Juan Echeverri (born November the 22nd of 1978 in Bogotá, Colombia) is a Colombian artist known for his work focused in self-portraits and the reflection on self-image and stereotypes.[1][2][3].

Life and career[edit]

Echeverri studied Visual Arts in the Universidad Javeriana, were he graduated in 2002. Around 1995, he sporadically started taking 4x5 cm pictures for his personal diaries and, once this became a daily habit, the compendium of the pictures became a long-term project titled Miss Fotojapón [4]. In 2003, Miss Fotojapón earned Echeverri a solo show in the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art[5][6].In 2010, a fraction of this piece was acquired by the Museum of the Bank of the Republic, the leading institution in contemporary art of the country, for its permanent exhibition Ires y venires[7][8]. In 2022, Miss Fotojapón had more than 8000 pictures, was also exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery of London as part of the "From Selfie to Self-Expression" exhibition of 2017 [9][10][11], and was included in the 500 Self-Portraits book of 2018 published by Phaidon [12][13] and in the Younger than Jesus Directory, also published by Phaidon and the New Museum in 2009 [14].

Parallel to Miss Fotojapón, Echeverri has created some short series that also deal with the construction of the persona and the stereotype-based perception of the "other" [15]. Some of these series, like Fantasía de Macho maduro (2001), merengue glacé (2007), SUPERSONAS (2011), futuroSEXtraños (2016) y MUERTOS VIVIENTES (2019), have been displayed in venues as Bogotá's Colombian National Museum in 2021 [16][17], Ireland's Biennial of Contemporary Art of 2018 [18], and the Rescontres de la Photographie of Arles in 2017 [19][20].
