Renzo Vitale is an Italian pianist, sound designer, acoustic engineer, composer, and artist.[1][2][3] He is an acoustic engineer and sound designer at the BMW Group, contributing to the sound design for electric mobility in BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce lineups.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Education[edit]

Renzo Vitale holds a Ph.D. in Acoustical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University in Germany, along with two master's degrees in Electronic Engineering and Piano.[3][11][12][13][14] He served as a research scholar at institutions such as the Institute of Technical Acoustics at RWTH Aachen University, Pratt Institute in New York City, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.[11]

Career[edit]

Musical career[edit]

Vitale's musical career spans various genres, including dance theater, performative installations, and virtual reality experiences.[15] His albums include Zerospace (2012), Storm (2013) and Disorders (2019). The album Storm served as the soundtrack for a dance theatre piece inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest.[16][17]

He has contributed to the sound department in projects such as "Docuconcoction of the Delirium Constructions", "Der Weg Das Ziel" (2015), and "At His Side" (2021).[18][19][20]

Contributions to acoustic engineering and sound design[edit]

Vitale advanced the understanding of sound scattering in architectural spaces, influencing auditory perception in concert halls.[21]

Vitale joined BMW Group's Research & Innovation Center in 2015, becoming a specialist in Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) Engineering and Creative Director of BMW Group Sound Design.[22][23][3][11][12][24][25] His "Sound Genetics" approach redefines sonic aesthetics for electric vehicle users, redefining the driving experience.[2][26] Recognized as a Fellow of the German Government's Competency Center for the Cultural and Creative Industries, Vitale contributes sound designs to BMW, Mini as well as Rolls-Royce lineups.[23][2][11]

In 2018, Vitale gave a TED Talk on electric car sound design.[27]

Artistic collaborations and residencies[edit]

In 2014, Vitale collaborated with artist Brian Gonzalez at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, creating a multisensory experience "Tell Me Your Secrets".[28] His collaborations include working with Academy Award-winning film composer Hans Zimmer since 2019, contributing to the sound design for electric mobility at BMW.[23][29][30][31][32][33][4][34][35][36][37][excessive citations]

Renzo Vitale is a Steinway & Sons Artist, featuring his musical creations on the Steinway Spirio.[38]

Projects[edit]

Vitale collaborated with Hans Zimmer on sound design for the 2019 BMW Vision M NEXT and the 2020 BMW Concept i4, contributing to the development of the drive system sound.[29][39][40][5][34][9][41][42][43] The partnership also included BMW's electric vehicles, focusing on creating soundscapes to enhance the emotional connection between drivers and their cars in the IconicSounds Electric initiative.[44][45][22][23][46][47][26][34][41][48]

He shaped the sound profile for the Mini Cooper SE, MINI Vision URBANAUT, and Mini Concept Aceman, combining iconic design with innovative electric technology.[49][40][19][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57]

Vitale collaborated on "Inhabit Sound", a project that combined architectural design and sound to create a sustainable, modular acoustic pavilion for improved urban living.[19][58]

Vision[edit]

Vitale views the car as a "performative sound art installation", highlighting the driver's role as a performer.[15] He envisions allowing drivers to express themselves through pedal and steering wheel control, transforming the driving experience.[45][26][13]

Honors[edit]

In 2008, Renzo Vitale received the Amedeo Giacomini Award for the Best Master's Thesis in Acoustic Engineering from the Italian Society for Acoustics (AIA).[59]

In 2009, he was honored with the Best Master's Thesis Award in Acoustic Engineering by the German Society for Acoustics (DEGA) Study Prize for his Master's thesis in flow acoustics.[60][61]
