Marilyn Manson[edit]

The cover of "like a virgin" is most likely not MM. there is no record of it actually being released or recorded by him (to my knowladge). it remains to be proven either way though.

aw, man. thanks for the info. though now I got to figure out who did it...

E.F. Calthrop[edit]

Hi,

I noticed a recent edit on The Art of War article regarding British officer, E.F. Calthrop. As something of an afficionado on the topic, I have been unable to find much information at all on E.F. Calthrop, despite my best efforts. I have worked on articles for other Victorian-era sinologists, namely Frederic H. Balfour, Herbert Giles, and Lionel Giles.

Were you planning on creating a biography stub for E.F. Calthrop? If so, would you mind sharing the name of your reference material with me? I am working on the introduction for a new volume of Sun Tzu's work in print, and I would love to spend some time reading about E.F. Calthrop.

If this was not your intent, we should probably removed the wikilink for E.F. Calthrop, because I suspect there is not enough information available. Thanks for your time.

Shawn

revert[edit]

If you can provide a source, I will happily revert myself Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:54, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but are you seriously asking me to cite a source on something that any Chinese child could have told you? I mean, some things are just in Chinese cultural lore. Um, there are the many jiang shi films in the 80s and there's 僵屍與吸血鬼. But unless you read Chinese, I don't see what good that link would do. --little Alex (talk) 18:30, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia can be frustrating, there is material I have been unable to source but know is true and have been thus unable to place in a Featured Article. Seriously, if the book spells out they are more like zombies than vampires or something along those lines please revert me and use the book as a ref. Use the 'cite book' format above (rightmost little box above the editing screen. You don't sound rude, and I am sure it is alot more obvious to you. I am happy when we can cite non-english sources to revert anglophone bias. Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:09, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In your note to me, you claim I'm changing the plot so that it ends up being incorrect.

The sentence, as I originally wrote it, read "Following his father's death, Arthur Clennam returns from China, bearing a pocket watch the dying man urged his son to deliver to Mrs. Clennam."

Your most recent version states, "Arthur Clennam returns from China with his father's pocket watch and delivers it to Mrs. Clennam, as Mr. Clennam's dying wish was for the watch to go to Arthur's mother."

I'm perplexed. How, exactly, does this differ in meaning from the version I originally wrote??? LiteraryMaven (talkcontrib) 12:37, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • But Mr. Clennam didn't urge Arthur to deliver the watch to Mrs. Clennam; he told Arthur to give it to Arthur's mother, who isn't Mrs. Clennam. My sentence actually describes what happened without ever stating outright that Mrs. Clennam is Arthur's mother. I know this makes the sentence more complicated, but since Arthur's true maternity is a plot twist later on, I just thought we should be extra careful in how we word it.--little Alex (talk) 14:36, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Lee Harding (character), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lee Harding (character). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

  • Actually, I wasn't the person who really created that page, 96.31.65.82 was. He/she just completely replaced the old information (i.e., about the singer) with information about the character. I was going to just revert the whole thing, but since the new information looks complete enough for a wikipedia page, I created a new page for it so that the person's efforts won't be wasted.--little Alex (talk) 05:31, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article Dance on My Grave has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of how this might meet notability guidelines. Lacks citations to significant coverage in reliable sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. RadioFan (talk) 17:12, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)[edit]

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:25, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Portillo[edit]

Hi Litalex! You have twice edited the article Michael Portillo to inappropriately highlight his early sexuality in the context of his marriage. Portillo's sexual history is dealt with where it is relevant in the article, in accordance with the standards of WP:BLP. To seek to reiterate this elsewhere in the article is WP:UNDUE and distorts the article's neutrality. Furthermore, to accuse any editor (myself or another) of 'straightwashing' because s/he seeks to maintain WP standards transgresses WP:AGF. If you have problems with any edits in this (or any other) article, please raise them on the talk page. Best, --Smerus (talk) 15:08, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your response. The sense of WP:BLP is that aspects should be mentioned in a context where they are relevant to the 'encyclopaedic' issues they relate to. Thus to mention a politician's sexuality in the context of his or her marriage, where there is no evidence that that sexuality had any impact or relevance to the marriage, would be WP:UNDUE (see here - "biographies should be pared back to a version that is completely sourced, neutral, and on-topic" (my emphasis); to mention it in the context of their political career, where there is evidence that it did have some impact, is y the same token appropriate. In the case we are discussing, the issue is mentioned and referenced in the section dealing with that part of his political career which it affected. Best, --Smerus (talk) 10:10, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid you haven't taken my point. There is no evidence that the subject's past sex life has affected his marriage in any way, or that he has been involved in any extramarital sexual activities, either heterosexual or homosexual. That is why the topic should not be raised in the article in the context of his marriage. To suggest or hint otherwise is not only against WP standards, but is in fact potentially libellous. It is for such reasons that WP editors must be exceptionally scrupulous. I don't intend to extend this discussion further unless there is any further manifestation of it in the article. Best, --Smerus (talk) 14:24, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I believe your subsequent edit to be unacceptable and I am referring this matter to an administrator.--Smerus (talk) 15:39, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have now referred the issue to the BLP noticeboard here.--Smerus (talk) 16:08, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Translation help[edit]

The "Mazu Cultural Palace" in Songjiang's Fangta Park, where you can get free soy milk and youtiao if you show up at the right times.

Since you were kind/foolish enough to have your name on this list, here's a note that I could use some help with the mess of Mazu temples in Shanghai. There were three; the first two were destroyed; the third got moved to Songjiang and rebuilt; and then as of 2014 Zhabei was considering rebuilding their old one. So:

If you have time and interest for any, some, or all of that, great and please leave a note here saying so. I'm asking all the listed Chinese translators for help, so we wouldn't want anyone needlessly duplicating work. — LlywelynII 02:42, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help verify translations of articles from Chinese[edit]

Hello Litalex,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Chinese to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Chinese article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Chinese , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Chinese. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Chinese article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)

If you can help, please let me know. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 22:00, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The line about rhymes isn't special syllables, but 押韻. The line about honoring the old ones is missing. The lines about werewolves are missing. The line about winds from the west is wrong. Apart from the elder, the rest of what the different kinds of wood is missing. Here you go: Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust. Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.

For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out. To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme. Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much. Honor the Old Ones in deed and name, let love and light be our guides again. Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune. Widdershins go when the moon doth wane, and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane. When the Lady's moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two. When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart's desire seek. Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail. When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast. When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth. When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest. Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow. Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows. Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God's insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower. Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland. Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye. Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning. White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility. Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine. Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen. Elder is the Lady's tree burn it not or cursed you'll be. Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark. As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it's now Samhain. When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows. When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn. As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magick rite. Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all. When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules. In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way. When the Sun has reached it's height time for Oak and Holly to fight. Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall. Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you'll be. Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you'll know. When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed. With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend. Chinese Wikipedia Improvements[edit]

Hello Litalex, I'm working on publishing Bottega Veneta from English into Chinese and was wondering if you have time to help me out. I found your username on Wikiproject Translators and saw that you're fluent in English and Chinese. I have a paid COI regarding Bottega Veneta, but my main concern here is ensuring that the information available in English is available and up to date in Chinese. I have a translated version of the article on [1]. Would you mind reviewing it for accuracy as well as its compliance with Wikipedia guidelines? Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks!-- Chefmikesf (talk) 18:19, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Due to my COI, lack of knowledge of the language, and my commitment to follow the Wikipedia guidelines I am not able to move forward.
