Physique is underemphasized

Back in the 50s and 60s nobody called them beefcake magazine. Beefcake is a heterosexual term in its origin. The gays had physique magazines. This article almost ignores them. deisenbe (talk) 22:37, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Based on the sources (especially the most high-quality scholarly sources) it does seem like the term physique magazine is much more commonly used than beefcake magazine. I'm inclined to boldly move this page to Physique magazine unless anyone objects. Colin M (talk) 21:28, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

I've boldly made the move. But happy to revert it if anyone thinks it deserves further discussion. Before moving I also checked Google Scholar and found ~600 results for "physique magazines" and ~100 for "beefcake magazines". Colin M (talk) 19:58, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Redirected from Physique Pictorial?

Hello, does anyone know why this page comes up when you search for 'Physique Pictorial'? Obviously, Physique Pictorial is a Beefcake magazine but is there a reason for the redirect and no Physique Pictorial stand-alone page? The redirect at Physique Pictorial was created as a placeholder, recognizing that an article could be written about the subject. It easily meets Wikipedia's notability standards. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 14:03, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

TODOs

These are mostly for my own reference, but additions/suggestions are welcome.

• One or more gallery sections (probably as subsection at end of "Content" section). cf. commons:Category:Beefcake magazines
• Structured list of notable physique photographers, artists, and studios. (Possibly to be split into a separate list article eventually)
• Try to find more sources about physique magazines outside the US (or commentary from sources about whether this was mainly a US phenomenon). (Cooper is a decent source for UK stuff.)
• Significantly expand "legal challenges" section to talk about major court battles, describe persecution of magazine consumers (e.g. Newton Arvin).
• Create Category:Physique magazines (and possibly a parent category like Category:Physique photography?)
• Update legacy section (currently mostly unsourced). Nealon pp 136-138 has some good stuff about later artistic/scholarly appreciation of physique magazines from 90s onward.
  • Update: removed the content about 80s/90s revival in Special:Diff/1039107736, as unsourced. Colin M (talk) 18:47, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
