This article should mention of the objection of some Senegalese Muslims to the statue. This has been in the news so it shouldn't be hard to find references. ike9898 (talk) 16:43, 6 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The objections in Senegal to the sculpture are a bit more complex than some Muslims not liking it. The scanty dress of the figures goes against the local culture, the style of the sculpture is regarded as sub-stalinist, Senegalese artists have complained that there was no reason to commission Koreans to create the sculpture, when Senegal has its own world-class sculptors. Also, it has been pointed out that the torsos of the figures are not representative of typical African body-shapes, let alone Senegalese.

References for all these points are not easy to find, as they appeared mainly in the local press and media, in French, Wolof, Mandinka etc. Some of these points covered here. Centrepull (talk) 14:53, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I tried tidying the article up and avoiding repetitions. Wizzy 16:11, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Overall need of more content[edit]

After some editing, (if it gets approved) the article will have an extra picture which is a close up of the top of the statue, showing the glass windows of the panoramic room in the head of the center statue. It will also include additional information, such as details on the gender controversy the monument generated, the financial controversy and the artistic controversy. The bulk of the information added will be relevant to the different controversies the building of the statue generated.

I hope to add much more information, specifically from an academic source written by a graduate of the SIT Graduate Institute, Justin Wayne Ritter[1]. His analysis is thorough and of high quality. The wikipedia article is fairly empty, which should be rectified as the monument strives to become a major cultural hotspot, not just in Senegal but all of Africa. In total 5 sources should be added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Struggletrouble (talkcontribs) 18:42, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Name of the Romanian architect, Virgil Magherușan[edit]

Disclaimer: I am Romanian.

The Paris-based architect of Romanian origin is Virgil Magherușan, as pointed out by numerous sources. Can we insert it?

"The 49-meter-tall African Renaissance monument outside Dakar, Senegal, is the largest statue in Africa. Built to commemorate Senegal’s independence from France, it was designed by French-based artist Virgil Magherusan, then built by Mansudae without his permission." http://www.colorsmagazine.com/stories/magazine/87/story/all-official-portraiture-of-north-koreas-reigning-kim-family-is-made-by-man

Where does the "the statue was designed by the Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby" fit in... if Goudiaby's an architect rather than a sculptor, I suspect he designed the landscaping, associated buildings, stairs, and whatnot rather than the sculpture itself,,, --Herostratus (talk) 04:02, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
