Hi there. I'm not sure if "Adoption" is what I need, but I'm researching the options in Wikipedia for my company. We are a CAD/CAM software company. Recently it was discovered that our company (DP Technology/Esprit) is mentioned on a CAD/CAM page in Wikipedia. I'm interested in learning about how to use Wikipedia, possibly create a page for our company, and once/if that is complete I may be interested in expanding to include pages in several languages representing the countries where we are located.

Hey, I noticed you were offically officially up for adoption. You seem to be quite experienced, but i don't mind mentoring you.
One tip that i already have - since you are asking for it: try to improve your spelling. The best way to do that is to use Mozilla Firefox for surfing the web and for editing Wikipedia - it has a built-in spelling checker.

I didn't go deep into what happened there, but threatening with RFC, even in a friendly way as you did should be the very last resort. Think about it: if you want to settle things without RFC, why mention it at all?
Besides, i saw that that user is a suspected sock. I don't know whether it is true or not, but if he is a suspected sock, then he probably already gets enough attention from the admins.
Last thing, i saw that you wrote something very long on his talk page. Writing long passages is not a bad thing, but i'd invest that energy in the article space and point the guy at the relevant policy pages. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:41, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

I see that he only did one bad edit.
You don't have to be an admin to warn vandals. Just go to WP:WARN, pick the right warning and place it on his talk page (don't forget to sign). This is prone to mistakes, so be sure to preview the page before you place the warning.
You may always ask me for help with admin stuff, but since no-one can follow his talk page 24/7, you may use the page Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism to report persistent vandals. Some questions

Hey Amire, long time since we didnt talk right? Well, I have two questions.

1. How do you "graduate from adoption"?
2. Why different language versions of Wikipedia have different notability standards. For example, I translated an article about Paulinho Mocidade but it was deleted. However, in the Portuguese Wikipedia, the article only mentions that the article is a " stub about a singer. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it". 1. No specific rules for that. Be bold. You are welcome to remain my friend and ask me anything anytime.
2. Why different language versions of Wikipedia have different notability standards. - Every language Wikipedia has autonomy to decide on its own policies. The notability standards are essentially the same, although everyone everywhere argues about them all the time :)
In your case it was a speedy deletion, and the reason was WP:BIO - the person who deleted thought that he doesn't fit the notability criteria for people. Hundreds of articles about non-important people are created on Wikipedia every day, so it became a speedy deletion criterion.
If you think that this guy is notable, don't give up: you may try to re-create the article, but do your best to prove that he fits the policies at Wikipedia:Notability (music) and Wikipedia:Notability (people).
It is quite possible that Paulinho Mocidade is not notable for the Portuguese Wikipedia either, and no-one has noticed it yet :) --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 21:33, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Bracha Ettinger's photo

Amir - Many thanks for you kind proposition to help. I took the photo of Bracha Ettinger with the photo camera of Bracha Ettinger in Berlin last year. I gave the copyrights to Miss Ettinger. This signifies that she can do with this picture what she wants. She wanted me to put the photo in Wikipedia myself, since it was taken by me, and since she doesn't edit on Wikipedia. She wanted it to have the usual kind of copyright free. So I did my best to put it on properly, but I am not an expert. Please let me know if I need to write to her and ask her to step into the discussion and to declare that the copyrights are free for use under the Wikipedia conditions. This is not so helpful. That site says that the photo was taken by Sofie Van Loo, but it doesn't prove that you are Sofie Van Loo. Also, it only says that the content is copyrighted, but it doesn't say that it is under the GFDL license. Please read Wikipedia:Copyrights.
User:Marina T. uploaded the same images with similar and confusing explanation about the creator and the licensing, which makes me think that you may be related. Taw interwiki removals

Hi Amire80. I've reverted your interwiki removal on dewiki.

My rationale: It may be argued, whether to interwiki from enwiki Taw to de:Taw. But de:Taw has to interwiki to enwiki Taw, as the German article is about Hebrew Taw and the corresponding information can be found in enwiki Taw, despite the fact that the enwiki article covers a broader subject.

Consideration for Your Adoption Program

Hello Amire80,

Allow me to introduce myself. I am working on managing the online reputations of many notable companies including those that break industry and mainstream news (which are often cited by other reliable sources), and companies themselves that are well-noted within their respective industries.

I have been following the area of Social Media, including Wikipedia, and am very sensitized to the needs of following guidelines and providing maximum value to the community first and foremost.

Because there does not seem to be any provisions for agencies or reputation management entities in Wikipedia’s guidelines, I would like to be requested for adoption into your program because I want to make sure that I never run afoul of Wikipedia’s guidelines and counter to that of the passionate community that makes up Wikipedia.

I understand that many Wikipedians devote a significant amount of their time making this community and knowledgebase the best it can be, and I understand and respect the mission and vision of this site and the members that make up this community.

I feel that I have much to offer as a result of my affiliation with many notable companies who have rich and varied content that can potentially be contributed to Wikipedia’s various projects including but not limited to the main encyclopedia, but potentially images, audio, etc. I have an ear that is close to the most breaking and notable news provided by these companies soon after it has been formally published.

My intentions are to be a "matchmaker" of the most relevant and notable content that can add value to Wikipedia’s databases, including but not limited to areas requiring more sources, citations, and general insights. I feel that at least in the beginning, I will need assistance from a Wikipedia veteran especially due to the scope of possible areas of contributions that I could potentially provide.

It would be great to have new professional content and images on Wikipedia, as long as it is licensed accordingly under Free licenses, such as GFDL or Creative Commons. Note that works licensed for "non-commercial use" are usually not accepted on Wikipedia - this must a be a truly Free license. Read Wikipedia:Copyrights for more information. Feel free to ask me for explanations if you don't understand something.
A couple of technical notes:
  • You don't need to write <br /><br /> all the time. It's enough to just press "Enter" twice.

Looking at what you did (which, in your edit summary, you described as "refactored citation"), it looks to me as though you took the information from the citation and put it into the text of the Talk page. You put that link in as a footnote. Footnotes don't suit talk pages well. It would be enough to put it inline in your comment there on the talk page. Better yet, you could add it directly to the article, as i already did.

About Aranese

Hi! I'm pretty sorry you erased what I had written. Unfortunately I have been really busy on the Occitan Wikiccionari and haven't been around for ages! Well, I don't know what to say, it's so obvious that I don't know what to tell. First, Occitan is cooficial in the Val d'Aran, road and street signs are in Occitan there, so is the educational system, on the reverse Occitan has no real legal status in the French state and painstrikingly survives... About the policies I can say that the Occitan-Catalan/Catalan-Occitan dictionary (I'm one of the coautors) has been made because of the Val d'Aran and so has recently an Aranese (Occitan)-English-Aranese dictionary (Ryan Furness, from the University of Minnesota); until the moment there was no real bilingual dictionary aside from French-Occitan and Occitan-French. The promotion of Aranese has helped the current promotion of Occitan in Tolosa/Toulouse for instance and many projects are on the way. However those are facts and might not appear in any book so I don't know how it will please your appetite for quotations. I mean if you think the lack of quotation is such a problem, just leave it this way, I don't mind. I somewhat think it's not really fair, I don't know your knowledge of the Occitan culture, language or society but in my case I would never erase someone else's contribution (work, energy and time) unless I know very well and for sure it's wrong or not grounded. Do as you wish anyway, I have more pressing matters going on. In case you should erase something else I wrote, it would be safer to contact me on the Wikiccionari (Occitan Wiktionary) where I spend most of my time. My knowledge of Occitan culture: I spent a few days in Val d'Aran, and was pleasantly surprised the efforts to preserve the language. In Vielha i bought the big red-yellow C-O/O-C dictionary, which is very good and also Aitor Carrera's grammar. I study Catalan in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I didn't study Occitan formally, but knowing some Catalan, i can read Occitan with some help from the grammar and the dictionary.
I suppose that you refer to the part that said "Aranese is currently one of the strongest actors in the Occitan sphere". I was really sorry to delete that information, but all information in Wikipedia must have sources.
For example: you say that "The promotion of Aranese has helped the current promotion of Occitan in Tolosa/Toulouse". Do you have at least a newspaper article about that, in any language? Well, I wanted to know a bit more about you adn thanks about the information, I'm lucky enough to have some spare time now to read your page and know you answered here (and try to add a few more things. Well, as I told you before I'm the coauthor of the O-C-O, I'm Claudi Balaguer. You should know there are very few news coverage about non-statal culture in France and many of my friends have a real hard time trying to have some coverage of their events. So trying to find an article about it would take me a huge amount of time that I don't have and am not willing to spend. I mean that common sense should be enough, let's compare the current production of bilingual dictionaries or even the grammar you cited and you will see where's the main creative motor of the Occitan sphere. Moreover there's been recently the presentation of a new book written by Jusèp Loís Sans, former head of the Oficina de Foment dera Val d'Aran and currently head of some office of the Promotion of Occitan in Catalonia (at Barcelona). By the way thanks for saying the dictionary is very good! Some things are on their way but we should keep some kind of privacy so I can't talk about it openly, however if you take a look at the Avui next Saturday or rather Sunday you might get to have a better glimpse of what's going on there. I haven't read the local papers (la Dépêche and so on) to know how and when the influence of the Val d'Aran can be noticed or noticeable in Tolosa so I won't be helpful there. You could find some precious information in the paper la Setmana but they're not on the Internet yet (I don't know if they will appear there some day anyway!). As I told you before I won't spend lots of time to add such a small information when the problem with Occitan is much bigger. I'll try to talk more about it if you want to. The Val d'Aran (and even, but more than, the Valadas Occitanas) are our small piece of paradise if you ever happen to visit the other side of the Pyrenees you'll see clearly how things are and that my statement was just plainly obvious. Since you deleted it, I'll let you deal with it, my current ambitions and prospectives are the Wikiccionari and other languages Wiktionaries, the Occitan Wikibooks and if I can find some time, I'll try to create some lessons in the English Wikipedia about how to learn (Languedocian) Occitan.   • SlamDiego is right about Bakelite. There are articles with too much links, but Bakelite was mostly OK about this.

Procedure for Proposing New Entry for Notable Company?

Greetings, one of the companies I represent is notable within their respective industry. However they currently do not have a Wikipedia entry at this time. From what I understand, the process involves going to the appropriate wiki project page and putting in an introduction with full disclosure of affiliation and request adding the page (including a draft of the entire page) in the talk pages. At that time it would be up to the editors to determine whether they are notable enough to have a page. Is this the correct procedure? If so, would you please provide me with the correct location where I could instruct them to post this request? If not, please let me know of the correct procedure. "The adoption program" is really nothing special - it's just there to help you find an editor who volunteers to help you in any question. So naturally, posting questions on my talk page is the right way to go.
For instruction about creating a new article read Wikipedia:Your first article. Technically, you don't have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to create a new article. However, creating an article about a company with which you are affiliated is a conflict of interest (COI). It is not, by itself, a reason not to accept an article, but it does mean that you have to be especially meticulous about providing verifiable sources and asserting notability.
I suggest you read these pages on the matter:
I understand that this is a lot of reading, but that's the problem when you want to create an article about a company with which you are affiliated. If you don't abide by the rules in these pages, volunteers who check the contents of new pages are likely to tag your article as a candidate for speedy deletion (CSD).

Inserting "Citation needed" vs. deleting unreferenced statements right away and two other questions

I received two contrasting opinions on this subject:

  • User SlamDiego suggested I should write "Citation needed" when seeing another user claims a fact without referencing it (see User talk:Nahraana and my subsequent action 13:30, 27 January 2008 Nahraana on article Teddy bear.
  • On the other hand, user Allstarecho suggests unreferenced statements be promptly deleted (see 19:54, 27 January 2008 Allstarecho also on Teddy Bear).

Both users seem quite experienced. I would naturally tend to follow SlamDiego's suggestion since this seems more constructive and (as I am a beginner user, who is likely to make more mistakes) is "safer". I would like a third opinion. What do you think Amir?

Question 2: what do I write to make a link to the history page of an article? and to an older version of an article?

Question 3: it says in the guidelines that user pages can contain personal info but shouldn't become personal homepages or blogs. I added some more info in my page and think it is OK. Could you have a quick look an confirm this? Nahraana (talk) 16:53, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

"Citation needed" should be used on information which seems reasonable, but needs a citation.
If information seems really preposterous to you, be bold and remove immediately. (The leader of Wikipedia Jimbo Wales strongly supports this opinion, and i agree.) It is especially important in articles about living people; see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons for an explanation.
If you have doubts, ask at the article's talk page.
I often try to look for a source myself; if i can't find, i put "citation needed"; if no-one adds it within reasonable time, i remove the information and say at the talk page what have i removed and ask other contributors to put the information if they have sources. See for example what i did at Aranese language (check the history and the talk page.)
Answer 2: There is no nice "wiki" way to it. Just go to the page that you need, copy the the URL from the address and put it in square brackets. For example, this is where you added your message: the diff with your latest message.

Ok, please go ahead and restore this information. Obviously "double-vav" and vav with a geresh are sometimes used, but according to Academy of the Hebrew Language's standards this is "rogue" usage. Absurd as it may seem, there is no standardized way to distinguish in Hebrew between [v] and [w]. I think this is valuable information, especially if people are seeking help in "correct", i.e. standard transliteration into Hebrew (check out e.g. this, page 5, transliteration of Arabic letter waw - و - and other sources of the Academy of the Hebrew Language). Dating the {{fact}} template. Dead links.

Hi Amir,

I have two questions:

  • The fact template is dated by writing: {{Fact|date=January 2008}}. SmackBot dated a fact template today in Philo-Semitism (first paragraph) but the date does not show. How come? Is that a bug?
  • Should I delete dead internal links (red links to yet-non-existing wikipedia articles) when I encounter them? I thought about this: although they don't look so nice they may encourage editors to click these links and write new stubs. What do you think?

The dates in the fact template are not supposed to be seen in the text of the article. They insert the article into appropriate categories. Look at the bottom of the page and you'll see that the page is now in "Articles with unsourced statements since December 2007".
You are right about red links - they often encourage readers to write new articles, so you don't have to remove them. You should only remove them, if you have a good reason to think that there's no chance that this article will ever be written. For example, if a person's name is the link, then remove the link only if you are absolutely sure that the person is totally non-notable and will never have an article. You can also remove red link if it's really ridiculous like this one. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:34, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
