Da-own the road a piece driving Hke the mis-chief/ responded the rustic pointing back withhis whip, but youre wrong bout ther bein onlytwo of them; that no-good beach-comber, HankHandcraft, was in ther rig with them. With a shouted word of thanks the car dashedforward once more. It was evident that, realiz-ing that their game was up. Jack and Bill hadpicked up Hank, and, with a sense of loyalty forwhich Rob certainly would not have given themcredit, were trying to save him too. Where can they be headed for? wonderedMr. Blake as the car dashed forward. I can hazard a guess, exclaimed CommodoreWingate, for the Sunnyside railroad station.If they make a train they may escape us yet. Je-rus-a-lem, exclaimed the chief of police, aman named Applegate, pulling out a huge old-fashioned silver watch, theres a train due in afew minutes now; if we dont make it, theyll slipthrough our fingers!

The road took a long curve at this point andwhile they could see the station the pursuers hadthe mortification of knowing that it would besome minutes before they could reach it. As thecar bounded forward, swaying like a rockingship over the rough roads, there came a suddensound that made Robs heart bound. The long whistle of an approaching train. Faster the machine shot onward roaring likea battery of machine guns going into action. Itsoccupants leaned forward with eyes glued on thegroup on the platform.
