Differences between Ev Psyche and Dev Ev Psyche[edit]

I'm not sure I can perceive a difference between EP and EDP (the disciplines not the articles). Islandsage 18:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, one major difference is that evolutionary psychology tends to focus on adult behaviors and perhaps the behavior of children in certain contexts, such as parent-offspring conflict. EDP focuses on the process of human ontogeny and how it is interrelated with evolutionary theory. I tend to think that EDP is more sophisticated than EP, though I suppose it has to be since it's incorporating development. So EDP has an extra dimension to it that you don't see in EP. I'll bet that within a few years, EP will be very heavily influenced by EDP. I guess another way of looking at it is by asking what's the difference between mainstream psychology and mainstream developmental psychology? EPM 20:27, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem sentences in this article.[edit]

The following sentences in the article are identified as problematic:

  • It assumes that not only are behaviors and cognitions that characterize adults the product of natural selection pressures operating over the course of evolution, but so also are characteristics of children's behaviors and minds. - further explanation needed
  • It further proposes that an evolutionary account would provide some insight into not only predictable stages of ontogeny, but into specific differences between individuals as well. - vague
  • Such a perspective suggests that there are multiple alternative strategies to recurring problems that human children would have faced throughout our evolutionary past and that individual differences in developmental patterns aren’t necessarily idiosyncratic reactions, but are predictable, adaptive responses to environmental pressures. - clarification needed
  • They argue that a greater understanding of the “whys” of human development will help us acquire a better understanding of the “hows” and “whats” of human development. - clarification needed
