12 February 1947–Christian Dior launches the first collection of the House of Dior. The new collection went down in fashion history as the "New Look". The signature shape was characterized by a below-mid-calf length, full-skirt, pointed bust, small waist, and rounded shoulder line (garment from the collection pictured). The collection was a repudiation of the styles of the 1920s and 1930s, and it was also clearly indebted to the styles and body-shapers of the late nineteenth century.

20 July 1943 - the world's first organized fashion week, New York Fashion Week (then called Press Week), is held to showcase the work of American designers.
5 July 1946 – The modern bikini is introduced, modelled by Micheline Bernardini and designed by French engineer Louis Réard, at Piscine Molitor, a public pool in Paris.
1988 - Anna Wintour becomes editor-in-chief of American Vogue, later leading it to become the most successful fashion magazine in the world.

19 August 1883– French designer Coco Chanel is born, who replaced the opulent, over-designed, and constrictive clothes and accessories of 19th-century fashion.
