Endnotes and Citations

Overview

When writing an article you may want both endnotes and citations. Endnotes can provide a means to elaborate on a topic without interrupting the main flow of the article. Citations reference the published work of another which provides the basis for your claim.

Endnotes (or footnotes) are discouraged by the Chicago manual of style (?) on this basis that if it is worth including you ought include it in the main body of the article.

For either and endnote or citation there there is always a pair of strings that make up the endnote or citation: the in-article string; and the end-of-article string.

In wikipedia or wikimedia there are several ways of implementing endnotes and citations. We'll settle on one implementation for endnotes and another implementation for citations. Endnotes use the <ref> code. Citations use {{harv}} for the in-article string. Citations use the {{Cite *}} templates, such as {{Cite book}}, {{Cite web}}, {{Cite journal}}, or {{Cite news}} for the end-of-article string.

We use the {{Cite *}} templates rather than {{Citation}} as specialized templates (court cases, comic books, video games, etc.) cannot very easily be implemented using {{Citation}}. Additionally, the WikiEditor extension in wikipidia has a "Cite" menu that spits out {{Cite *}} templates.
