I didn't tag it as unreferenced. It was already automatically tagged as unreferenced, which is why it was in Category:Articles automatically tagged as unreferenced. I merely adjusted the tag to {{refimprove}}. It states that there is a reference, however more would be desired. :) In general, I think, we shouldn't rely a single source alone, though I don't question your reference at all. People from the SLRD

Re Category:People from Squamish, the reason for my previous edit comment about that category needing deletion is not because as a hyphenated version of the name, vs the current (but contested, by me) version that uses a dash, but because classifying people by regional district is just wrong, wrong, wrong but dates back to Wiki-ancient times when someone thought RDs were a valid way to indicate where people were from and/or for other reasons geographic subdivisions of BC. The RM for the re-hyphenation of RD names is at Talk:Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (see Requested Move 2 there, that's a redirect to a "dashified" version of the page, but I refuse to type dashes when they're not where they should be; all sources - all - use a hyphen, as does the enabling legislation). I'll create Category:People from the Sea to Sky Country which will have the Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton Valley and Gates Valley people categories (whichever exists, I think Whistler's does only at this point).Skookum1 (talk) 02:18, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Ah. My goal wasn't to delete the category based on the edit summury - I am just working through Wikipedia:Database reports/Categories categorized in red-linked categories and removing the redlinked cats as I see them. :) Feel free to undo my edit if you want someone else to take a look at it - that page shouldn't come up again in my queue. Actually, hm, you know what? I forgot to include the subcats in the RM, "people from", "populated places in" etc...oh wait, no I'm confused (like often), that's for the article, not the categories, which will be given a speedy by User:Good Olfactory once the main RM on the articles is done. Indiscriminate removal of red-linked categories

I read in the section above that you are "just working through Wikipedia:Database reports/Categories categorized in red-linked categories and removing the redlinked cats as I see them". This you seem to be doing rather indiscriminately as a number of the categories which you are removing should in fact be created as they are established parts of existing hierarchies. Perhaps you should inquire at Wikipedia talk:Categorization before proceeding in this endeavour. __meco (talk) 10:20, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Um, I'm kind of cofused on this one. I removed two categories from the page, which you re-added, which you then removed again. Both of these cats were redlinked when I removed them. It seems you created them (2), and then you then put up for CSD. So, I'm curious, but what exactly was achieved here? Am I missing something? I thought that maybe you were mistaken, and left this message on my talk page before you realized your mistake, but it seems that this note was left afterwards. To clarify what happened (and yes, your are missing something), you removed relevant category redlinks when you should have fixed them. I added the categories back and then created categories for the redlinks. I then realized categories already existed, but under different names, so I fixed the categories on the article (as you should have done in the first place) and then CSD-deleted the redundant categories that I created in error. All of this effort would have been avoided if you did not remove the redlinks in the first place. If you have a dislike for redlinks then please fix them - do not remove them. Still missing something. The end result, as I see it, is that the two red-link categories I removed, should have been removed. Perhaps replacing them would have been nice, but one cannot expect to know every single category to know which one is the proper category. Wikipedia
No problem. The code for adding a picture would be [[File:Filename.JPG|thumb|Caption text]]. This will only work if the file is already uploaded to Wikipedia (or it's sister website, Commons). Note that the filename is case sensitive. For an example, If I add [[File:Wiki.png|thumb|Wikipedia]] to this page, I'll get the image to the right. If you haven't already, you might want to check out Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. It's got a lot of good info and more advanced examples, if you want to experiment a little bit. :) Hope that helps! Articles automatically tagged as unreferenced

Can I ask you to please not remove the auto= parameter from very short one-line stubs? There's really no point as the stub tag already conveys that the article is woefully incomplete, which would include referencing, it's redundant to have an unreferenced tag in addition to a stub tag, and totally unnecessary if there's only one sentence such as "<blank> is a village in <blank>" as there's nothing to cite anyway. I already updated the instructions at the category page. -- œ 22:46, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Not a problem. I was a bit unsure about tagging some articles. I verified the pages were still unreferenced, which is why I was removing the "auto=yes" part of the tag, but I wasn't sure how to keep the pages in the Category:All articles lacking sources without removing the tag entirely... But, if it's best these be passed over for now, I can do that. :) (The tags are a bit unsightly.) As Category:Articles automatically tagged as unreferenced has over 50k+ articles in it, I don't think that will be a big deal. I'll refocus a little bit on how I work through this cat. Ya we shouldn't even be worrying about doing anything with the articles in that category, it's meant to be more of a tracking category than maintenance. All the pages still remain in Category:All articles lacking sources whether "auto=yes" is removed or not, so for the short one-line stubs it's better to just leave the tag hidden, and it'll still be categorized as being unreferenced for those working on finding refs. -- œ 02:47, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

This is the second issue of the Wikipedia Ambassador Program Newsletter, with details about what's going on right now and where help is needed.



  • Userboxes and profiles - Add an ambassador userbox to your page, and make sure you've added your mentor profile!

Monopoly on Violence, edit

Hey dude, I reverted your deletion of the move-protect icon from monopoly on violence. I called it vandalism in the revert description, but that was more of a general term to denote that something that was an integral part of the page was deleted. Per my edit summary - the template was causing the page to show up in Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates. I assumed it was redudant with the {{pp-move-indef}} tag. Removing novels stub tags

Could you please refrain from removing stub tags with AWB, many of the ones you are removing are clearly stubs such as The Night of Kadar. Novels are an interesting case, because plot sections are exactly what the stub definition defines "very little meaningful content; may be little more than a dictionary definition," whereas to become a start it requires additional information thus providing " some meaningful content." Length simply isn't a good judge of novels articles, Sadads (talk) 10:40, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

groups of students in need of mentors

Hey Avicennasis. One of the classes working with the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, Jonathan Obar's Media and Telecommunication Policy, is working in small groups and would like us to assign a mentor to each group (rather than having students request the mentors they'd like, as other classes are doing).

I invite you to sign on as the mentor for one or more groups, especially if any of the topics catch your interest. To sign up, go to the course page and add yourself as "Mentor: you" in the section for that group. They students and/or professor or campus ambassadors should be cleaning things up soon to list all the usernames for each group and add a few more groups. Once you know who the students are in the group, you can leave them each a quick introduction to let them know you'll be mentoring their group.

Hello! Just a quick note to point out a couple of taggings that appear to have been in error, namely [1] and [2]. As you'll notice, the stub was categorized prior to the first tagging, which is why I reverted the first diff and have also reverted the second diff. Hello! Sorry about that. When considering whether a page is in a category, stubs are generally not accounted for that fact. We are looking for "content categories", that is, intended as part of the encyclopedia, to help readers find articles, based on features of the subjects of those articles. Stub categories do not fall under this, as they will now help a reader locate a certain page. Sorry, but a page is considered an orphan if less than 3 articles link to it. Currently, as you can see, no other articles link to it. I would help out in greater part but I'm not too familiar with the topic. I'd double-check that. The article was tagged as unreferenced, despite it having a reference. This update corrected the template, and by doing so also updated the maintenance categories on the page. :) The edit was minor, by not trivial (E.g., "such as only adding or removing some white space, moving a stub tag, converting some HTML to Unicode..." et cetera.) I appreciate your efforts to correct these templates. Having an old unref tag on an article that contains even one WP:Inline citation or WP:General reference is inappropriate. I think, though, that it would be better to also update the date at the same time, so that people know that it was recently determined that the references needed to be improved. I agree with the tag change - it seems very sloppy when a reader sees a tag saying an article has no references, then sees references at the bottom of the page. It makes us seem unprofessional. As for the date - the tag change is suggested by AutoWikiBroswer, and it's only programmed to adjust the tag, not the date. I assume there is a reason/consensus for that, however I have not looked into it. I suppose you could ask at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser if you wanted specifics there. :) Hope that helps. It seems good, I've removed the {{refimprove}} tag. Before that, it was tagged as {{unreferenced}}, which obviously isn't the case since there are references. The above article is not worthy of space on wikipedia. This presenter has a little tin pot job on a local radio station and i dont think this will benefit anybody who should read it, only to massage the already over inflated ego of a cheesy disc jockey who went out with the arc

Concur with removing living persons from bias categories

Avicennasis: I concur with the recent CFD on bias categories. I notice you removed many individuals from several of those categories. Another category that may be appropriate is Category:Antisemitism in the United States which has quite a few living persons in it, who are implicitly accused of being biased, simply by being mentioned in the Category, hence a BLP issue. It would only break an archive bot if you were the only person to post in a particular section. Maybe your sig doesn't break the archive bots ... you'd best ask their maintainers. But I'm pretty paranoid about this sort of thing ... hear are some examples where I've had to fix such breakage on relatively well-used talk pages. Graham87 03:10, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, the diffs you posted were both issues with User:MiszaBot II. I found an edit I made to Wikipedia talk:Edit filter where I was the last editor to post in a section, and User:MiszaBot II still archived it fine diff.

In general, abandoned accounts aren't usually blocked. This account hasn't edited since Feb 24, and it seems unlikely they will be back. (A good deal of accounts reported at WP:UAA are abandoned, and no further action is taken.) Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. Interest is high due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page, and many new and first-time copy editors have joined us for the drive. We have already achieved our target of reducing the overall backlog by 10%; however, we have more work to do with the 2009 backlog. We have almost eliminated May 2009 and we only have some 700 articles left from 2009. It is excellent progress, so let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009. Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Stubsensor

I was wondering if the stubsensor program could be used to do a custom project. There is a list of articles at Category:Articles automatically tagged as unreferenced. Virtually all these are marked as stubs, but some are more stubby than others. Is there a way the stubsensor could try to distinguish between the articles that are really microscopic (essentially one or two sentences of prose) and the ones that are longer? I'm thinking it would need to ignore infobox code, which can add a lot of bytes to the source. If the stubsensor isn't written to do that, I can write a script to do it, but I thought I would ask if you already have code that can do it. We just need some sort of rough division of the stubs in that category. — Carl (CBM · talk) 13:42, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I'm only able to get an article's total size. I could pull a report, say, for all articles in that cat that are less than 1000 bytes. It would find articles like Rubiales, for example. The total size I can also get, from the toolserver database. Unfortunately, some articles have a lot of text, and some have a lot of infoboxes, so the total size doesn't distinguish between them. White space edits

I assume you mean edits like this one? It's a basic part of AWB's general fixes, it's nothing I've special that I've setup. Someone recently mentioned it here - not sure if that discussion helps or not.
And my apologizes for not seeing the message sooner - Generally, when editing with AvicAWB, I have a window open on this account that refreshes automatically once a minute, so I can see and respond to any new comments. AWB & Ship Index

Regarding your AWB edit. Where there are a number od ships with a similar name, there is a "Ship Index" page - in category "Disambig-Class Ships articles". Editors are advised not to link to such pages, but to link to the individual ship articles. Is it then appropriate for you to add "dead end", advising editors to link to such pages? I believe I found the issue - AWB is supposed to skip all pages with the {{disambiguation}} tag. These articles, however, use the tag {{Species Latin name abbreviation disambiguation}}. I've changed my settings to skip these as well, and reverted the edits I mistakenly made to those pages. Again, sorry to be a bother, but thanks for the heads up. Please do not make controversial edits using AWB

From the AWB Rules of Use:

2. Don't do anything controversial with it. If there is a chance that the edits you are considering might be controversial, consider soliciting comment at the village pump or appropriate WikiProject before proceeding.

A few days ago you made this edit to John Burgee. I revert that edit, and today you restored it . An edit which has been reverted by another editor is, by definition, controversial, and therefore should not be done using AWB. Please do not revert again. I edit a great deal of articles - it's hard for me to keep track of them. Re-doing this edit was unintentional. IT's AWB's code that suggest the page is not a stub - and I tend to agree. The page is not a stub. Could it be longer? Of course; it could be a lot longer. However, per WP:STUB: A stub is an article containing only a few sentences of text... This article has 3 paragraphs, 2 lists and images. It's not a stub. If you want to draw attention to this article, I would suggest you follow the Wikipedia:Stub guideline and use a {{expand section}} tag or similar. Redirecting dashes from templates

Hi, I thought I'm not gonna make Bot request, because it takes time to get answer. Could you redirect templates from Category:Fb round templates, Category:Fb round templates UEFA and Category:Fb round templates England.  Done. For Category:Fb round templates, there are still a few hyphens I couldn't move to endashes, since the endash version already exist. I didn't check to see if both versions are the same, but if they are, one could simply redirect the hyphen verison to the endash. :) Hope that helps.
