There seems to be some battle over how the subject's name should be mentioned in the first sentence. The relevant guidelines are MOS:FULLNAME, which says While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name, if known, should usually be given in the lead sentence (including middle names, if known, or middle initials), and MOS:HYPOCORISM, which says If a person has a common English-language hypocorism (diminutive or abbreviation) used in lieu of a given name, it is not presented between quotation marks or parentheses within or after their name.
As such, it should be James Obergefell in that opening sentence.
