Ammar Ali Jan (Urdu: عمار علی جان, born December 15, 1986) is a Pakistani historian, activist, and politician. He is a self proclaimed Marxist, founder and president of Haqooq-e-Khalq Party, also a member of Progressive International.[2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Jan completed his education at the Salamat International Campus for Advanced Studies in 2005, received his Masters in social sciences from the University of Chicago in 2011, and got his doctorate ("A study of Communist Thought in Colonial India, 1919-1951") in history from the University of Cambridge in 2018.[4][5]

Career[edit]

Jan has taught as assistant professor of history in University of the Punjab,[6] Government College University and Forman Christian College, Lahore.[7]

Political career[edit]

In 2010, Jan got arrested for leading a demonstration against the power cuts and demanding a new transformer on urgent basis for provision of electricity to whole area.[8] Jan is a believer in revolutionary politics.[9] Hewas fired from the University of the Punjab in April 2018 for his political views and actions on campus.[10] In 2018, Jan was barred from speaking at the 4th Faiz International Festival along with three other speakers including Taimur Rahman (LUMS professor), Ali Wazir (MNA), and Rashed Rahman (a former Daily Times editor).[11] In Feb, 2019 an FIR against Jan was registered for his participation in a protest against the killing of teacher and poet Arman Loni.[12][13][14]

Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement

As member of the People’s Solidarity Forum[who?], Jan launched Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement (HKM) on May 19, 2018 in Lahore to open up new possibilities for social and political imagination. He is president of HKM.[15]

In March 2022, HKM announced that it would register as a political party and contest the local and national elections.[16]

Evaded arrest

In 2020, police tried to arrest Jan for organizing the students solidarity march.[17][18]
