Reference Desk Problem

I don't know if someone does it manually or if its done by a bot, however, the porblem lies here.

All Question before December 31 have been archived.

However this is not being done for Jan 1, 2007 on all reference desks, and now they are exploding in size.

Furthermore the new Entertainment desk has never been archived.

What I mean by archive is you know once archived {{is there on the start date of archive with the date}}. --Jones2 08:14, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

greetings and question

Hello Bibliomaniac15

I just received your greeting and your invitation to your talk page. I hope I am in the right place. I have some questions regarding an article I submitted:

1. In the French Wikipedia I recently created an article that is linked as a stub to another article. This article is in English. I have created the same article in the English Wikipedia. I wish to have the first article in the French Wikipedia deleted. How do I go about this?

2. In the aforementioned article, I submitted an image and attached the appropriate licensing message in the associated text field. However, the licensing message only appears to those who have logged in to Wikipedia. When someone is not logged in and clicks on the picture, a box appears that warns that, if the appropriate licensing is not declared within 7 days, the image will be deleted. How can I make the my appended licensing message appear to all users logged in or not? --3hierx 00:34, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Quick Question

I couldn't find anything quick on this...but I tend to enjoy editting medical articles (being that I'm in public health and medicine). I can't seem to understand where the code is for a "Contents Box" on the top of an article. If I write an article with sections, a contents box does not "appear". But most articles that I see have no code for their content box. Am I missing something? Thanks for the help in advance!! WiiAlbanyGirl 08:54, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for stepping in over at Talk:Chelsea Charms and Talk:Maxi Mounds. As you suggested, I left a message over at the user's talk page. However, the user just reverted my edits again. In the edit summary of one of the reverts, they said "Not going to bother with talk pages, they have been unfair, when I start them, someone deletes them, I am not going to waste time with a talk page".

I have never encountered this sort of response before. Several people have reverted this user's edits to my versions (those without the extra photos), so it seems there's a consensus among a few people that the extra photos (that the user wants) are not appropriate.

What would you recommend at this stage? Would a request for protection be appropriate? Please advise. It would be good experience for me to make a request for protection if it's appropriate (it'd be my first time), but I would rather not be hasty if there's a better approach. However I would like to have the chance to do it myself if it's right. I'm seeking your advice. Thanks for your help! Joie de Vivre 20:53, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Wikiproject Narnia Newsletter March 2007

WikiProject Narnia Newsletter
Issue 1 - 2nd March 2007 . Written by User:Sp3000 (talkcontribs)
WikiProject Narnia News
  • The WikiProject has been a little quiet lately. There are still quite a lot of Narnia stubs. It has been nearly three months since we last worked on Minor characters in The Chronicles of Narnia, which still looks very much like a draft page. That would be a nice article to get into the main namespace.
Good and Featured Articles
Other news
  • WikiProject Narnia's first newsletter issue has been published. You're looking at it right now!
Member News
To-do
  1. Add characters and bios to minor character draft page.
  2. Expand Narnia stubs.
  3. Link the first mention of a year in all Narnia-related articles to Narnian timeline.
  4. Rewrite character articles to use the Narnian character example article format.
  5. Adopt an article and improve it to the best of your ability.
  6. Wikify The Chronicles of Narnia article, especially the new lead and Narnian Universe sections
From the founder

I am proud to present our first issue of the WikiProject Narnia Newsletter. I decided that we needed to alert everybody who had expressed interest in the project that there is much work to be done! Please check in every once in a while at the project talk page, and tell other project members what you've been up to in terms of Narnia articles.

Article of the Month: Edmund Pevensie
  • Edmund Pevensie is a major character in The Chronicles of Narnia. He appears as a principal character in three of the seven books. Edmund was the second to enter Narnia, although he tried to betray his siblings to the White Witch. However, Edmund managed to help save Narnia by neutralizing the White Witch's most powerful weapon, her wand.
Collaboration of the Month: Shasta (Narnia)
  • Shasta is currently quite short and not much of his background has been mentioned. The article also lacks images – but make sure if you upload one, you include a FU rationale. Contribute!

Archiving the sandbox

Yeh, archive it so we dont lose great works or art when some vandle decides to mess up the page. Many of the orignal and mind blowing poems of the past are now lost and only exist in the edit history. Prehaps we could have sections for subject or run competitions or something. Its fallen into disrepair but we could start to organise it properly. What do ya think? Think outside the box 11:56, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm going to try and organise a way to maintain the sandbox poetry page. The POEM SPP: Proposal for Organising and Ensuring the Maintainence of the Sandbox Poetry Page is what I've come up with. Please have a look here. Thanks! Think outside the box 12:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Leet

Just a few thoughts: I think that the protection should remain indefinitely (because of the subject matter, as I'm sure you understand), I don't think the References need subdivision, and I think that once the cleanup is complete, we should get this on track to GA, then return it to its lost FA status. P.S. I sincerely appreciate the award :)
Cliff smith 04:25, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

I just noticed that Leet had been tagged an A-Class article per the assessment team for the release version of Wikipedia; the tag has been there for some time, so I don't know why I didn't notice it sooner. I will update the wikiproject banners accordingly. Cliff smith 18:51, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, actually I'll hold off on that since I'm not 100% on whether or not we should tag it an A. Cliff smith 22:02, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Help with Halo 2 FAC needed

Most concerns at the Halo 2 FAC page have been addressed, however the redesign of Bungie.net has led to almost every single Bungie.net link used in the article to go 404 on us. Basically, the article doesn't stand a chance of passing anymore unless we get the links as archives using the Template:Cite web archiveurl parems. TeckWiz's RFA

Hey Bibliomaniac15. Thanks for supporting my unsuccessful RFA this week. I hope to keep helping and improving Wikipedia alongside you. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@(Lets go Yankees!) 01:32, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

History of Poison

I know I havent spoken to you about this article for some time, but I was wondering if you, seeing that you have made several recent contributions to it, would be interested in helping out finish the article. Your help would be much appreciated, and if we could find sources, I believe we could truly complete the article. Please reply if you are interested, because I am interested in pushing this article to GA if possible. Thanks once aain for your contributions, —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 04:17, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

I am beggining to see the sense in that idea, but if it were to be done, I would like some assurance that it could be done neatly and without causing protest from anyone. Also, we need to decide whether we are going to divide it by time or place, ie.

either in a format wherin there is one article for history of poisons in middle east, one for history of poisons in europe etc. OR we could do it by time, wherein we make one article for poison in the middle ages or history of poison in the middle ages etc. Alternatively, we could simply work with the one article that we already have, considering the fact it is only something like 30KB - hardly overstuffed when many articles are 60KBs (take a look at some of the featured articles you see, some of them are massive compared to the history of poisons) Thanks for your devotion, —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 05:29, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

...Well, which one do you think is the best option? —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 06:07, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok then, by region it is. Now the only issue is sources of information...and when we can start. School begins for me on Monday or Tuesday, which will be wikis sunday or monday, so we should probably start sometime soon if possible. thanks, —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 21:58, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I've had a change of mind. I think we should work with one article for several reasons: 1. the article we have already isnt becoming overstuffed; its 30KB, nothing too large. 2. It is simply easier to work with one article rather than mess around with what will likely become half a dozen articles that may not even be very long at all. 3. So much work has been put into the one history of poisons article, it really is a great article, and I think that, because this pretty good article is already there, we should build upon that already standing basis, and expand it to make it a really very good article, if you see what I mean. 4. The splitting of all that content could be hard and time-wasting, time that could be better spent actually building upon the article we already have. Lastly, the merge will have to go under what may be a nasty process. It is like merging an article, we need to have a discussion 9which can sometimes become a debate) about whether we are going to do it - You and I are not the only people involved. So, per the arguements i have stated above, i really do believe that the article should stay in one piece, and that we should build upon that. As far as I am concerned, splitting the article because it is growing too large (which, really, I dont think it is;once you begin searching for content, you will realise theres only perhaps 20KB - 25KB max. left to write) is like splitting a building under construction into smaller buildings because it was growing too high. I hope you see my view, but if you dont, then please come up with some worthy points, other than it is growing to large. I dont want to have an arguement, because I cant do what we plan to do alone. Thanks, —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 22:34, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Great, so we have decided, and in answer to your question, I must be truthful. It was me, before I knew of the policy regarding the citing of wikipedia. Now, I am trying to be inline with that policy, and I do not cite the project anymore. I have, or someone has, remopved the wiki refs in the history of poison article, so that no longer presents a problem. Thanks, —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 22:49, 19 April 2007 (UTC) (PS, I should be able to begin sometime soon, perhaps... well, on the 20th sometime, I am not sure)
Tomorrow is the day. If you are still interested in completing history of poisons, tomorrow is the day I am able to really work on it. Thanks for your support. —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 04:07, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thats great. Thanks again, —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 05:11, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey! How does this sound? I just had this idea, but I dont know too much about it, and you seem to be a regular there - im talking the article improvement drive! We could nom the history of poisons for that, and if it gets selected, it would be helped to FA. We'd get lots of help, and it would almost certainly make FA - what do you think? I asked you first (I havent nomed it yet) because you seem to know about this article improvement drive thing and vote there often. Do you think its worth giving a go? Because, if you think about it, the History of Poisons is actually quite an important subject. Please, tell me what you think of this idea. —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 06:08, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Fantastic! I will! Thanks man! This could really work eh?! Great! —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 21:58, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Does only one of all those noms get selected, or do they choose the one with the most votes to be improved first or...how does it work? Do we even have a chance? —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 22:28, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
It almost does. What happens to the other nominations once the topscoring article is chosen? Do they get Blanked? —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 23:31, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh ok good. So that means that there is an almost 100% chance it will get selected right? Because it just stays there untilit does (assuming we can keep it under the overdue time that is). Oh yeah, and by the way, I've started on history of poison. i think our main problem is finding out about poison as a medicine. We might need to go to use books, or go to a library, because im having trouble using internet sources to find out about poisons as actual cures and medicines. —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 23:59, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh, Im sure it is hard. But surely History of Poisons would rank at least mid in WP:chemistry, or some other related Wikiproject... —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 02:00, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
What wikiproject do you think it should be listed under? I think itm may help if we find what wikiproject it belongs to. I was thinking either: Wikiproject History, Wikiprohject Chemistry or Wikiproject Chemicals. What do you think? —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 02:14, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok then. Good. —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 02:26, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
I'll put upm the template now. —ÅñôñÿMôús Dîššíd3nt 02:38, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

I think our edits overcrossed. I was reverting the edit immediately preceding yours (User:Qwerty815, s/he had changed a character name and added spaces). I did not mean to label your edit as vandalism and it was my fault for not double-checking the page after I left. Many apologies. janejellyroll 04:14, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedians' are the people who write and edit articles for Wikipedia. Some people might think that Wikipedist would be a more appropriate name, as an encyclopedist is someone who contributes to an encyclopedia. "Wikipedian", though, suggests being part of a group or community. So in this sense, Wikipedians are people who form The Wikipedia Community. A faction of users believe that Wikipedistian is the most appropriate even though it is almost impossible to say.

-- Wikipedia:Wikipedians

Note the "Some people ...", then [my edit] "a faction of ...". This is not an encyclopaedic article, it is humourous (or supposed to be). Reverting my edit was a little harsh.

The weasel words are there, one can ignore them. Thanks, Monkeyblue 03:41, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Help (?)

Thanks for your welcome message and other helpful info. I'm taking you up on your offer of "User Help" since it was unclear from the help pages how and where it is best to obtain feedback on technical issues, etiquitte, etc. First, if you don't mind, are you an administrator, or a devoted user/contributor, or just happened to read my post and send out a quick "hello"? Either way, I've got a few questions that I simply couldn't find answers to on the help pages - after a Lot of searching. Maybe you have answers or can point me to the answers. (BTW - this is a long message - I type somewhat fast AND I'm a "talker", so you may come to regret offering your assitance :).

Do the talk pages on Wikipedia work like a discussion board, where people keep a discussion open indefinitely? Is it appropriate for the originator of the subject/headline to add their follow-up comments within the same headline - and if so, how do I do that without having my comment be formatted as a new subject/headline. Do I post it on the talk page of the last commenter? If so, will it also show up on the talk page for the subject as well? As a side note, I found it difficult to figure out how to post a comment on a talk page, but then after much trial and error I finally realized that I can just click on the "+" button to add a comment to any page. Any reason why there are no actual words (like "add a comment", or just "comment") on that button as well? Just wondering... maybe there's some rationale I'm not aware of, but if other readers find the "+" as cryptic as I did, they might give up on posting comments/feedback.

And just to clarify, you mentioned, "if it's so bad, why don't you come over and fix it?" I'm assuming that the "you" was meant as the universal "you" and not as the accusatory "you", meaning me specifically. Either way, I've decided to interpret it as the former and will stick with that so my feelings won't be hurt :). At any rate, I have actually considered editing some of the pages dealing with my area of expertise, but found the editing process a little frustrating. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to this format. Some of the articles I read were generally accurate, but had a few errors that were very technical in nature. In some respects the might be considered "minor" but isn't the major/minor decision also subjective? It's hard to know how picky to be if wikipedia is supposed to be for a general audience. So now I'm thinking it's better that I don't edit things I'm really knowledgeable on, since my pickiness would probably drive others crazy, and would be beyond the scope of what the readers are looking for. Any thoughts?

I noticed that there is a "cleanup" effort with people assigned to specific areas. How does this work? For example, if you are cleaning up pages, don't you just have to keep returning to those pages to check up on them? Where do you possibly find the time for that, if you're responsible for many pages? If someone assigned me one page to keep track of as an "expert", I think I could handle that. But I could also tell you that I'm an expert in some field and you wouldn't know that was true. Either way, I rarely write anything (e.g. a submission to a scientific conference or journal) without feedback from others working in my specific area of research. So I wouldn't be comfortable being the only person in charge of cleanup for a page. Maybe this is related to my field or just my personal nature, as we/I tend to be very detail-oriented. That's probably true for many other fields as well. On the other hand, not everyone in my field is honest and accurate - I could write my own page on scientific fraud and many flaws in the scientific "peer review" process - but that's an entirely separate discussion. But for those of us who care about accuracy, it seems like even keeping one page "clean" over the long term could be a time-consuming task.

Finally, where should I look for your answer to my questions above? On my talk page? On your talk page?

Thanks!!

Beth Rogers 19:58, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Beth Rogers

Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Typo error

Ok, since i have no clue where to ask this question, i'll ask you (since you look important anyway). Whenever someone clicks the cite this article link on thetoolbar, the computer automatically produces several different examples of the article as it would appear properly cited. However, the MLA Style is a bit off. Here's the problem; In the Date section, if the Month is abbreviated, it should have a period after it, but it NEVER does. Any way to fix this error? Or if you can at least pass this info onto a higher authority, it would be greatly appreciated! Mace Windu 14:37, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
