Julian of Norwich

First paragraph

I am a bit confused by that "Anyone in heaven is a saint, so..." at the end of the first paragraph. What does this mean? Why end a sentence with ...?

That author had probably intended the definition of saint described at Saint#Other Protestantism, specifically that "the word saint is used more generally to refer to anyone who is a Christian. This is similar in usage to Paul's numerous references in the New Testament of the Bible". Regarding the ellipsis, they were intending the reader to question the usefulness and completeness of the current list. Years listed

What does the listed year represent? The year of the saint's birth? The year of the saint's death? The year of the saint's canonization? The article should make this clear. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 22:35, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Agreed. This list is very unclear. A quick perusal of the early edit history shows it started off as a table, then was proposed for deletion as a duplicate, then was a redirect for some time to List of Saints, then inexplicably got re-started as a weird table and now this very odd list... Needs someone with more time to figure out if this is even worth keeping. Sweet kate (talk) 18:34, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

There are several years omitted and sometimes whole centuries. St John of the Cross was canonised in 1726 (ref Wikipeia article) but there are no listings here between 1645 and 1819! Also, Theresa of Avila was canonised in 1622 but there are no listings between 1426 and 1630. New saints

There is something wrong with this list, as it is full of people who have been proposed for sainthood at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, while it does not include actual saints (who are present at the list of canonizations). Michael Judge is NOT a saint and there's zero reason why he should be on this list under the year 2001. He's a priest who died on September 11, 2001. He is not even in the process of being made a saint either. I am removing him from the list Cathy9999 (talk) 14:30, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

There's a number of people whose bio page mentions nothing about being a saint, some of the ones I looked at: Pierina Gilli, Francois Michélin, Fabiola Fernanda Maria de Mora Aragon, Nirmala Joshi. I'm guessing it's this page rather than their bios that is inacurrate but I don't know enough to edit it. - 95.44.48.43 (talk) 14:08, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I'm finding the same thing: people who lead good lives but in respect of whom there is zero evidence of any canonisation process. To be referred to on some amateur site as "a martyr" is hardly sufficient to qualify someone as an official saint.

The list needs a MAJOR clean up. It seems to be generally sorted by their year of death (apart from some glaring inconsistencies), but that's hardly of much use to the general reader. It needs to be in alphabetical order. -- Jack of Oz ^{[pleasantries]} 08:22, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

1) Above, on this talk page & on the article page, I added the following, hoping it will prevent on-going additons of "non-saints".

The steps to canonization that the candidates have to go through to become a saint:

2) Starting with the 2015 section title, I will add a comment line <!-- list saints and cite with proof of canonization --> immediatly under the section title. Will go backwards several years with this comment.

3) For the list article page, I added info from Category:Roman Catholic saints page.

Cleanup - Step One

Going backwards chronologically through this list, I have added new entries (from List of canonizations article). In addition I removed entries for people in the sainthood process, but not yet canonized. Lastly, I created a Martyrs section & moved a number of entries there. There is more cleanup remaining. Cleanup - Proposal

I think it would be worthwhile to convert this list into a table or series of tables, one for general saints that can be sorted alphabetically, by birth date, date of death, canonization date, or by the person who canonized him/her, and another table for martyrs that can be sorted similarly. This would not only allow for a much cleaner and functional view of this list, but would also make it far more practical to merge this article with List of saints by pope. Readers will also be able to sort the list to their liking. Any comments, objections, or feedback on this cleanup effort are much appreciated. Magicmq (talk) 01:19, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Cleanup of Article

Since no one is doing it, I'm going to cleanup this article, organizing all the Catholic saints in the article so far into a table that can be sorted by birth date, date of death, canonization date (if applicable), and other notes. Hi, if we are adding deets like these to the article, can we please include reliable secondary sources that support the assertions you're making? Otherwise they're all useless. Saint Patrick??

Saint Patrick, despite his status as patron saint of Ireland, was never canonized by the RC Church. Is it appropriate to included him here? And for that matter, any other "saints" that are not recognized as such by the Church?Jonathan f1 (talk) 21:45, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

Tabitha/Dorcas

This woman is listed on WP as a Saint using calanders of saints as references, but she is not listed here nor supposedly in the Roman Martyrology. What is the official way to verify whether someone is considered a saint in catholicism? Sephiroth storm (talk) 04:18, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

Normally, the official way is indeed to be listed in the Martyrologium. I can see that St. Tabitha has not been on the General Roman Calendar for perhaps a very long time; in 1960, October 25 was already occupied, and in today's calendar that is a feria. So, it is clear she has not had a universal liturgical veneration. Of course, being a New Testament figure, her cultus benefits from being a tradition of time immemorial and so the Church may consider it unnecessary to inscribe her name in the Martyrologium (unlike OT figures such as Daniel and Elijah who are listed.) It is true that the cults of saints are not always uniformly treated, and so this irregularity does not surprise me.

I could not find Tabitha/Dorcas listed in the Catholic encyclopedia, but I am sure there are some offline commentaries and hagiographies that give plenty of background information. Elizium23 (talk) 04:36, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

Capitalization of Notes Column
