Dust storm over Pakistan.

Credit: Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC

Across a wide portion of southwestern Asia, winds were whipping across deserts, sending a froth of dust into the skies on April 7, 2005. The wind raised particularly thick streamers of dust from the surfaces of the Margo Desert in southern Afghanistan, top center, and the Thar Desert, which straddles the border between Pakistan and India, right. The dense dust from these two sources combines over the Arabian Sea, where streamers of dust flowing from the northeast form a checkerboard with dust from the north-northwest. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the dust storm on April 7, 2005.
