Summary

Description
English: Built in 1853, this was originally an Italianate-style house, later modified in the Colonial Revival style during the early 20th Century, and was constructed by William I. Moore for the Welsh family, and was owned by George Winston Welsh Sr., a department store owner and Centre College Trustee, until his death in 1889, and later was inherited by his son, George Winston Welsh Jr., whom also ran the same department store and served as a trustee of the college until his death in 1924. The house features a red brick exterior, a low-slope hipped roof with bracketed eaves, six-over-six double-hung windows, a rough-hewn stone base, one-story and two-story bay windows, a one-story porch on the west facade that features decorative brackets and a low-slope hipped roof, decorative chimney stacks, and a modified front facade, carried out by George Winston Welsh, Jr. in the early 20th Century, with a two-level doric portico featuring massive columns, a classical cornice, decorative rooftop balustrade, metal railings, and door surrounds featuring decorative classical trim, sidelights, and fanlight transoms. In 1937, Centre College purchased the house from the daughter of George Winston Welsh Jr., whom had inherited the house, with money donated to the college by Henry Craik, whom died in 1936, leaving his estate to the college. Centre College renovated the house to serve as the residence of the college’s president, replacing the historic Hillcrest House. The house was dedicated by the college to the memory of Henry Craik, and was further renovated in 1958 and 1982. The house is a contributing structure in the Maple Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
