Mugamoodi is the soundtrack album composed by K for the 2012 Telugu-language superhero film of the same name starring Jiiva and Pooja Hegde in lead roles, directed by Mysskin. The film marks K's second collaboration with Mysskin after Yuddham Sei (2011). The album consists of four songs with seven theme scores. Lyrics were penned by Madhan Karky, and Mysskin himself. The soundtrack album was released by Sa Re Ga Ma on 20 July 2012. The release coincided with a promotional event held at the Sathyam Cinemas, Chennai. The album also was dubbed and released in Telugu as Mask on 12 August 2012, by Aditya Music.

The album received positive reviews from critics, praising K's composition, and lyrics. The tracks "Vaayamoodi Summa Iru Da" and "Maayavi", topped the charts and FM stations.

Production[edit]

K was signed to compose music for the film.[2] The film marks K' second collaboration with Mysskin after Yuddham Sei (2011).[3] K said that he was elated when Mysskin offered him Mugamoodi.[4] Madhan Karky, and Mysskin himself penned the lyrics of the Tamil songs.[5] The Telugu songs were written by Vanamali, Bhuvana Chandra, and Rakendu Mouli.

Mysskin revealed that Kabilan was the first choice to write "Bar Anthem". But he couldn't as he was busy. Karky couldn't write because he hadn't consumed alcohol. So he wrote the lyrics for the song.[6] K called it a Kuthu song with soul.[7] K started working on songs in July 2011.[8] In late July 2011, K recorded a romantic melody, written by Karky. Karky revealed that the song is one of the best song he worked.[9] By early February 2012, K completed recording three songs for the film. K revealed that Mugamoodi will have four songs.[10]

Karky said "usually Mysskin's films have fast numbers, but here, for a change, there are two melodies and I have penned them both. One of the songs was written while I was on a flight. Thankfully, it was a good flight and the moments were romantic. So, I was able to pen good lyrics for that song." The song was his 41st song.[11]

Later, it was reported that the film will not feature a "yellow saree song", unlike Mysskin's previous film, as the film is a superhero film. So the makers shot a mass song at TASMAC bar (later titled "Bar Anthem").[12]

Release[edit]

The tracklist was officially released by the makers on 18 July 2012.[13] The audio launch event was held on 20 July 2012 at Sathyam Cinemas, Chennai.[14] The audio was presented by Vijay and was received by Puneeth Rajkumar.[15][16] Mysskin, Jiiva, Pooja Hegde, Narain, Lingusamy, Venkat Prabhu, Gnanavel Raja, Jayam Raja, Madhan Karky, Ravi K Chandran, and R. B. Choudary were also present at the event.[17] CDs were made available in stores on the same day.[18]

On 12 August 2012, the audio launch of film film's Telugu version titled Mask was held. The event was held at Annapurna Studios, Hyderabad.[19] Along with film's cast and crew, VV Vinayak, Gemini Kiran, Shyam Prasad Reddy, Ramesh Puppala, K. Atchi Reddy, Sunil, B. V. S. N. Prasad, R. B. Reviewing the soundtrack album, Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff rated the album with 3 stars out of 5 and wrote "With his second outing, K proves himself to be a competent musician, effectively rendering emotions into music. Among the songs, Aalaap Raju’s number takes the cake. On the whole, the music has provided a good platform for the superhero to soar."[25] Milliblog wrote "Tepid soundtrack from K."[26]

A critic of Moviecrow wrote "Music Director K's background score is impressive and actually enhances many scenes. That said the BGM in almost all Mysskin's movie barring Nandhalala are identical that you wonder whether it is the man himself who has done the background score! The 'Vaaya Moodi Summa Iru da' song is an aural and visual treat."[27]

NDTV stated "The music drives the film with an adrenaline rush that will crawl through your body and make you want to cheer for the superhero".[28] News18 wrote "BGM in the climax adds pep to the proceedings, while a bar anthem in the first half is impressive."[29]

Impact[edit]

The songs were trending on all FM stations and internet.[30] The tracks "Vaayamoodi Summa Iru Da" and "Maayavi" received acclaim post the audio release.[31] "Vaaya Moodi Summa Iru Da" became a rage among youngsters.[32] "Vaayamoodi Summa Iru Da" trended on many charts.[33] In 2020, Zoom commented "Vaaya Moodi Summa Iru da became a chartbuster and is still the favourite for many listeners."[34] "Bar Anthem" became rage at Tamil Nadu.[35] The album was one of the best album of 2012.[36]

Moviecrow felt "K and Karky's "Vaaya Moodi Summa Iruda" topping the charts has significantly helped the pre-release hype and buzz."[37] The Times of India commented "K was praised for his background score in Mysskin's Yuddham Sei, does not disappoint in this film either. The background score is gripping and blends well with the movie. Among songs, 'Vaaya Moodi Summa Iru Da' is already a rage among youngsters and the song has been picturized aesthetically."[38]
