During this year we have seen huge a growth in the number of editors contributing to the project and a massive increase in the number of articles linked to the project. We have managed to raise the quality of significant numbers of articles. But with this ever changing beast that is wikipedia there is no room of complacency and there is a mountain of editing work still to do. The member project space has developed and the latest developments are more Outreach options for your use and the establishment of the first "Task Force" for special interest areas within the overall purview of the project.
There are now well over 7000 articles taged as part of the project!

A new policy proposal has been started and this is to be seen at Wikipedia:Speedy deletion criterion for unsourced articles, please take a look at these and comment. This is a vital subject and all editors should consider the implications. These are NOT active yet, but could have wide reaching consequences. Please contribute your views.

I am led to believe light novels are our of scope - I have to admit they are unknown to me but, graphic novels, manga are out and I am told light novels are rather similar to elements of these. Novels newsletter : Issue IX - February 2007[edit]
The month has been a quiet one for the project with little obvious interaction, although editors have been very busy working on article improvement, recategorisation, and assessments. The Short story task force have been slowly adding staff and working mostly in the early stages to tag existing "short story" and "short story collection" articles.

Auto list news
NovelsInCompleteInfobox worklist has been worked through, mainly due to the efforts of Jask99; it has now only the most difficult to complete. Please give it a look and if you can complete an infobox, please do. We should soon get a rerun with the latest article additions generated courtesy of user Eagle.
These two lists have been culled from the main Wikipedia but others thought they would serve as a good worklist for the project to use as article hitlist, so they are here for your pleasure.

Newsletter challenge
Last months Fictional locations challenge was met by the user Loom91 (talk·contribs) with a modest start that rapidly got expanded a short stub that survived tagging for deletion and then expanding by a number of editors to something quite useful. Along the way it got (correctly!) renamed to Fictional location.
The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This month's article is P.D. James - A Taste for Death.

The Novels WikiProject Newsletter: Issue X - March 2007[edit]
We are on the cusp of having 9000 novel and other narrative prose articles tagged as part of the project. With this volume of articles, we need all the editorial help we can get.

The project has currently 214 members, 8 joined & 1 leavers since the last newsletter at the start of February 2007
Other news
The Assessment department has managed to assess (in some form) nearly all the main articles. The emphasis will now change to identifying needed article improvement, however keeping a watch on newly tagged articles with a view to properly assess those.
A new Peer review department has kicked off with one of my early articles as a starting point. Please do give it a look, start reviewing and suggest other articles that you believe could benefit from another pair of eyes.
Currently stalled - if anyone has the means to help out here with re-generation of these list - please do!
Current debates
The End of Fair Use? is notification of a serious debate going on across WikiPedia.
Another possible problem hasn't really got going as a debate but maybe should have. It highlights a need to put in content to articles that asserts "notability" and gives proper referencing to articles.
Volunteers needed - if any members feel able to take on project tasks such as leading Task Forces, editing this Newsletter, monitoring and maintaining the Announcements template, heading up Outreach activity, managing Collaboration or Assessment activity or anything else you believe needs special attention, please let us know.

Department & Task Force news
We now have five administration Departments which now include an Automation Department which is the home for support and administration of automated update activity. Anyone with such experience and can get involved look in here for work ideas and to make suggestions.
The three task forces are gradually growing but need support to succeed. Also if you have further such ideas for co-operation - also let us know.

This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. Someone has pointed out that the 22nd of April is the 300th birthday of Henry Fielding so it behoves us to honour his memory with a suitable effort here!
Our article count has leapt again rising to over 11500. Do get stuck in and assist in improving this rising tide of narrative prose related material. A statistical count of articles can be found here.
We have a new project page for Article Style Guidelines which has had a few editors work on it. Currently based on our existing article template it needs some extra eyes to hone any rough edges.

Of crucial importance to our progress and the way we edit is a debate on the Main Article Template which is strongly recommended for every editor who can, getting involved with. We have worked with the existing template for well over a year now and this debate proposes making radical changes.

The Brothers Karamazov (nom.) was demoted from Featured Article status for concerns over sources, structure, and coverage/focus.
The 2007 Wikipedia Selection for schools, targeted around the UK National Curriculum, included 39 novels. Volunteers at Wikipedia had suggested articles considered valuable and relevant for inclusion. See here and the WP Signpost news.

Shantaram to marry PrincessGregory David Roberts, author of Shantaram, a reformed Australian convicted armed robber has just announced his engagement to Princess Francoise Sturdza of Switzerland, who he plans to marry soon. His life has changed dramatically for the best after the release of his first novel four years ago, which depicted his life in India after escaping from prison. A movie based on his novel is planned for production later this year, starring Johnny Depp in the lead role. [1]
Shannara series purchased by Warner Bros
The film rights to The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks have been picked up by Warner Bros. They plan to first develop The Elfstones of Shannara, the second book in the series as the opening movie and writers are now being sought for the adaptation. The first book The Sword of Shannara, was published in 1977 and was the first fantasy book to reach, and then top, the New York Times Best Seller list.

The demand for fair use rationales for book covers has generated a discussion among wikipedians and also WP:NOVELS members. See the discussion here it has some potentially very important ideas to consider and possibly contribute to.

What is a novel? What are the elements that must be found in any piece of writing for it to be considered a novel? I think it fair to say that traditional definitions of the word “novel” work along these lines: A novel is a fictitious prose story of book length. In my view, a novel has six basic elements: 1) It must have a society of characters; 2) They must be undergoing transformations; 3) And those must be in the course of a sustained prose narrative; 4) The sustained prose narrative must be impelled by a plot; 5) And it must be unified by clearly discernible central themes; 6) And to the extent possible, it must be universalised by a complex architecture of allegorical and symbolical sub-strata. If I write those six basic elements into a single definition, I come up with this: A novel is a society of characters, undergoing transformations, in the course of a sustained prose narrative, which is impelled by a plot, unified by clearly discernible central themes, and universalised by a complex architecture of allegorical and symbolical sub-strata.

Our tagged articles now number over 14,000 and more are being added every day. In reality the article count for our project scope is likely to be much higher so the more who can get involved and assist the process of improving the quality of the articles the better.

I think you've done an incredible job so far with the Shin Angyo Onshi article, and I would love to help. I've been tweaking it here and there, and was hoping to expand the article a bit. I'm thinking that there is enough info on the main characters (Munsu, Sando, Bang Ja) for them to have their own page. Maybe there can be a format similar to the Bleach and Naruto characters (character outline, synopsis, weapons, etc). Also, do you think there could be a heading about the omakes? The omakes are almost like a part of the story themselves! :)
I've been slowly adding the Korean translations to the names. Since this is my first translation I've done I'm slow, lol. I'll also work on citing some of the things you mentioned. :)

A fairly quiet month in November. However we had a fairly successful COTM with the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland article with 85 modifications made. The success of which I will leave to your assessment.

Task force news
The Fantasy task force has got off to a really good start with now 13 members. Do cooperate one with another and make it really work for us.
If any group of editors sees a need for a new "task force" then let us know. Also we can link a WikiProject in as a task force (as Australian task force), this has the benefit of reducing the level of effort dissipation and also advertising interest areas in more than one location.
Some discussion is going on about the "Activation of Members". To which end a "clearing house" of jobs and volunteers is being trialled at Novels Job Centre. Have a look and see what you think.

During 2007 we have seen membership grow from just below 200 to just below 300. Also our tagged article count now runs at about 16,000 considerably up on this time last year. It highlights the message given from last year that there is much work to do improving and caring for this corner of our "wikiworld". Sadly our Auto-list editor moved on and we sorely need an able replacement. On a more positive note we have seen the establishment of task forces, style guidelines and peer review. Our latest outreach initiative is the Novels Job Centre.

Hello, I am a school librarian in my ‘real life’ and so I use Wikipedia a lot with students ageing from twelve to eighteen. While helping students research various topics I’ve run across many holes in Wikipedia that need to be filled so I created an account and began editing pieces. I’m taking a break from teaching for a few years while I raise two boys of my own, so I created a personal account a couple months ago and am focusing on editing articles on literature as well as the upper Midwest area of the United States and theatre. I enjoy all forms of literature but most often read fantasy and mystery. I am an occasional editor with no intent to run for any post; instead, I look at one or two articles a month that need help and do what I can. My public library system allows home access to a number of academic and professional databases, which is where I find most of my sources. Finally, I am currently working on filling in some of the red links on the Newbery Medal page and then hope to turn the stubs into full articles. Anyone want to help? I'd be interested in starting a Award Winners workgroup. I am also active in the WikiProject Biography and in the Children and Young Adult Literature WikiProject. They all have areas of focus that compliment each other and my interests.
I was approached after the last newsletter by somebody who wanted to reach out to some of the readers, so here we are – Alan16(talk).
Hi all, the Sword of Truth Task Force is restarting to clean up the articles related to Terry Goodkind's books and there adaptations. With the new TV series, The Legend of the Seeker, the books and the TV show are getting more critical attention, which means more real world material to document this great series of book. I would love to have other's help, as I have only just recently joined to find no other active members. The other members, as listed, have mostly left Wikipedia or removed themselves from the task force. If you are interested I would love to talk at the forum: Wikipedia:WikiProject Sword of Truth/General Forum, or send me a message. Hope to talk to some of you soon, SADADS (talk).

Recently a new worklist had been created and quietly arrived, the Cleanup listing which gives a fairly comprehensive hit list of "novels" related articles that have been tagged for something or other.
Since then a new Article alerts listing has also been added of more topic and "urgent" items worthy of our attention.
17 positions remain unfilled at the Job Centre. Members who are active project contributors are encouraged to apply even if they can only do a position for a short time.

On November 1, a fact about the novel Madol Doova appeared in the DYK? section on Wikipedia's main page.
On November 22, a fact about the book Acquainted with the Night appeared on Wikipedia's main page in the Did You Know? section.
On December 1, a fact about the book Blown for Good appeared on Wikipedia's main page in the DYK? section.
On December 11, a fact about the novel Kajsa Kavat by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren appeared on Wikipedia's main page in the Did You Know? section.

Task force and related news
A new Military fiction task force has been recently created by SADADS. The group focuses on military fiction that is not primarily associated with fantasy and science-fiction, and is calling for users to help support the integration of the Military fiction task force, including template development, tagging, and assesment. Anyone interested in joining can sign up here.
Hello all. As you're probably aware this is the first newsletter since August. I had hoped that although I was unable to write one for the ensuing months, somebody would have picked it up, but that was sadly not to be. However I am back, and that should hopefully mean a new newsletter every month, like it used to be. There has been a lot of work done on novel related articles in my absence, however the project does not appeared to have progressed very much, which I'm sure you would all agree, is a shame as it holds such promise for Wikipedia. But with the new year approaching I am hoping that things will turn around, so I urge you all to get involved with the project in whatever way you can, and help it achieve its full potential. All that's left for me now is to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

There have been no novels nominated at the Collaboration department for the past few months, so this months collaboration will remain: The Sound and the Fury.
