INDIC Scripts

I have noticed that you have been inserting INDIC scripts in some articles. please refer WP:INDICSCRIPTS before you make such edits. Happy editing! regards, DRAGON BOOSTER ★ 18:46, 8 August 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Adhering to policy and guidelines of Wikiproject India that an article should not contain any regional or Indic language script. Refer to the link that was provided in the above statement. regards, DRAGON BOOSTER ★ 19:00, 8 August 2014 (UTC).[reply]

With this edit, what latest guidelines laid down by Wikimedia India foundation are you referring to? What about WP:INDICSCRIPT? -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 12:59, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ugog Nizdast!
I am going to quote a part of the exact discussion that was made with regard to the following: Native languages in lead
There is ultimately no consensus about which language to use, but I see a fair bit of support in regards to IPA and pronunciation and would think this would help normal readers, so I am going to say that 'Using IPA to clarify pronunciation' is the consensus of this discussion... by one DeltaQuad on 26th of January 2012. In Wikipedia usage of native(in this case Indic) scripts was and can clearly never be made unofficial. Just open any of the thousand personality or area based articles related to the Indian subcontinent and you'll understand the point I am trying to make. As proved by Example; this also seems to hold true for Chinese and Korean related articles. Also, to my knowledge shortened template codes (such as this one: Template:Lang-bn) for various languages are also- among others- meant to serve this purpose. Kindly refer this and this. I believe and hope that I made the edit in good faith and in good spirit and in accordance with the way Wikipedia works.
Thank You! -- āĻŽā§ŒāĻ°ā§āĻ¯ā§āĻ¯ āĻŦāĻŋāĻļā§āĻŦāĻžāĻ¸â€‹ (TaLk ShOw! - Contributions) 14:06, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I believe you're mistaken. If you're arguing that there are n number of articles having the script means that consensus was never reached, see OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Or I don't see how quoting one participant from the above discussion can lead us to conclude the consensus. The conclusion is there for all of us to see at WP:INDICSCRIPTS, "There is community consensus that the lead sentence of an article should not contain any regional or Indic language script. It is suggested that IPA be used for help with pronunciation. For details, refer to this RfC: Native languages in lead. The closure of the RfC was clarified here and here. Exceptions are articles on the script itself, or on a language that uses the script.".
Why only recently there was a proposal to revise it which failed, see Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics/Archive 60#Proposed Revision to WP:INDICSCRIPT language. If you still disagree, why don't we take this to the Noticeboard? -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 16:50, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

West Bengal[edit]

If you have time, please work on West Bengal Wikiproject issues at THIS PAGE.--Vin09 (talk) 11:57, 19 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Many sources are present which say it is celebrated by bihari people, this source clearly says most of Bihar is out on road in Durga Puja. I don't think most of Bihar population is Bengali, so Biharis do celebrate Durga Puja. Some more refs TOI, TOI 2. If you want more refs, please use Google. Pratyush (talk) 12:28, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I opened and browsed through your stated citations. Well, Durga Pujo and the predominantly Aryan North-Indian Dushhera are two different kinds of the recently concluded festival. I hope people do realize that. Durga Pujo is a predominantly Bengali festival. One another issue on which I'd require your help is that some random IP address from the State of Odisha is continuously vandalizing the article in subject by adding Odia script which is totally ridiculous. It's just as ludicrous as say a Bengali or a Bihari (for that matter) claiming Rath Yatra to be a native Bengali/Bihari festival and then adding Bengali/Devnagiri. I intend to request for an IP block. -- Mouryan (TaLk ShOw! - Contributions) 18:04, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To say it is predominantly a bengali festival is not right in my opinion. Various sources are present which indicate it is among the most widely celebrated festival in all the states of East India. It is indeed the largest festival of West Bengal and Bengalis definitely are more enthusiastic about it compared to others, no doubt on that. But to say it is mostly a bengali festival doesn't sound right. As of the IP block request, you have my support. He is indeed vandalising the article. Just make sure to add a link to the discussion on this page or my Talk page when you make a block request. Pratyush (talk) 06:28, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of West Bengal Forest Department[edit]

Hello Mouryan,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged West Bengal Forest Department for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

File permission problem with File:Jr NTR at the Audio Release of Kick 2.jpeg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Jr NTR at the Audio Release of Kick 2.jpeg, which you've attributed to http://www.gulte.com/movienews/38523/Kick-2-Audio-Release-Photos. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –FlyingAce✈hello 18:28, 15 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Indic script - again[edit]

Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did at Mumbai, you may be blocked from editing.
You were warned about WP:NOINDICSCRIPT on 8 August 2014 and 4 September 2015. yet you have today gone around vandalizing multiple articles, by adding Indic script and deleting the note that it should not be added. Please do not continue your vandalism - Arjayay (talk) 17:48, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjayay: Hello, how/where do I start another round of discussion about having native scripts in the Infobox? Thanks. -- Mouryan (talk) 08:10, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The answer to your question is that you would need to start a Wikipedia:Requests for comment at Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics
However, I suggest that you read the last discussion here first.
That discussion was closed very quickly as WP:SNOW, as it didn't stand a chance, and I can't imagine much has changed since. - Arjayay (talk) 08:42, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for replying. Do you have an answer to these valid points:
  1. In the various discussions that have happened regarding the Indic Scripts in Infobox or in the Lead, giving examples of articles for which the choice of Indian languages is contentious (I understand there mey be many such articles) does not lead logically to the conclusion that we should ban all Indian language names across the board. There are many cases, like for example the small Tamil city of Salem, for which the appearance of Tamil script in the infobox and the lead was completely uncontroversial and uncontested. Do you think that such an article should be rid of its relevant, official, non-contentious, and very-much used Tamil local name? Ban Indic scripts whenever the choice is actually controversial or contentious but removing them from an article like Salem, Tamil Nadu for no good reason simply on analogy that many India-related articles seemed contentious really looks un-encyclopedic and runs afoul of other guidelines we have here.
  2. Articles such as Silan Kadirgamar still exist that has the name written in the native script.
  3. A complete ban on Indic scripts is ridiculous. Users in the past have stated that they find Indic script to be quite useful in a reference work, especially when it can be clipped from WP and pasted in a search engine:
  • The name of a language in that language and its predominant or official script
  • The name of a script in itself
  • The name of a people in their language
  • The name of a person in their native language
  • The name of an author in the script they use for writing (that is, their name as it appears in the books they write)
  • The name of a book in the script it uses (that is, the title that will actually get hits in a search engine)
  • The name of a song in the language of the song (looking it up in English or transliteration won't get you many hits)

A blanket ban on using Indic scripts in the Infobox because certain users abuse them is like protecting all articles because vandals might abuse editing them. We should not start deleting useful information from an encyclopedia.

Lastly, as I had stated in my edit summaries (all of which you've undid) that the edits were made in line with all major cities in Asia and elsewhere, with a First language that is other than English. Examples are the articles about Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul, Moscow, Guangzhou, Islamabad etcetera.

And by the way, through the multiple discussions that have taken place over the years regarding this, I believe a solid consensus was never reached. The WP:NOINDICSCRIPT for sure doesn't appear to be foolproof. So, I'm certain that me adding Native script (it's just a matter of fact that the native script happens to be an Indic script for Indian subjects) doesn't qualify to me being called a Vandal. Thank you very much. -- Mouryan (talk) 08:47, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, I am not getting into a discussion about it here, I have explained where you should raise this. I personally believe that WP:NOINDICSCRIPT is correct, and unless some new, very convincing, points are made, I will oppose any move to remove or dilute it, as I remember the language-warring that used to take place. However, my personal opinion did not stop me explaining to you where to raise this.
As for Silan Kadirgamar, he was Sri-Lankan, not Indian, so the rule does not apply. However, there are some contraventions of the rule that have not been picked up, especially as some language-warring editors go around adding their own languages, en-masse. I delete them whenever I come across them. - Arjayay (talk) 11:23, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translation[edit]

Hi! I'm a user from Ukrainian wiki and now I want to create articles about districts of Telangana state, but I found a few of sources and I can't translate them. Can you help me? You are the only one user in enwiki, who is active and know telugu. First and second. Tell me please what information is on this pictures and translate only 2 rows of the table. Thank you!--Dimon2712 (talk) 20:44, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, apologies for the late reply. Yes sure, I'd love to help you out. I have provided the transaltion for the first source here, however the Second one is a bit difficult for me to translate. Can you suggest any alternative. For eg.: any platform where I can read aloud the English translation for all the information provided?

Also, just out of curiosity, how did you know to find me, of all the people on this Wiki who speak the language? :) -- Mouryan (talk) 15:42, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! You can send me an email with translation of second source (in mp3 format or another, it doesn't matter). My English is well enough to understand you and if I won't understand you, Google Translate will a little bit help me. But Google can't translate telugu well. If I understood correctly, you will send me an English translation or read text aloud in Telugu? I found you by my bot that checked activity of all users in category Category:User te. A tag has been placed on Goldmedal Electricals, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Mouryan. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:35, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jimfbleak: Hi, I appreciate you reminding me that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted on Wikipedia, however I'm inquisitive and also find it a bit funny as to why you chose to give me this piece of information. I believe the deletion of the article about Goldmedal Electricals which you've done citing G11 was done in Good faith but let it be said on record that neither am I an employee/on the payroll of the company in question nor have I created the article in exchange for anything. The article was encyclopaedic to the best of my understanding and even if any part of it seemed advertorial in any way, it should've been suitably modified or removed.

Thank you. -- Mouryan (talk) 13:21, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

More[edit]

You should be aware that most promos are written by employees or other paid editors, so it's not unreasonable to post a COI reminder. I'm happy to accept your assurance. However, the article was unsuitable anyway.

  • Much of the text is unsourced, not acceptable for a company page.
  • Starting the article with one of the leading' home-grown fast moving [sic] electrical goods company in India. Established in 1979, the company offers a wide range looks pretty spammy.
  • The primary criteria of the notability guidelines have five components that must be evaluated separately and independently to determine if it is met:
  1. significant coverage in
  2. independent,
  3. multiple,
  4. reliable,
  5. secondary sources.
Note that an individual source must meet all four criteria to be counted towards notability. Sources that are not acceptable as independent verifiable references include those linked to the subject organisation company, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, blogs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what the company organisation he claims or interviewing him its management. Most of your refs are PR releases and/or are quoting the company bosses
  • Why do we need a product list? And using company sources means we get company-talk like The company also has launched many experience centres across India for its customers to experience the product lines. These centres offer a complete overview of the wide range of products and their functions to customers, dealers and retailers., just irrelevant promo

Replaceable fair use File:H. K. Dwivedi.webp[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:H. K. Dwivedi.webp. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 18:26, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
