Yeah, there is no problem with verifiability, and it's not at all a pressing issue. It's just something I know at least some reviewers will point out (myself included) - that whenever it is possible to identify the author of a source by name, the citation should ideally contain that information. decltype (talk) 06:38, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism

You blocked ConductDiscussion (talk · contribs) for persistent vandalism. Out of curiosity, can you tell me what in his actions constituted vandalism. It looked like he was simply moving pages to include the colon in their titles. The user was very rapidly moving pages from one bad title to another, i.e. page-move vandalism. I had to issue an immediate block to prevent further damage, those moves are tedious to fix. No problem. In fact, all the pages the user moved had titles that would result in a namespace collision if a colon was used. My bad. I decided I haven't done my share of NPP, so I poked through a couple pages, saw a page in Italian, and looked at the CSD, to see if it qualified.

Frankly, I was surprised to "coherent non-English material" under G1, but I shrugged, tagged it, and was just about to post a message at the CSD talk page to inquire. I see the answer is simple. re User:Naseah0b/Wakeb

Thank you for allowing this feedback. First I apologize if any of my actions caused any grief. This would be completely opposite of anything intended. The article at User:Naseah0b/Wakeb showed up in WP:AFC, misplaced. I moved the article here Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Wakeb and intended to delete the redirect using {{db-g6}}. I tried to label the move as a misplaced AFC submission. I have performed this type of action in the past, and would replicate it in the future unless you advise me that my actions are improper, or that there is a better way. I would like to add that I was specifically asked in the past to delete the redirect when I moved a misplaced AFC. Thanks for your attention to these and kind regards. Deletion

Dear sir, can you tell me about the deletion policy of Wikipedia. How is it decided if some article is to be kept or deleted. The reason I am asking this is that I have been told that one of the artile I have written can be deleted or redirected( I don´t know what is meant by redirection). The article I am talking about is Adil Khan. There is a time when Adil Khan won Dansefeber, but that was just the begining of his career and not the end. While in case of the other winners, the victory was the start and also the end. They were forgotten few months after their victory. Since being the first winner AdilKhan managed to become a star. He got offers for stage acting and has managed to establish himself as a notable young actor. He got nomination for Hedda Award at the age of 25, this is a big achievement because he is the youngest ever to get this nomination, usually people getting this nomination or winning are around 40 year old. Adil has been the first and the only ambassadoe for FRI. A lot could be read about him on the internet, being the role model for the youth etc. Adil got awarded by The Cancer Society, this awarded bring him in the line with names like Gerd-Liv Valla, Dagfinn Høybråten, Gro Harlem Brundtland and many other big Norwegian names. In 2008 Adil received Oslo City Artist Award at Oslo City Hall by Oslo Municipality for his contributions in Oslo's cultural life. IMPORTANT thing in this case is that Adil is not an ethnic Norwegian, He is an ethnic Pakistani, and Pakistanies in Norway has the lowest status but still adil managed to get this prominence in Norway.The biggst publisher of Norway is planning to come with a biography of Adil Khan which shows Adil Khan´s status in Norway. Beisde all this Adil is acting in theatre which could be checked in the table which is in the article about him, every year he has some project. You can check all these details by clicking on the referances ( I can attach lot more referances if needed). The referances are in Norwegian language( In Norway, we use Norwegian language, so it is logical to have referances in Norwegian) but it shouldn´t be difficult to copy the material in the referance and paste that to Google Translater. This would take few seconds to get the translation into English. Off course that won´t be a very good translation but still would give a fair idea abour Adil Khan. If you would like to search more about Adil, this would be a good idea to search for " Adil Thathaal" ( his previous name which he changed about one year back) because there won´t be so much material about him under the name adil khan I have been blamed for being Adil khan myself. If I would have adil Khan then I shouldn´t have problem to find "my" picture to upload. All I can say that Adil Khan is 27 and I am close to retiring age. All of my knowledge about adil Khan is based upon Norwegian Media. I have written another article about kjersti Alveberg, which is being tagged for "recitation", the time it was tagged, this article has just one referance. Hi Jogibaba. All article subjects on Wikipedia must be notable. For biographies, this normally means passing one or more of the criterions listed in the notability guideline for people. I have no problem reading the references, since I speak Norwegian fluently, but it's true that non-English references are perfectly acceptable for a foreign subject. Since Khan has received significant coverage in reliable, independent sources, he passes the basic criteria. Furthermore, he has received at least one significant award, and been nominated for another, he meets the additional criteria for biographies. Lastly, Khan meets the additional criteria for entertainers with significant roles in multiple notable stage productions. Consequently, I do not see how his notability can be put into question, so there should be no risk of deletion or redirection.

If you have any personal or professional relation to the subject, there may be a conflict of interest. In this case, you can still edit, but be very careful that your edits are written from a neutral point of view and verifiable by sources. In this case, it is best to seek feedback from others to ensure that this is the case - It may be difficult to remain neutral if you are close to the subject.

As for the Kjersti Alveberg article, it is slightly difficult to verify the prose section, because it lacks inline citations, so I would have to agree with the tagging. Let me know if you have further questions. decltype (talk) 15:05, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Basically, PROD or AfD is they way to go if it's not a web site or browser game, that is, "something that you see within your web browser [while browsing the web]". It is often proposed to expand criterion A7 to cover software in general, but it has always been rejected. Glad you liked the picture. Navbox problem on Barack Obama

Hello decltype. I was reading the above article and encountered a broken navbox on the very bottom of the page (link: Barack_Obama#footer). The template that is giving me trouble is Template:Democratic Party (United States), which is not transcluding for some odd reason. I used two edits in vain to try to fix it. Something even more bizarre is that it worked fine both times I tried to fix it in preview mode, before I hit save. I looked at the article in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, all with the same result displayed. Link FA is showing as a redlink as well. Any help would be appreciated. Yes, this is an interesting one. To put it simply, the article has simply too much templates. The article is exceeding the post-expand include size of templates (which is set to 2 MB). This is causing the server to fail to expand all the templates when the article is viewed in full... I am unsure whether the 2MB size can be increased somehow (sounds like a WP:VPT issue), otherwise the only solution is to remove some templates from the article :) decltype (talk) 17:24, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

However, we have a few established users who employ similar userpages (without them being tagged for deletion), and in principle everyone should be treated equally. Let the Right One In (film) page

Hi, decltype. Another person on wiki, Anna Lincoln, suggested I contacted you. I was a bit frustrated that the "Let the Right One In (film)" wiki page ruined the film for a friend of mine. That's because the first paragraph on wiki uses the word "vampire" twice. Surely the whole point of the film is that you don't know the female lead character is a vampire until later on. I deleted the word "vampire" twice in the first paragraph, but Anna Lincoln reinstated them. She is right to say that it is a vampire film. However, we wouldn't put a spoiler such as "Bruce Willis' character is really a ghost" in the first paragraph of the "Sixth Sense" page, would we? Could we take out the references to vampires in the first para and refer to this genre lower down the page if we need to? What do you think? Fester mower (talk) 10:10, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Fester mower! I'm sorry your friend got spoiled. While I do not think knowing Eli is a vampire is a particularly big spoiler - It should be relatively clear from the point where Eli pounces on Jocke in the underpass, and by the time poor Oskar has gathered up the courage to ask, you'll probably be saying "duh". However, I realize that spoilers are annoying, but Wikipedia is a reference work, and there is general consensus that spoilers more or less are to be expected when reading an article on a work of fiction. There is even a specific guideline that deals with spoilers. A relevant passage is:

It is not acceptable to delete information from an article because you think it spoils the plot. Such concerns must not interfere with (...) any other element of article quality (for example, Wikipedia:Lead section). Because the introduction of the article should summarize all the important points of the article (in recognition of the fact that many people won't bother reading all of it), I think it would be detrimental to the article to leave a very important plot point out of the lede. How to list on AfD

Earlier today you declined a speedy delete for the Greg Caton article, so I wanted to list it as an AfD. The instructions said I had to create an account to do that, so I did. Then I placed the template at the top of the page, but I get a message in red that says, "This template is being used in the wrong namespace. To nominate this talk page for deletion, go to Miscellany for deletion." However, the Miscellany category seems to be for material other than articles. What am I doing wrong?

Just wondering

Hi decltype, I just happen to check Hanna Mjåvatn´s profile here. She is being deleted, this is really strange that Christopher Flinder Pedersen who ended up with the third position in the first season of Dansefeber is still there, while Hanna Mjåvatn who was the winner of the second season, is being deleted. I am not suggesting anything, just wondering that shouldn´t this have been the other way round.

As for your second question, are you talking about a self-published source? In that case, see WP:SELFPUB for details on what kind of information is acceptable to source to a self-published reference. Yes, the user in question wanted the article deleted, but was unable to complete the deletion nomination by themselves. I simply went through the steps of listing the article and notifying the creator, and have otherwise no particular opinion about the article (except that it doesn't qualify for speedy deletion). Conceptual change

Hi Decltype, I just put an entry on "Conceptual change" online. You deleted this text for copyright infringement. However, the text was self-written and contained no material under copy-right. I am the coordinator of a group of scientists interested in conceptual change (http://www.earli.org/special_interest_groups/conceptual) and we held a competition for the best future wikipedia entry on this topic. The article I put online is the result of this competition. That's why it is so comprehensive. However, it was written specifically for Wikipedia and, in my oppinion, should not be deleted. You are right. I just discovered that. However, Tamer is the winner of our Wikipedia challenge. Since it took me several weeks to put the text on Wikipedia (it's my first entry), Tamer decided to provide the public with the information on his personal homepage in the meantime. He intended to take the article from his homepage after the text appeared on the Wikipedia. I cannot reach him today, but I wrote him and asked him to delete the text from his homepage asap. I will send you a message when that happened. I hope that you will then re-activate the Wikipedia entry. It was quite disappointing for me to have my first Wikipedia article deleted so quickly after it took me hours to put it online for Tamer. However, I understand that you acted in good faith.

Rather than deleting the text, it would be better if Amin made a note permitting reuse under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts) at his homepage. I have altered your user warning given to User:Mudkipzpwn. The template you used has five levels based on severity and you jumped directly to the highest level against a new user making their first edit. That appears to me to be contrary to guidelines and consensus procedure. Hi meco! First of all, your willingness to express your concern regarding one of my actions is much appreciated. It is true that I strive to uphold and abide by Wikipedia's policies and guidelines - more so than you might think. I am familiar with the four-level warning system which, as you correctly point out, has become recognized as the de facto correct procedure for dealing with vandals. However, the vandalism policy makes it clear that there is no requirement to go through all the four levels of warning - quite the contrary: Editors may, at their discretion, give a warning of a higher level.

The user in question had made two edits when I warned them - both times introducing deliberate factual errors to a biography of a living person. In this case, those edits were probably unlikely to cause any harm to the subject, but if they were to go undetected for more than a short period of time, would be detrimental to the credibility and integrity of Wikipedia. I'm sure I do not have to remind you of the real harm, and negative publicity caused by vandalism to Stoltenberg's article back in 2005.[2][3]

But I digress. The point is that those two edits made Mudkipzpwn (talk · contribs) fall into the category of an account which appeared to have been created solely for disruptive purposes. The blocking policy very clearly states that such accounts may be blocked without any warning whatsoever. The warning issued (an only warning) was in line with my intentions - I would have blocked the user indefinitely if she had made another disruptive edit - again, in accordance with the blocking policy. This is exactly what blocks are for - preventing damage and disruption to Wikipedia. If the user is seriously willing to reform and contribute constructively, they may appeal the block (an indefinite block does not mean an infinite block).

To conclude, I welcome scrutiny and criticism of my actions (administrative and otherwise) - I make a fair share of mistakes, but in this particular instance I feel that I have acted both in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the applicable policies. Fann Cup

decltype, It took me a little bit to figure out what I believe to be going on, and it seems to me that there is a lot of drama surrounding this page that I have an interest in. I happened by chance while searching Fann Cup on google to come across a deleted page on wikipedia about the tournament. I requested to Anthony Bradbury to have it restored so I could work on it - and it seems to have been restored and deleted again due to vandalism?, which I believe stems from a 'sockpuppet' case involving the original author?, to which according to my talk page, I was accused of being one of that authors 'sockpuppets' by one of that authors alleged 'sockpuppets' to which that investigation? was deleted by another editor? (I'm extremely new to wikipedia, and I am trying to figure out the right way to do things.) How can I take over this page? Do I just form a brand new page, even though the information contained in the original happens to be correct?

Anthony mentioned original research as oppose to references... I participated in the tournament so I don't know how more original I can get. I'm not sure how that differs from what I already suggested to him. EDIT: I just came to understand what he was saying... to find good third party references that are not involved and that my involvement doesn't qualify as a good reference. I just found this article posted on the National Lacrosse League (www.nll.com) website. (http://www.nll.com/article.php?id=4563) The NLL is not involved and they do not sponsor the event. Is this what he has in mind?

Yes, I deleted the page because it had no meaningful content at that point. Like Anthony said, for the article to remain in Wikipedia it needs to demonstrate that the tournament is notable, the easiest way to do this is to provide references to reliable sources independent of the subject that cover the tournament. I can restore the page to your user space for you to work on, but if said references can't be provided, the Cup is probably not quite notable enough for an article on Wikipedia, and there would be little point in restoring the page.
