Ad Orientem[edit]

If, as was once most common, the priest offers Mass while facing ad apsidem (towards the apse), ad orientem (towards the east) if the apse is at the east end of the church, he shows them to the people, who are behind him, by elevating them above his head.

It sounds like ad apsidem is distinct from ad orientem: actually ad orientem is not just toward the east, but toward the liturgical east, which is (in modern churches) toward the apse; this should be made clearer. I read this recently (I think in a pamphlet by Michael Davies), but can't come up with a citation at the moment. JKeck (talk) 22:39, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use of the term 'Universal Church'[edit]

In my reworded introduction, I have used the term Universal Church to refer to all of the various churches as a single collective whole, of which the Catholic Church is simply one, albeit a very large one. I have found this term useful and non-offensive when seeking to compare the Catholic Church rites, etc, to the Orthodox, Anglican, etc. Oatley2112 (talk) 12:39, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's all well and good; but the word "Catholic" should appear in there somewhere. Slac speak up! 01:37, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
