The Andalas University Faculty of Law (Indonesian: Fakultas Hukum Universitas Andalas) is the law school of Andalas University in Padang, Indonesia. Established in 1951, it is one of the oldest institution of legal education in Indonesia, and the only public law school in the province of West Sumatra. Andalas Law is renowned for its constitutional law and adat law program, while also offering specializations in criminal, civil, and administrative law. While there is no definitive ranking of Indonesian law schools, Andalas Law is widely considered as one of the premier institution. Its graduates including Constitutional Court judge Saldi Isra, Supreme Court judge Takdir Rahmadi, and Attorney General Basrief Arief.

History[edit]

The school originated from Pancasila College of Law (Perguruan Tinggi Hukum Pancasila), a private law school which was founded on August 1951 under the management of Sriwijaya Foundation (Yayasan Pancasila). On December 1955, it became a public school named the School of Law and Social Sciences (Fakultas Hukum dan Pengetahuan Masyarakat), following a government decision. Less than a year later, it became a founding faculty of the newly-established Andalas University in Padang. Abu Bakar Djaar, a jurist and former Mayor of Padang, served as its inaugural dean.

The school was closed throughout the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia turmoil, which sees some of its professors and students joining the movement. It reopened shortly after the conflict ended.
