Description
Nederlands: Kabinetfoto. Toen de Portugezen zich in Zuidoost-Azië gevestigd hadden met de verovering van Malakka (1511), dreven zij handel met Ternate. Toen in 1521 hun concurrenten, de Spanjaarden, zich ook in de Molukken vertoonden, bouwden zij met toestemming van de Sultan een fort op Ternate. Samen bestreden Ternate en de Portugezen met succes de Spanjaarden, die zich met de concurrenten van Ternate (Tidore, Djailolo, Batjan) verbonden hadden. Daarmee raakten deze sultanaten grotendeels op de achtergrond. De sultansfamilies bleven soms nog tot in de 20e eeuw aan de macht, zij het onder de suzereiniteit van de VOC en later het koloniaal bestuur. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
