues the input of most of the participating editors. —  AjaxSmack  00:54, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm. Deryck, to be honest I 99% agree with AjaxSmack, not so much because of the actual result (I have just added Category:Cantonese words and phrases and I was actually living in HK not long after the period and know the phrase first in Cantonese myself) but because of the context of the 1,700 undiscussed moves and edit locks that have effectively stripped the entire WP:VN article base of accents counter eg Talk:Cần Thơ/Archive 1 RM when (unlike Cantonese) accents are an important part of the (Portuguese-based) modern Vietnamese writing system. Cantonese/Russian/Georgian/Greek we romanize, but Portuguese/Vietnamese/Czech etc are already in Roman alphabet. Given this any undiscussed move that appears to "reward" a previous undiscussed-locked move that is part of these 1,700 moves is a bad signal. That's the context, but I expect you were not aware of the scale of the problem or that this article was part of it. It's up to you. You could restore this move - or given the somewhat unique nature of this as a HK article, perhaps instead you could find some other positive avenue to express that you don't approve the undiscussed accent-stripping and redirect-locking from the bulk of WP:VN articles. I do appreciate and thank you for your interest in the article and evident good faith approach. Cheers. In ictu oculi (talk) 01:44, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

London events[edit]

Hi Deryck,

I've put a geonotice request up for two upcoming events in London - I know you've more experience of geonotices than I do, so would it be possible for you to have a quick look at them and see if there's any more information needed before they can go live?

Many thanks, and I hope you can make it down from Cambridge for them - it'd be great to see you there! Andrew Gray (talk) 11:12, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. Eduwiki is quite specialised; I wonder if we've got all we're likely to get for that after ten days. I'll have a word with Daria. Andrew Gray (talk) 14:52, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(moved from Talk:Bat lau dung laai for archival purposes

Like this one for example if you reverted User Liang_Pengyuan's move, then a revert of this would be a good candidate. We shouldn't all really have to go through this rigmarole every time someone undiscussed-moves and locks a redirect should we?

As far as Bắt đầu từ nay the category Category:Vietnamese words and phrases needs moving from the Cantonese to the redirect so it shows up correctly, in italics, but in Vietnamese, on the Category listing. Then, for me at least, we're done. I can do this myself. I can't restore the example above. In ictu oculi (talk) 11:25, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not too worried about the category listing. Your suggestion sounds good, but I'd wait till a few others to weigh in before taking action.
Personally, I'm indifferent as to whether we keep the diacritics on Vietnamese page titles on Wikipedia. However, if we agree that bat lau dung laai is a solution to the situation of this article, another potential move would be Sam bo luongChing po leung. Deryck C. 13:29, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Deryck,
Does the above mean you will restore Bánh canh?
As to personally being indifferent ;) that's fine, I've noted that some, perhaps many, users of languages which are non-Latin-alphabet and are romanized in English (Greek, Chinese, Russian, Arabic) are indifferent-ish to whether Latin alphabet languages like Irish, Vietnamese, Czech, Spanish should use them. That in itself is fair enough, and not surprising. But I think recent discussion shows that the editors who created the Vietnam articles themselves are not indifferent, nor is there any consensus among the wider en.wp community which supports 100% French, Czech, Hawaiian, Icelandic spellings on en.wp as to why Vietnamese should be singled out as the only exception to the way en.wp treats all other Latin-alphabet languages. We don't have a romanization for Irish, Vietnamese, Spanish because these are already Roman alphabets.
Re Sâm bổ lượng, yes, I agree, 清補涼 is actually a Chinese drink, and that article really should be at Ching po leung not Sâm bổ lượng, especially since now that's another article which has been undiscussed-stripped-and-recently-locked so that it is currently at a nonsense title "Sam bo luong" which exists in no language. I wouldn't object if you were WP:Bold there too. If so then again the redirect Sâm bổ lượng would remain in Category:Vietnamese words and phrases as an italic entry. In ictu oculi (talk) 14:45, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not keen on moving Banh canh back to Bánh canh, probably to your surprise. This is because the version with diacritics stripped seems to have become common usage (see the external sources on Banh canh and Google search) in English-language Vietnamese cuisine cookbooks. Deryck C. 15:13, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That could be said of any Swedish or Czech article too, full-spelling will always be in the minority, but on en.wp European articles always go by the "best such sources", I see no reason to not apply that to one Roman alphabet language and not the others. In any case we'd all welcome an RM, if you restore the undiscussed move and edit lock on that article as you restored this one, then the User who did the undiscussed move and edit lock is welcome to do what the rest of us do and put in a RM and present sources and an argument. Let's have an RM, but let it be one done by due process and start from the article status quo. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:03, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

...are you talking about this article or banh canh? Deryck C. 16:08, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I mean bánh canh, since we're contrasting with articles in the category:Vietnamese words and phrases with no Cantonese element I thought? I simply taking the opportunity to ask an available admin who is paying welcome attention to the subject what would be a normal and reasonable request irrespective of Bắt đầu từ nay. The undiscussed and evidently controversial move to bánh canh was already undesirable, but the 30 June 2012 redirect lock invites admin remedy. I take the passing opportunity to request a fair fix. That's all. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:15, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I said before, I'm not personally keen on moving Banh canh back to Bánh canh, although another admin might want to do it. In general I'm not keen on preserving diacritics on enwp page titles if a version without them has entered common usage in English-language literature describing the concept. 2012 in UFC events talk page[edit]

Hello Deryck, I see you deleted 2012 in UFC events, I am just wondering if the talk page should have been deleted, there was a lot of discussion there as to the merits of the article and attempts to build (and not build) consensus. There are quite a few archives for that page in particular, I think the talk page should probably be restored (unless there is nothing really on it), and perhaps the article title left as a redirect. Thoughts? --kelapstick(bainuu) 23:45, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense, thanks. --kelapstick(bainuu) 00:38, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was using the 2012 in UFC events and Future UFC Events in 2012 pages regularly, and there did not appear to be any sort of notice banner on the top of either page that they were under threat of deletion, or else I would have certainly weighed in. Not all of those events had sub articles either still in the wake of the mass-deletion effort earlier in the year. I really think it's unfair to the people who actually used those pages not to make the fact that those pages were under threat of deletion with a banner. The new page replacing it is comparatively worthless and has far less information. Beansy (talk) 03:54, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realize the event pages for future announced UFC events had been restored. Deleting the omnibus articles makes a lot more sense now, so my bad. Beansy (talk) 20:33, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, can you make the pages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_on_FX:_Guillard_vs._Miller and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:UFC_on_Fox:_Evans_vs._Davis unprotected please ? Or fix the redirect to their old event pages. Thanks a lot ! SiMntjMMA (talk) 15:12, 23 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Past history of You didn't build that[edit]

Thanks for closing the AfD. I do have a question though. I see that the previous history of the redirect that was left from the article that was deleted and made into a redirect (unilaterally I might add) to the 2012 Obama campaign article has been deleted, per G6. I am wondering if that can be undeleted, and the history merged into the current history. I would like to give some WikiLove to that article creator, and cannot find a link to that editor. Thanks for the time it took to read this.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 01:27, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I not only second the above barnstar, but just quote you and your close in a current "slip-of-the-tongue negative spin campaign" AfD and used your thoughts to formulate my own.[3] Keep up the great work! -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:10, 25 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bat Ayin closure[edit]

I am a bit concerned at your closing statement that If many editors from various backgrounds all prefer to use the "notability" argument to trump over the "not news" argument, then it is the latter guideline that needs changing. WP:NOTNEWS, a part of WP:NOT is Wikipedia policy, not a guideline. WP:N is a guideline. When a policy and guideline come into conflict, the policy trumps the guideline, see WP:POLCON. Do you think that the article in question failed WP:NOTNEWS? Then it should be deleted, no matter how many people say "it's notable". nableezy - 13:42, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that, however I think that if people attempt to address a policy violation by citing a guideline then that argument has to be considered invalid. I dont see anybody in the AFD addressing the issue with failing WP:NOT except by saying that some guideline allows for the article. I didnt vote in the AFD, mostly because it was destined to end with "no consensus", but I think that the closure improperly gave weight to arguments that are, in my view, invalidated by the policy argument offered in the nomination. nableezy - 15:42, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thinking of starting a discussion at the talk pages for WP:EVENT and WP:NOT because they are functionally completely useless. They have no teeth whatsoever. If articles are going to be kept on the basis that an event is notable if it kills a child, if it was committed by a Palestinian against an Israeli, or if it and dozens of other events like it collectively might have had an effect on something, let's codify that. Create a subhead that explains that articles that advance opposition to the Palestinian cause are exempt from the rules that govern other articles. I'm only partly sarcastic. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 19:44, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok so we are just going to ignore the heavy favour to Keep consensus for this AfD because you lot think it is still not notable? Talk about irony.--BabbaQ (talk) 22:29, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think Deryck Chan had any other option based on the way the discussion went; I just think the keep !voters were flagrantly ignoring policy in pursuit of an agenda, and if that's always going to happen (because it does), we may as well say so. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 22:41, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Who is really having an agenda here? Really?. Well, Im just going to leave this self-destruction business alone. Not interested in self-gain moves. Bye.--BabbaQ (talk) 23:20, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
